Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Achievement: Inventors This book, dealing with our great inventors, their origins, hopes, aims, principles, disappoint ments, trials, and triumphs, their daily life and personal character, presents just enough con cerning their inventions to make the story intelligible. The history is often a painful one. When poor Goodyear, the inventor of vulcan ized rubber, was one day asked what he wanted to make of his boys, he is said to have replied: Make them anything but inventors; mankind has nothing but cuffs and kicks for those who try to do it a service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Invention: Vignettes From the Annals of Industry and Science The history of Invention is much more than a question of mere machinery, or of material progress. The life-stories of the inventors are alive with light and shadow. Struggles with poverty, hopes long deferred, the sudden flow of dramatic incident which precedes discovery, the realisation of a life's dream, the acquisition of fame and riches, form parts of the story just as much as the conquest over the forces of Nature, and the working out of problems. Book The Romance of Industry and Invention Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of Industry and Invention Classic Reprint written by Robert Cochrane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Industry and Invention Our national industries lie at the root of national pro gress. The first Napoleon taunted us with being a nation of shopkeepers; that, however, is now less true than that we are a nation of manufacturers - coal, iron, and steel, and our textile industries, taken along with our enormous carrying-trade, forming the backbone of the wealth of the country. A romantic interest belongs to the rise and progress of most of our industries. Very often this lies in the career of the inventor, who struggled towards the perfection and recognition of his invention against heavy difficulties and discouragements or it may lie in the interesting processes of manufacture. Every fresh labourer in the field adds some link to the chain of progress, and brings it nearer perfection. Some of the small beginnings have increased in a marvellous way. Such are chronicled under Bessemer and Siemens, who have vastly increased the possibilities of the steel industry in the sections devoted to Krupp, of Essen Sir W. G. Armstrong, of the Elswick Works, where men are now employed alone in the arsenal; Maxim, of Maxim Gun fame; the rise and pro gress of the cycle industry; that of the gold and diamond mining industry; and the carrying-trade of the world. Book Men of Achievement Inventors

Download or read book Men of Achievement Inventors written by Philip G. Hubert and published by Digital Scanning Inc. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In “Men of Achievement”, Philip Hubert writes about the famous inventors Benjamin Franklin, Robert Fulton, Eli Whitney, Elias Howe, Samuel Morse, Charles Goodyear, Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell as well as many others. Although it reviews their inventions it also examines the inventor: their origins, hopes, aims, principles, disappointments, trials and triumphs, their daily life and personal character. With over forty-five illustrations, “Men of Achievement” discusses the value of their work – the invention of steam, electricity, the telegraph, telephone, phonograph and the camera and Goodyear’s vulcanized rubber. With the patent laws of the time it also highlights how these men contributed thousands of millions of dollars to the nation’s wealth and received comparatively nothing in return.

Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book American Inventions and Inventors Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Inventions and Inventors Classic Reprint written by William A Mowry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Inventions and Inventors While we watch the steamer glide around Castle Garden into East River, evening begins to come on; we must hasten uptown. As we pass along Broadway, lights flash out in the darkness and our thoughts are again turned to fire and steam. We have heard that the source of the electric light is in the dynamo, and that steam power is used to turn that great machine. The enormous engine, the mammoth boat, the brilliant light - all need the power of steam, and nothing but fire will produce this steam. What, then, is fire? And is its only use that of changing quiet, liquid water into powerful steam? Let us see. Did you notice that machine shop which we passed when we were in Cleveland a few days ago? Did you see those furnaces with the huge volumes of flame bursting out of the open doors? You know that great heat is necessary to make tools and other implements of iron, and all the instruments of everyday life that are formed out of metals. Our pens and needles, our hoes and rakes, our horseshoes, our stoves and furnaces, our registers and the iron of our desks - all de pend upon heat for their production. Fire can do much for us. To change water into steam is but one of its powers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stories of Invention

Download or read book Stories of Invention written by Edward E. Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Invention: Told by Inventors and Their Friends The reader may or may not have seen these books, so much the worse for him if he have not, but that omis sion of his may be easily repaired. There are four of them stories OF war told by Soldiers stories OF the sea told by Sailors; stories OF adventure told by Ad venturers stories OF discovery told by Discoverers. Since the regular meetings began, of which these books are the history, the circle of visitors has changed more or less, as most circles will, in five years. Some of those who met are now in another world. Some of the boys have grown to be so much like men, that they are subw duing the world, as Uncle Fritz would say, in their several places, and that they write home, from other latitudes and longitudes, of the Discoveries and Adventures in which they have themselves been leaders. But younger sisters and brothers take the places of older brothers and sisters. The club -for it really is one is popular, Lady Oliver's house is large, and Uncle Fritz is hospitable. He says himself that there is always room for more; and Ellen Flaherty, or whoever else is the reigning queen in the kitchen, never complains that the demand is too great for her waffles. Book Industrial Biography

Download or read book Industrial Biography written by Samuel Smiles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Biography: Iron Workers and Tool Makers The author offers the following book as a continuation, in a more generally accessible form, of the Series of Memoirs of Industrial Men introduced in his Lives of the Engineers. While preparing that work he frequently came across the tracks of celebrated inventors, mechanics, and iron-workers - the founders, in a great measure, of the modern industry of Britain - whose labours seemed to him well worthy of being traced out and placed on record, and the more so as their lives presented many points of curious and original interest. Having been encouraged to prosecute the subject by offers of assistance from some of the most eminent living mechanical engineers, he is now enabled to present the following further series of memoirs to the public. Without exaggerating the importance of this class of biography, it may at least be averred that it has not yet received its due share of attention.
