Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of the Bible A great many people are afraid of the will of God, and yet I believe that one of the sweetest lessons that we can learn in the school of Christ is the surrender of our wills to God, letting Him plan for us and rule our lives. If I know my own mind, if an angel should come from the throne of God and tell me that I could have my will done the rest of my days on earth, and that everything I wished should be carried out, or that I might refer it back to God, and let God's will be done in me and through me, I think in an instant I would say. Book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Classic Reprint written by James Hastings and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Euth herself to perfection. In the Church of St. Peters at Eone there are three domes. Standing under one of the lesser domes that flank the transept, the spectator obtains a sense of dignity and size; this is increased when he passes under the dome of the transept itself; and it becomes a wonder bordering on ecstasy when at last he stands under the sublime central dome, which appears like the vault of heaven itself. So it might seem as if there were an artistic design to bring out the character of Euth by first engaging our affection and admiration of the lesser figures. For Orpah is a sweet and attractive creature, clinging with daughterly affection to the mother of her husband, and clinging with an even greater affecticyi to the land of her birth; and Naomi, the elder woman, is more beautiful still. Her life and character are sketched in a few masterstrokes, but from them the world has learned to love her. But, after all, she is only a foil to her daughter-in-law, Euth the Moabitess. Euth is the kind of woman that draws the world after her, not by a baleful gift of beauty there is no hint that she was fair to look upon but by the lasting qualities of unselfish devotion, of lowly serviceableness, of maidenly modesty. She is one of the characters that humanity loves to remember. Not only does the preacher turn to her story with enthusiasm, but the poet, when the passion and purity of the nightingale are captivating his heart, thinks instinctively of her, and fancies that the bewitching strain is Perhaps the selfsame song that found a path Through the sad heart of Euth, when sick for home, She stood in tears amid the alien corn. Men love to study the story because it touches them with the mystery and charm of early love; women love to study it because they recognize here the best type of womanhood.4. The story itself is a simple one, made up of the ordinary elements of human life, and the actors in it are ordinary people. But, as it proceeds, the beauty of Euth scharacter is unfolded; and, from the moment of her affectionate determination to accompany Naomi, she becomes the central figure of the tale. From that point right on to the end it is emphatically the Book of Euth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible: Adam Joseph The desire of the Editor Of The Greater Men and Women of the Bible is to make the preaching of the present day accurate and attractive. It must attract the attention and win the heart of hearers, otherwise it makes little or no impression. One of the surest ways of securing attractiveness is a restrained use of illus trations. Touch the imagination and the heart is almost won. The illustrations in this series of books are fresh, being for the most part taken from books that have been published quite recently. And they are carefully chosen so as to make the point clear and telling. But present-day preaching must also be accurate. The Men and Women of the Bible are often chosen as subjects for popular lectures, and sometimes little attention is paid to the truth of the lecture if only it is popular. In these volumes the most author itative books have been consulted and used, so that the statements contained in them may be relied upon With confidence. Criticism is kept subordinate to construction, as it should always be in the pulpit, but the work of the critic is not forgotten any more than that of the discoverer. Download or read book A People of One Book written by Timothy Larsen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Victorians were awash in texts, the Bible was such a pervasive and dominant presence that they may fittingly be thought of as 'a people of one book'. They habitually read the Bible, quoted it, adopted its phraseology as their own, thought in its categories, and viewed their own lives and experiences through a scriptural lens. This astonishingly deep, relentless, and resonant engagement with the Bible was true across the religious spectrum from Catholics to Unitarians and beyond. The scripture-saturated culture of nineteenth-century England is displayed by Timothy Larsen in a series of lively case studies of representative figures ranging from the Quaker prison reformer Elizabeth Fry to the liberal Anglican pioneer of nursing Florence Nightingale to the Baptist preacher C. H. Spurgeon to the Jewish author Grace Aguilar. Even the agnostic man of science T. H. Huxley and the atheist leaders Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant were thoroughly and profoundly preoccupied with the Bible. Serving as a tour of the diversity and variety of nineteenth-century views, Larsen's study presents the distinctive beliefs and practices of all the major Victorian religious and sceptical traditions from Anglo-Catholics to the Salvation Army to Spiritualism, while simultaneously drawing out their common, shared culture as a people of one book.

Download or read book The Plain Man and His Bible Classic Reprint written by Len G. Broughton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Man and His Bible Of course, many of them are good for nothing, but many of them are valuable. I do not agree with the talk that we hear much of in these days that all modern books are cheap in matter as well as price. Many of our modern books will be living when the authors are dead and gone. But the Bible goes steadily on as the greatest and most popular of books. It is greatest because it treats of the greatest theme. Without the Bible we would have no knowledge of the most important matters that concern the soul. The History of Man's Moral Condition It is in the Bible that we get the history of man's moral condition. From the study of science we can get a history of most of the important matters of life, but while we are doing this we are constantly reminded of the fact that nowhere outside the Bible can we get the history of man's moral condition. Nature gives us no help. The earth itself is silent. The stars above us only confuse us. Everything is dumb in answer to the question "What is man?" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Men and the Bible The Obj ect of this book is to review the ever widening and deepening interest in Bible study among thoughtful men, especially among men In educational institutions, with the purpose of showing the conditions, responsibility and opportunity of educated leadership in the pro motion of the study of the Christian Scrip tures. The chapters on Bible study in the Orient were prompted by a world tour which the writer made in 1909, with the View of gain ing first-hand knowledge of Bible study move ments among students and educators in Asia, and of assisting if possible in their develop ment. I wish to express my thanks to the editors of The Century Magazine, who have generously given their permission to the publication in this book of three papers, with certain pictures, which originally appeared in that magazine. I desire also to record my debt and my deep appreciation to my two associates, Neil Mc Millan, J r., and Harrison S. Elliott, for their invaluable assistance in the final preparation of this book for the press. In a large correspondence from various parts of the world, representing men and wom en of almost every nationality and creed, the questions treated in the following pages are continually suggested. The writer is hopeful, therefore, that this book may be the means of assisting persons, both at home and abroad, toward the solution of some of these Bible problems, which are indeed life problems, through a new discovery for themselves of the Book which Goethe called The Book of the Nations. A revelation from God is not a statement of what men once did; it is a statement of what men may always do. T/zere lies the power of the Bible! It is not the revelation of something which was once revealed to a little band of worshippers; it is a revelation of how God always reveals. It is the special announcement of that which is not special - of the universal order of God's word and ways to man. It tells not how He Spoke once, but how He speaks always. It is the proclamation that there is spiritual law in the natural world, and the enumeration of those eternal principles by which that law is enforced and maintained.
