Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Maidens and Manners, a Hundred Years Ago Our great-grandfathers stayed at home; the means of locomotion inland were very rude, almost all journeys being made on horseback; and the roads were something awful. There was nothing to tempt anyone to take a sea voyage, for the ships were small, and very high out Of the water, which made them roll fearfully, and of such a build for speed, that a voyage to India took best part Of a year to perform. A few young men Of the upper classes went the grand tour, as it was called, upon the Continent, visiting France, Spain, Italy, and Austria but seldom going out of certain well-defined limits. Our great-grandfathers never were in a hurry - they had no trains to catch; telegraphs and telephones were unknown; there was little speculation, and of the fever of the Stock Exchange they were almost entirely ignorant. Those engaged in trade lived, as a rule, over their place of business; and began work early in the morning, finishing much later than our merchants do. Then long letters were written, for a man had a long day before him, and not too much to do. Merchants did not make the colossal fortunes of modern times, but they plodded on, and amassed a competence after a life's work, which was not too hard; were contented with their lots, and were certainly as happy as we are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners in America, Vol. 1 of 2 Had I been conscious, in what I have written of the United States, of being influenced by any motive incompatible with perfect fairness of purpose, you are perhaps the last person to whose judgement I should venture an appeal. By no one will the arguments I have advanced be more rigidly examined, and the grist of truth more carefully winnowed from the chaff of sophistry and declamation. For this reason, and in testimony of sincere esteem, I now publicly connect your name with the present work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Women Manners in Colonial Times The wild fowl that every autumn came to them in countless millions from Alaska could have told them all; and now we know what the canvas-back and the mallard have always known. But we must be careful not to think ourselves on that account the superiors of the colonists. We have at our command more facts and more mate rial wealth, but it is a question whether we are any wiser or better than the fathers; and it is extremely doubtful whether we enjoy ourselves as much as they did, when, in their scarlet cloaks, yellow waistcoats, and abundant leisure and room, they ornamented the Atlantic sea board, with the continent behind them. Book Memoirs of a Man s Maiden Years

Download or read book Memoirs of a Man s Maiden Years written by N. O. Body and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was born a boy, raised as a girl. . . . One may raise a healthy boy in as womanish a manner as one wishes, and a female creature in as mannish; never will this cause their senses to remain forever reversed." So writes the pseudonymous N. O. Body, born in 1884 with ambiguous genitalia and assigned a female identity in early infancy. Brought up as a girl, "she" nevertheless asserted stereotypical male behavior from early on. In the end, it was a passionate love affair with a married woman that brought matters to a head. Desperately confused, suicidally depressed, and in consultation with Magnus Hirschfeld, one of the most eminent and controversial sexologists of the day, "she" decided to become "he." Originally published in 1907 and now available for the first time in English, Memoirs of a Man's Maiden Years describes a childhood and youth in Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany that is shaped by bourgeois attitudes and stifled by convention. It is, at the same time, a book startlingly charged with sexuality. Yet, however frank the memoirist may be about matters physical or emotional, Hermann Simon reveals in his afterword the full extent of the lengths to which N. O. Body went to hide not just his true name but a second secret, his Jewish identity. And here, Sander L. Gilman suggests in his brilliant preface, may lie the crucial hint to solving the real riddle of the ambiguously gendered N. O. Body.

Book Manners for Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manners for Men Classic Reprint written by C. E. Humphry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manners for Men In introducing two men to each other the name of the inferior is mentioned first. By the in ferior I mean the younger, the less important, or of lower rank. Suppose one of the two to be a familiar friend, and another a comparatively new acquaintance, then formality requires that the familiar friend shall be introduced to the other, being named first. The reason for this is that one naturally stands more on ceremony with the man one knows least. There may be counteracting circumstances, however, which would tend to reverse this order of things, but as a general rule, the social rank of both being equal, the above holds good. Never introduce a lady to a gentle man; but always the gentleman to the lady. That is, mention the man's name first, addressing yourself to the woman thus: Allow me to introduce my friend Mr. Smith, Miss Jones. And follow this up immediately by saying, Miss Jones, addressing Mr. Smith as you 'do so. It is a grave solecism to begin by intro ducing the lady. Tyros very naturally conclude that the lady's name should be first mentioned; but on thinking it over they will soon perceive that to do so would infer that she is the lesser consideration of the two.
