Download or read book Men of West Virginia Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Biographical Publishing Company and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of West Virginia, Vol. 1 Having brought to a successful termination the task of compiling and editing the sketches contained in these two volumes of the Men of West Virginia, we desire, in presenting the work to our patrons, to make a few remarks, necessarily brief, in regard to the value and importance of biographical works of this nature. We agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson that Biography is the only true History, and also are of the opinion that a collection of the biographies of the leading men of a State or Nation would give a more interesting, as well as authentic, history of their country than any other that could be written. Book Myers History of West Virginia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Myers History of West Virginia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myers' History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2 To The Public: There arc several reasons why this book was written. Firstly - There is no single volume or set of volumes which contains an up-to-date history of West Virginia. Lewis History is the nearest approach. It is a good one. and fairly supplies the purpose for which it was intended, namely: a text book for use in the public schools; but the information it contains is in such abbreviated form and omits so many subjects that are really of such historical importance as to emphasize the need of a book of more extensive detail and covering a wider scope of information for the use of the general reading public. Secondly - There was need of a book which would revive and help perpetuate the memory of some almost forgotten heroes and heroines who opened and made easier the way for the succeeding generations of people. Thirdly - There was need of a record winch would bring forth to the minds of the present and succeeding generations some general idea of the manners and customs of the early settlers and the hardships endured and dangers encountered by them. Fourthly - There was need of a book which should bring to light some unwritten history and a new version of some things already chronicled; and Lastly - The attainment of these objects at a minimum cost to the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2: In Two Parts In thus presenting to the public the present volume the author disclaims any merit for it except that of accuracy. All he dares to assert is that he has brought to the task of its preparation an enthusiastic admiration for his subject - an admiration for the men who first dared the perils of the western wilds, and crossing the Rocky Barrier, reared their cabin homes amid the hills and vales of the solitudes of what is now West Virginia - an admiration for these same men who, during the American Revolution, warred alike against the savage from the wilderness and the Briton from the sea - an admiration for their descendants who in later years laid a firm foundation and reared thereon the perfect and enduring Commonwealth. Throughout the work will be found hundreds of the names and many biographical notices of these men - men from whom have descended a large proportion of the population of the State, now numbering nearly three-quarters of a million. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man on Horseback: A Story of Life Among the West Virginia Hills This little book has not been written with any idea of exploiting my literary attainments, which are really hardly worth mentioning at all. Indeed my only excuse for inflicting this volume upon my friends is a very selfish one. The fact is, I love to write and the prepara tion of this book has helped me to occupy a few spare hours very pleasantly. The story told is one of fact and fiction. Fact, because it tells nothing but truths that have cc curred and are daily occurring all over our land, and which have repeatedly come under my own observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Mark in Virginia, Ideals of American Life, Vol. 1: A Collection of Biographies of the Leading Men in the State Works like the present are liable to three faults - that of giving undue prominence to insignificant names; that of over looking some men of high repute; and lack of wise proportion in selecting adequately from the different fields of human enterprise. It is difficult to avoid such faults; and the editor has no idea that this work is entirely free from them. Conscientious effort has been made, however, to reduce to a minimum these faults. Waitman T. Willey, who represented the restored government of Virginia in the United States Senate, and who was also one of the first U. S. Senators elected by the New State, and through whose agency, chiefly, the New State was born and reared into legal entity, was the last surviving member of the trio. He, also, recently passed away, far advanced in years. Senator Willey had resisted the many importunities of his friends and fellow citizens to write the history of the formation of the New State, because, as the writer frequently heard him say: I do not be lieve I am the man who should write it; I was in it, and my personal bias would be very apt to color any narrative I might write of those events - at least it would lay it open to that sus picion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loyal West Virginia: From 1861 to 1865; With an Introductory Chapter on the Status of Virginia for Thirty Years Prior to the War The best testimony to an act is the testimony of one who saw the act done. Modern criticism, not content with mere tradition, demands a record of facts. The last chapters of the great Civil War arc now being recorded. Those who participated in the struggle, those who saw it, arc fast passing away, and what is now obtainable from eye-witnesses must soon become tradition. From this point of view any facts relating to the war are valuable, and he who helps to preserve them has, in a measure, clone a duty to his fellow man. This work has been written in deference to the Author's convictions that a great neglect exists at this time, and has existed for many years, in relation to the history of the part taken in the late war by the loyal West Virginians, both civil and military, who stood so firmly for the preservation of the Union. It was largely with this incentive to guide him that the following pages were written, though indeed, without a full appreciation of the great labor necessary to gather from authentic sources the facts which have been here collected. By no means the least difficult task has been to digest the large amount of material at hand. Indeed, the work has assumed greater proportions than at first intended, largely due to the incorporation of extracts from official reports for the verification of statements which would otherwise stand entirely upon individual assertion. The Author's personal reminiscences are largely taken from notes kept during his term of over three years' service in the field and, having been made at the time the acts occurred, their accuracy has not been impaired by time. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years on Horseback, or Itinerating in West Virginia It would be difficult to find more striking examples of Christian altruism and heroism any where in this country than the godly men who preached the gospel among the mountains and in the valleys of the Virginias in the early years of our denominational history. These men embodied those elements of character and graces of the Spirit which are essential to success in Christian work anywhere. Having heard the call of God, and hav ing felt the spell Of the divine spirit, they yielded themselves unreservedly to the gospel ministry. They possessed strength of conviction, singleness of aim, earnestness of purpose, and concentration Of effort. As a rule these pioneer preachers had but one business - that of the King. They were so absorbed in the saving of men and women, and in extending the kingdom, that they gave but little attention to present physical comforts and future needs. Many of them were without property, and when they sang, No foot Of land do I possess, NO cottage in this Wilderness.
