Book Globalization Uncertainty and Men s Careers

Download or read book Globalization Uncertainty and Men s Careers written by Hans-Peter Blossfeld and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, argue the contributors to this book, has remarkably accelerated social and economic change in modern societies. One such change is manifested in the world of work and careers. This book explores whether the forces of globalization affect the erosion of standard career patterns of mid-career men in twelve OECD countries. Overwhelming evidence against the 'individualization of inequality' thesis is provided - it is argued that equality remains largely stratified by factors such as occupational class and educational level, and in some countries has even grown over time.

Book The Making of Lawyers Careers

Download or read book The Making of Lawyers Careers written by Robert L. Nelson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How do hierarchies of race, class, gender, and law school status condition the career trajectories of lawyers? And how do individual lawyers strategically navigate the constraints and opportunities of their environments? Where do they find professional satisfaction? This book offers an unprecedented account of opportunity structures and social stratification within the early 21st century American legal profession, combining unique longitudinal survey data with interviews, storytelling, and insights from social theory. Starting in 2000, the authors collected over 10,000 survey responses from more than 5,000 lawyers, following these lawyers through the first twenty years of their careers. They also conducted in-depth interviews with more than 200 lawyers. They contextualize their findings through attention to the features of a market-driven legal profession, in particular the growth in recent decades of the private sector relative to the public sector and corresponding disparities in earnings and status between these different segments. The analysis in this book reveals a legal profession that is highly stratified. Although individual lawyers exercise agency and often find satisfaction in their work, there are deep divisions within the profession by client type and practice setting, and women and attorneys of color face discrimination and persistent barriers to advancement. The careers of lawyers both reflect and reproduce inequalities in law and society writ large"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between unstable work careers and family transitions into adult life can vary according to the personal circumstances of individuals, as well as the welfare state system of the country. Drawing from interviews and survey data across the EU and the UK, this in-depth study explores how worker instability is perceived and experienced, and how this ‘perception’ in turn affects individuals’ economic and social situations. Book The Causes and Consequences of Increasing Inequality

Download or read book The Causes and Consequences of Increasing Inequality written by Finis Welch and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the economic boom of the 1990s, the gap between the wealthy and the poor in the United States is growing larger. While ample evidence exists to validate perceived trends in wage, income, and overall wealth disparity, there is little agreement on the causes of such inequality and what might be done to alleviate it. This volume draws together a panel of distinguished scholars who address these issues in terms comprehensible to noneconomists. Their findings are surprising, suggesting that factors such as trade imbalances, immigration rates, and differences in educational resources do not account for recent increases in the inequality of wealth and earnings. Rather, the contributors maintain that these discrepancies can be attributed to workplace demand for high-skilled labor. They also insist that further research must examine the organization of industry in order to better understand the concurrent devaluation of manual labor. Addressing a topic that is of considerable public interest, this collection helps move the issue of increasing economic inequality in America to the center of the public policy arena. Contributors: Donald R. Deere, Claudia Goldin, Lawrence F. Katz, James P. Smith, Franco Peracchi, Gary Solon, Eric A. Hanushek, Julie A. Somers, Marvin H. Kosters, William Cline, Finis Welch, Angus Deaton, Charles Murray, Kevin Murphy

Book Handbook on Women in Business and Management

Download or read book Handbook on Women in Business and Management written by D. Bilimoria and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very impressive Handbook takes established research topics about women in management and treats them in fresh and novel ways. The chapters are intellectually interesting, sound, and provocative, and meet the editors aspiration to stimulate high quality research on women s experiences in work organizations. I recommend it highly. Jean M. Bartunek, Boston College, US This comprehensive Handbook presents specially commissioned original essays on the societal roles and contexts facing women in business and management, the specific career and work life issues of women in these fields, organizational processes affecting women, and the role of women as leaders in business and management. The essays shed light on the extant structures and practices of society and organizations that constrain or facilitate women s representation, treatment, quality of life, and success. Despite decades of ongoing inquiry and increasing interest, research on women in business and management remains a specialized field without mainstream acceptance within business and management disciplines. The Handbook presents the current state of knowledge about women in business and management and specifies the directions for future research likely to be most constructive for advancing the representation, treatment, quality of life, and success of women who work in these fields. It provides the foundations for improved societal and organizational structures, policies, and relational practices affecting all in business and management. Thus, by enhancing the knowledge base that improves the work and life situations of women, it suggests ways to elevate the societal and organizational systems for all. The Handbook will be an essential reference source for recent advances in research and theory, informing both scholars of organization studies, gender, diversity, and feminism; human resource specialists; and educators of and consultants to business organizations and management.

Book Professional Practices

Download or read book Professional Practices written by Tony Becher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is recurrent public concern with enhancing the quality of professional performance. What is the con-temporary understanding of professionalism? Are the needs of professionals in various fields being met in today's world, as what is commonly called "continuing professional development" has become of a sizable industry? Many books treat the professions as a homo-geneous group and view them from an external stand-point. In Professional Practices Tony Becher investigates the differences as well as the similarities between and within professional groupings, and presents the perspec-tives of insiders. One particular theme concerns the main patterns of change in professional careers and the spe-cific problems faced by women professionals in a largely male-dominated environment. Brilliantly written, the book focuses on six professions-medicine, pharmacy, law, accountancy, architecture, and slructural engineering. The material is based on 190 interviews with a variety of members of the six professions. Becher's book offers original and sensitive insight into the working Ives of practitioners and an understanding of the ideas and values they embrace. He a'gjes that their high sense of commitment stems from a concern to enhance their individual reputations and to maintain their collective professional status. Becher highlights re variety of activities in which these professionals are engaged and the reasons for their reponses to social and political pressures from outside their fields. Above all, he seeks to demystify professionalism and to show that professional people share with others a wide range of universal human feelings and concerns. A postscript raises the issue of why -Diversities are little involved with continuing education in the professions. Practicing professionals will benefit from this insight into how people in their own and other professions cope with similar problems. Becher's volume will be particularly ap-pealing to educationists, policymakers, and social scientists interested in the subject of professionalism, those involved in the provision of initial and mid-career change for the orofessions, and those with a lay interest in the topic.
