Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Men of Letters Tne last two monographs here given were prepared for a work on which I have been for a considerable time engaged, and which is soon to be sent to the press, The Literary History of the American Revolution but as the chief activity of the two writers thus dealt with be longs to the period immediately after the Revo lution, I have deemed it best to exclude them from that work. Without question, however, for our literary history during the first thirty or forty years of the independent republic, these two writers are representative men and both for their own sakes, and for their obvious use in the interpretation of American thought and life in that period of national gestation, I have hoped that the monographs devoted to them might have some value even in this de. Book American Men of Letters

Download or read book American Men of Letters written by Edwin Leavitt Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Men of Letters: Their Nature and Nurture The plan of this dissertation was conceived in 1911, as a result of reading the fascinating pages of Professor Lester F. Ward's Applied Sociology. Wards work was based on an inductive study of the nature and nurture of French men of letters, Alfred Odin's Genese des Grands Hommes. Ward had been profoundly impressed by Odin's work. In the Applied Sociology he suggested the desirability of making other inductive studies which should be modeled after Odin's, and applied to many nations and fields of activity. When this study was undertaken, the author believed that the opinions advanced in Wards work were in every way justified by the evidence. Results attained in his own work, however, have convinced him that nurture is not predominant over nature to the extent that Ward supposed. Nevertheless he still agrees that Wards plea for the socialization of opportunity is quite warranted. If this study in any way strengthens the case for the extension of opportunity to any who are at present denied their birthright, he will feel that the work has served its purpose. In conclusion, acknowledgments are due; first, to the many authors and relatives of authors who courteously answered the questionnaire sent to them; second, to teachers in Columbia and colleagues in Hamilton College who reviewed the statistical aspects of the work, and finally, to Dr. Alvan A. Tenney of Columbia University, for his constructive criticism and generous advice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Men of Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Men of Letters Classic Reprint written by Dixon Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Letters A year ago it would have been a pleasure to write something in appreciation of Dixon Scott's work. The more you admire a man's writing the gladder are you that he should receive - for all good writers seem to be modest, and pleased with praise - whatever poor tribute you can offer him. But to review the book of a man at the outset of his career is a very different task from writing an introduction to that book when he is dead. Dixon Scott was born in July, 1881, and died in October of last year. And my sense of our loss is proportionate to my admiration for his work. I feel it to be an immense loss. Many others there are who mourn him as a friend also - as a man of fine and very lovable character, they say. Such a man is indeed easily discernible through out these pages. But it is likely that the reader will wish to know more of him by direct evidence; and I Wish that the sad privilege of writing here about his work had fallen to someone who knew him and could describe him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters The Prosperity which attend Macaulay all through life may be said to have begun with the moment of his birth. Of all good gifts which it is in the power of fortune to bestow, none can surpass the being born of wise, honourable, and tender parents: and this lot fell to him. He came of a good stock, though not of the kind most recognized by Colleges of Arms. Descended from Scotch Presbyterians - ministers many of them - on his father's side, and from a Quaker family on his mother's, he probably united as many guarantees of "good birth," in the moral sense of the words, as could be found in these islands at the beginning of the century. His mother(nee Selina Mills) appears to have been a woman of warm-hearted and affectionate temper, yet clear-headed and firm withal, and with good eye for the influences which go to the formation of character. Book English Men of Letters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters: William Hickling Prescott Throughout the first few decades of the nineteenth century, the United States, though forming a political entity, were in everything but name divided into three separate nations, each one of which was quite unlike the other two. This difference sprang partly from the character of the population in each, partly from divergent tendencies in American colonial develop ment, and partly from conditions which were the result of both these causes. The culture history, therefore, of each of the three sections exhibits, naturally enough, a distinct and definite phase of intellectual activity, which is reflected very clearly in the records of American literature. Book Modern Men of Letters Honestly Criticised Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Men of Letters Honestly Criticised Classic Reprint written by James Hain Friswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Men of Letters Honestly Criticised But there is even a worse mode of treatment with some critics, which is to fall into, or even to commit, blunders and errors, and to attribute them to the more correct author. Those Who have suffered from such a treatment, have learnt the value of such criticism, and the causes which make the ordinary book-notice valueless. As a rule, if an author be good and strong, he will succeed, and the more antagonism he meets with, the better. The only thing valuable in this life is Truth, and although at present we may be overborne with a multiplicity and superabundance of error, although we are quite aware that Truth can effectually be stamped down and hidden for years, still the more ardent and con stant grows our belief in the ultimate triumph of that which is earnest and right. A bad book may have a wide-spread influence and may succeed for a time, but, as a rule, that influence is contemptible and its reign is exceedingly short; goodness and wisdom win the day, they only are permanent and endure.
