A large part, in fact the great majority, of the engrav ings used to illustrate Men of Illinois were made from photographs taken by Radnor Coover, whose studio is in the Schiller building, Randolph street, Chicago. Mr. Coover is without question in the very front of his profession. For his assistance in making this book pictorially excellent the publisher wishes to thank Mr. Coover heartily, and takes this as the best means of so doing. Book The Illinois Red Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Illinois Red Man Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illinois Red Man Editor Illinois Red Man: On Red Man's day at the World's Fair, September 17th, while waiting in my carriage to participate in the great parade in honor of our Order, I was taken violently ill and it became necessary to lose the delights of this glorious day and spend my time in the Emergency Hospital, much to my regret and loss. Since that time I have been exceedingly ill, which will explain why I have been so late in handling in this paper. In this connection I request your readers to take into brotherly consideration the fact that this letter was written from a sick bed, before they notice the lack of detail necessary in a just description of a great convention. The fifty-seventh Great Sun session of the Great Council of the United States will be remembered a session of good nature, short sessions, without contest in the elections and without the slightest jar to mar its proceedings, it being four days of one continual love-feast. A large majority of the members of the Great Council met in St. Louis the Saturday preceding the Great Council session and proceeded to St. Joseph on the Red Men's Missouri Pacific Flyer. The trip was delightful and on the next day we made a stop at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The train was met by Col. Duncan, the commander of the Post, and his officers, and our party was escorted to the beautiful parade grounds, where a guard mount was had, after which a band concert was given by the regimental band. How the lusty throats of our boys did respond to the inspiring strains of "Dixie," and when the "Red, White and Blue" was heard all heads were uncovered to the beautiful music that means so much to the patriotic Red Man. Our stay here was made most pleasant by the officers of the Post, and we were well entertained, but I thoroughly believe that Col. Duncan and his brave officers appreciated this call from a patriotic band of men who love their country, revere its flag and defend its army. The sessions of the Great Council commenced Monday morning and lasted until Thursday afternoon, the shortest session held for years. Hon. T. B. Allen, in welcoming the Great Council to Missouri, said among other things: "I have read somewhere in history that the Red Man got the worst of it. I am glad that history now records that the Red Man gets the best of it - the best of everything that is going. I have heard that the red men were once savage and delighted in killing the palefaces. I am glad that to-day he is the best friend of the paleface. I am told that the red man once let the woman do the work, but now I am glad that the Red Men love and honor women as the noblest work of God. "While the Red Men have improved in some respects, yet they still practice some of their old habits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Recollections of Early Illinois and Her Noted Men

Download or read book Recollections of Early Illinois and Her Noted Men written by Joseph Gillespie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Early Illinois and Her Noted Men: Read Before the Chicago Historical Society, March 16, 1880 While cultivating these narrow strips of land the men would be in close proximity to each other, ready at a moment's notice to assemble for mutual protection or assistance. This arrangement gave the French people, likewise, an opportunity to gratify their strong social tastes and feelings. On the other hand, there is nothing gregarious or social in the disposition of the American pioneer. He takes his family out into the wilds, and squats down wherever he finds water, timber, and game abundant. He builds a cabin, breaks up a few acres of ground, which he puts in corn, keeping in mind all the time that he is as far away from neighbors as is consistent with safety from Indians. He claims the whole country as belonging to him and his class. He has not the slightest conception of the rights of the aboriginal inhabitants. He regards it as his mission to drive them off, or what is preferable, to exterminate them. The minds of these men seem to have been so peculiarly constructed or perverted as to render it impossible for them to comprehend the fact that Indians have rights. They are Me manifest destiny - men par excellence. The time in which they are not occupied in the corn-patch is spent in the deepest forest solitudes, their only companions their dog and gun. Day in and day out, he creeps stealthily through the woods watching for game be it a buck or an Indian, the instant he perceives it his 'unerring ri e lays it dead at his feet. The savages in his front, and the wave of population coming after, equally annoy him. It is said that if your genuine pioneer hears his neighbor's chickens crow, he is off into the more profound depths of the wilderness, and gives up his cabin and his clearing, and goes off muttering his curses against the Indians and the Yankees. Book Early Bench and Bar of Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Bench and Bar of Illinois Classic Reprint written by John Dean Caton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Bench and Bar of Illinois Some years ago when in social conversation with two gentlemen of the Bar, I was relating some professional incidents which had occurred many years before, when one of them suggested that it would be interesting to the profession of the present day if I would note down, events which had occurred in the early times and lay them before the public; I promised to do so, and the result was a series of articles published in the Chicago Legal News. Upon their publication I received many letters from gentlemen of the Bar in various parts of the State, expressing the hope that the articles might be republished in book form. I finally revised these articles and prepared them for the press, with several new papers which have not been previously published, and placed them in the hands of the printer, thinking that many incidents and some peculiarities of former times might be thus perpetuated, which may in still later times be considered worth remembering. I do this the more readily as I am probably the only man now living who can speak from personal observations and recollections of events of fifty years and more ago. In the Appendix I have given an address delivered before the State Bar Association on the 24th of January last, and another given before the Chicago Bar Association February 11, 1893, in which will be found some statements germane to the subject, not previously given.
