Book Men of the Covenant

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of the Covenant, Vol. 1 In the march of years, the heroisms of the past, its agonies and triumphs, fade very quickly into a mist of indistinctness. New events, new debates, and new achievements come crowding in, until their predecessors are well-nigh forgotten. That is why this hook has been written. It seeks to recall a notable period, and to summon from the shadows which begin to gather about them some stalwart and noble figures in whose fellowship it is good to linger. I have addressed myself to ordinary readers, who have not the opportunity or the leisure to consult for themselves the pages of James Kirkton and Robert Wodrow, of Patrick Walker and Alexander Shields, of Dr. Osmund Airy and Dr. Hay Fleming. Where the portrait at full length is unattainable, the miniature or the pencilled sketch may have its place and use. Surely we, in our time, ought to know, and, knowing, to praise famous men, and women not a whit less famous - those men and women who, in Mr. Kiplings phrase, put aside To-day All the joys of their To-day, And with toil of their To-day Bought for Ks To-morrow. Book History of the Old Covenant Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Old Covenant Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Johann Heinrich Kurtz and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Old Covenant, Vol. 1 It is not only with the feelings common and natural in a Translator towards the original, or a writer towards his authorities, that we introduce this volume to the theological readers of Great Britain and America. A repeated perusal of its contents has convinced us that, it is one of the best contributions towards the explanation of the Old Testament with which Germany has enriched our common theological literature. Comprehensive and trustworthy in its information, exhaustive in point of research and learning, fresh and vigorous in thought and style, throughout marked by sobriety and good sense; above all, thoroughly evangelical in its tone, it may safely be recommended as a text-book to the student. Even where we differ from our Author - as on some points, we frankly confess, is the case - his views deserve and require careful examination. In our days and circumstances a thorough and believing investigation into the claims and the teaching of the Word of God is more than ever necessary. Such studies will be materially aided by the fresh light which Dr Kurtz has been able to shed upon an important part of the Bible. It may be proper to add that the translation has been made from the second German edition (1853), and that the notes added by us have been rendered necessary by the progress of Biblical investigation since the date of its appearance. They bear chiefly on the literature of the subject, and have been supplied in view of the minimum necessary, not of the maximum desirable. Yet the Land tempted him. He had been sick; now he seemed better than ever before. Through no fault of his own, he had been outcast, unclean, a pariah. Now he was regarded as a reincarnation of the Land's greatest hero—Berek Halfhand—armed with the mystic power of White Gold. That power alone could protect the Lords of the Land from the ancient evil of the Despiser, Lord Foul. Except that Covenant had no idea how to use that power. . . .

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People of God, Vol. 1 of 2: An Inquiry Into Christian Origins The first of these two volumes deals with the authority of the Old Testament and its religion; the second with the origin of the Church and the ministry. It may, perhaps, be asked why two subjects so distinct from each other are not treated in two separate books. The answer is, because both are included in an account of The first of these two volumes deals with the authority of the Testament and its religion; the second with the origin of the Church and the ministry. It may, perhaps, be asked why two subjects so distinct from each other are not treated in two separate books. The answer is, because both are included in an account of Christian origins as organic parts of a single whole. This will be most readily seen if I state here the central position which links the two extremes together. Jesus, it is agreed by all, freed men from the burden of the Jewish Law. But how, and in what sense? If He freed any one, He freed the Jews of His own day. And they believed they were bound to the Law as to an ordinance supernaturally given by God Himself. Jesus, then, could have freed them only in one or other of two ways. Either, He taught them that the Law had never been supernaturally revealed, and that therefore they need no longer consider themselves to be under any obligation towards it; or else, He shared their belief in the supernatural authority of the Law and delivered men from it by claiming to be endowed by God with a similar supernatural authority to annul the Old and inaugurate a New Covenant. It will be seen in Chapter VIII of this volume that the latter alternative alone is in accordance with the facts of history. Perhaps the strongest objection to ascribing to Jesus a belief in the Law as a supernatural revelation lies in the fact that, at first sight, it seems impossible to harmonize such a belief with the result of modern scientific criticism of the Old Testament. Book Before Harlem

Download or read book Before Harlem written by Ajuan Maria Mance and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite important recovery and authentication efforts during the last twenty-five years, the vast majority of nineteenth-century African American writers and their work remain unknown to today’s readers. Moreover, the most widely used anthologies of black writing have established a canon based largely on current interests and priorities. Seeking to establish a broader perspective, this collection brings together a wealth of autobiographical writings, fiction, poetry, speeches, sermons, essays, and journalism that better portrays the intellectual and cultural debates, social and political struggles, and community publications and institutions that nurtured black writers from the early 1800s to the eve of the Harlem Renaissance. As editor Ajuan Mance notes, previous collections have focused mainly on writing that found a significant audience among white readers. Consequently, authors whose work appeared in African American–owned publications for a primarily black audience—such as Solomon G. Brown, Henrietta Cordelia Ray, and T. Thomas Fortune—have faded from memory. Even figures as celebrated as Frederick Douglass and Paul Laurence Dunbar are today much better known for their “cross-racial” writings than for the larger bodies of work they produced for a mostly African American readership. There has also been a tendency in modern canon making, especially in the genre of autobiography, to stress antebellum writing rather than writings produced after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Similarly, religious writings—despite the centrality of the church in the everyday lives of black readers and the interconnectedness of black spiritual and intellectual life—have not received the emphasis they deserve. Filling those critical gaps with a selection of 143 works by 65 writers, Before Harlem presents as never before an in-depth picture of the literary, aesthetic, and intellectual landscape of nineteenth-century African America and will be a valuable resource for a new generation of readers.

Book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1

Download or read book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1 written by Robert Boyd and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophically Thinking about World Religions is different from other works in the discipline today. It deviates from the typical approaches used for the study of world religions. Its goal is to engage readers in thinking hard about world religions, not about the data surrounding those traditions. By focusing on philosophical questions, each reader should be challenged to do their own investigations that may reveal the heart of these traditions. Another stance that this project takes that distinguishes it from other texts in the discipline is that it advocates an inclusivist perspective regarding the world religions. Pluralism, which is the predominate assumption today, ends either in contradiction or in the development of a metatheory that dismisses crucial distinctions between the various traditions or eliminates some ancient religions because they do not fit the metatheory. By taking an open inclusivist approach, all religious traditions may engage at the table of dialogue. The final essay is about justice and social affairs. While that discussion is couched within the context of a particular tradition, each religious tradition must have the discussion. But it must be more than an intrareligious dialogue; it must become an interreligious dialogue.

Book Securing America s Covenant with God

Download or read book Securing America s Covenant with God written by Miles Huntley Hodges and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a three-part series on America as a Covenant Nation. This volume begins with the period in the early 1600s when two very different English societies were established in the New World, one in Virginia and one in New England. The Virginia society simply re-created the rigidly class-based feudal society of the times. The New England society was a most unusual democracy of social equals, covenanted to live under God’s—not man’s—personal rule. These two American social types would find themselves in rather constant struggle—as Americans found keeping covenant with God to be very difficult because of man’s natural tendency to want to control life, including the lives of others. This volume will take the American narrative through the Christian “Great Awakening,” the War of Independence, the founding of a new American Republic, the early years of social spread across the continent, a “Second Great Awakening,” mounting tensions over the slavery issue, the American Civil War, and finally the period of Reconstruction afterward. This study goes deeply into social, political, and economic dynamics (a study in social power)—but also blends this analysis with an equally deep inquiry into the cultural-spiritual character of American society during these time periods and events.
