Book THE NEW ZEALANDERS IN SINAI AND PALESTINE Illustrated Edition

Download or read book THE NEW ZEALANDERS IN SINAI AND PALESTINE Illustrated Edition written by Lt Col C. G. Powles and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains over 60 illustrations and 10 maps. “The official account of the NZ Mounted Rifles Brigade (Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington Mounted Rifles), which fought right through the Sinai and Palestine campaigns, gaining a high reputation. ...The Mounted Rifles Brigade had been fighting on Gallipoli as infantry, part of the New Zealand and Australian Division, and on 26th December 1915 they arrived back in Alexandria to resume their mounted role; their strength was 62 officers and 1329 other ranks. When reorganization was complete the Brigade numbered 2421 officers and men and 2,884 horses, part of the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division along with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigades. In March 1916 the Brigade took over part of the Suez Canal Defences but it was in August that the Sinai operations began with the Battle of Romani and the subsequent actions in all of which the Brigade took part. Advancing into Palestine they played a great part in that campaign earning high praise from Allenby. In the appendices there is a Brigade Diary showing the more important moves taken and actions fought during the two campaigns, and they make a most impressive list. As with the other volumes of this history of New Zealand’s part in the Great War the narrative is easy to read and follow, gives a clear picture of the terrain (a virtual travelogue in parts) and the conditions of desert fighting, supported by good maps and plenty of contemporary photos. There is no Roll of Honour nor list of Honours and Awards nor index. Apart from the diary the appendices contain a glossary of terms occurring with place names and the brigade order of battle with succession of commanding officers in all units.”—N&M Print edition.

Book Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand

Download or read book Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand written by Joseph Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand "Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand" should be an appropriate title for a work containing the photos and biographical sketches of representative men, most of whom are deeply interested in racing, hunting, and other sports. To make this book representative, it was necessary to take the leading actors in all departments, but it is not pretended that the list has been exhausted, the field is so large. Connecting links will be found between the old racing world and the new in its pages. There are many who have helped, or are assisting, to make turf history, whom the Editor would have been pleased to add to the collection, but a few, from excessive modesty, declined; others were negligent, and had to be left out, and a few have been omitted unintentionally. To have included all would have been a much heavier undertaking than a busy man could accomplish. The book has, however, run into greater dimensions than was promised at the outset, and contains about 250 illustrations. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting many of the photos, and information. The Editor desires to express his sincere thanks to those who so cordially responded, and others who have promised support, and trusts that any shortcomings may be overlooked. He would add, in conclusion, that he has received every consideration from his publishers, the Brett Printing and Publishing Company, who have done the whole of the mechanical work in connection with the illustrations and the issue of the book. Book Between Byzantine Men

  • Author : Mark Masterson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2022-06-17
  • ISBN : 1351135228
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Between Byzantine Men written by Mark Masterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence and importance of same-sex desire between men in the Byzantine Empire has been understudied. While John Boswell and others tried to open a conversation about desire between Byzantine men decades ago, the field reverted to emphasis on prohibition and an inability to read the evidence of same-sex desire between men in the sources. Between Byzantine Men: Desire, Homosociality, and Brotherhood in the Medieval Empire challenges and transforms this situation by placing at centre stage Byzantine men's desiring relations with one another. This book foregrounds desire between men in and around the imperial court of the 900s. Analysis of Greek sources (many untranslated until now) and of material culture reveals a situation both more liberal than the medieval West and important for its rite of brother-making (adelphopoiesis), which was a precursor to today’s same-sex marriage. This book transforms our understanding of Byzantine elite men's culture and is an important addition to the history of sex and desire between men. Between Byzantine Men will appeal to scholars and general readers who are interested in Byzantine History, Society, and Culture, the History of Masculinity, and the History of Sexuality.
