Book Republican First Last and Always

Download or read book Republican First Last and Always written by Suzanne Bowers and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republican, First, Last, and Always: A Biography of B. Carroll Reece examines the political culture that created an intense fervor of anti-communism in America. From 1920 to 1961, B. Carroll Reece served a then unprecedented thirty-five years in the United States House of Representatives. A close friend of Robert Taft, Reece served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1946–1948 and used his position as chairman to push anti-communism to the forefront of the Republican Party’s national agenda and to help Taft try to win the presidency. His background in finance and economics led him to believe that capitalism remained America’s strongest defense against communism. He worked to eradicate any threat to the capitalist system—from trying to block government development of the Muscle Shoals Dam projects in Alabama in the 1920s to forming a congressional committee that attacked foundations created by the Ford, Rockefeller, and Carnegie families in the 1950s. Reece’s downfall and death represented the demise of Old Guard conservatives within the Republican Party as new leaders and new issues became the center of Republican politics, and his investigation contributed to the animosity towards foundations and large concentrations of wealth that continues today.

Book My First Last and Everything

Download or read book My First Last and Everything written by Michael Hart and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the authors personal journey. Over the course of the year prior to writing this book, he discovered what being in love truly means but questions why he had to do so after losing his wife, Lorna, the love of his life. Lorna took him on at his worst, brought out the best in him, and saved him from the pain of his traumatic childhood. And yet, just when they had discovered each others true purpose, she was taken away by a tiny mole on her leg. The discoveries the author made have occurred quickly, overwhelming him at times and consuming him with grief and despair as happens to most of us when we lose the one we love. Turning to the church for help only complicated things for the author. Is there no help for me now in this world, or in the next where is she now? he wondered time and time again. Having learnt so much about himself and realising that he was wrong in so many ways is bittersweet, as he cannot tell her or hear her response. True love, indeed, only comes once. Although this book reflects many complex, disturbing, and truly embarrassing moments, the author nonetheless remains undaunted in providing a tribute to his one-and-only love. Most of all, he wishes to make sure Lorna did not die in vain.

FBI agent Puller Monk and his Special Inquiries (SPIN) squad figure their latest assignment—a background check on the 1st African American female Supreme Court nominee—will be a routine investigation. But when verifying information about Federal Judge Brenda Thompson, it becomes clear that she’s lying about a 3-week gap in her past that occurred between college and law school. Her old roommate could provide answers, but she’s missing. Soon, Monk has a dead body on his hands, and he and Special Agent Lisa Sands are plunged into a maelstrom of deceit, corruption, and murder that reaches the highest levels of government. Monk is determined to blow the lid off a massive cover-up, but he may not be able to contain the fallout as the truth starts to emerge. Amid escalating violence, the FBI agent orchestrates a sting that will force a killer from the shadows—a cunning adversary who has his own plan for taking out Monk. With “engaging characters [and] a racing plot” (Houston Chronicle), this suspenseful read offers both an authentic portrayal of the world of national security and a high-tension story of corruption and murder. “The author, a former FBI agent, writes like a pro, and this is one of those thrillers you genuinely wish wouldn’t end” (Booklist, starred review).

Book Our Master s Voice

Download or read book Our Master s Voice written by James Rorty and published by mediastudies.press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was an ad-man once," James Rorty writes in this classic dissection of the advertising industry. Steeped in Rorty’s leftist politics, Our Master’s Voice presents advertising as the linchpin of a capitalist economy that it also helps justify. The book set off tremors when it was published in 1934, perhaps because its author so decisively repudiated his former profession. But Rorty and his spirited takedown of publicity were all but forgotten a decade later. The book is a neglected masterpiece, republished in this mediastudies.press edition with a new introduction by Jefferson Pooley.

Book Reflections at Journey s End

Download or read book Reflections at Journey s End written by York County Bar Association and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling series of insightful biographical sketches of the men and women of the York County Bar commencing eleven years before the start of the Civil War as recounted by contemporaries and colleagues. Candid, sincere, honest, and on occasion with a touch of comic relief, these memorial minutes are tributes to those who have made their rendezvous with mortality. Found within these volumes is the venerable Jeremiah S. Black who walked the corridors of national recognition during the Civil War era; the urbane and brilliant Herbert B. Cohen who wielded substantial political power throughout the commonwealth and rose to become an associate justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court; and the charismatic Harvey Gross whose superb advocacy in the third Hex trial and subsequent twenty-year tenure on the York County Orphans’ Court placed him in the forefront of the princes of Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence. This “callout” of the giants in no way diminishes the significance, commitment, and integrity of the many other remarkable individuals who came after and counseled and inspired others to live honestly, to exercise compassion, and to act with prudence and diligence, and above all else made their contribution to the vast and diverse panorama of our humanity. Not a typical memoir or story, these memorial minutes constitute the defining epic of the York County Bar. More than history, more than recitals of character and personality, and more than delightful encounters and more somber content, they are about individuals remembered for the richness and power of their hopes, achievements, and commitments to the timeless values of the life of the law.

Book Paint My Name in Black and Gold

Download or read book Paint My Name in Black and Gold written by Mark Andrews and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leeds, 1980. Amid the violence and decay, the city was home to an extraordinarily vibrant post-punk scene. Out of that swamp crawled the Sisters of Mercy. Over the next five years, they would rise from local heroes to leading alternative band, before blowing apart on the verge of major rock stardom. Their path was strewn with brilliant singles, astonishing EPs, exceptional album tracks and legendary live shows. Two classic line-ups were created and destroyed: Andrew Eldritch on vocals, Craig Adams on bass, Gary Marx and Ben Gunn – later replaced by Wayne Hussey – on guitars, and a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche. Hussey and Adams styled themselves as the Evil Children and played hard both on and off the stage; neither Gunn nor Marx were natural rock 'n' roll animals, but the latter performed with such abandon that it was hard to believe he also wrote the Sisters' most delicate and beautiful music. Eldritch was the most peculiar and compelling of them all, a singular and mesmerising amalgam of T. S. Eliot and David Bowie who staked a powerful claim to be the greatest rock star of his generation. Drawing on dozens of interviews with band members and key figures in the Sisters' journey, Paint My Name in Black and Gold is the most complete account yet of how – against the odds and all reasonable expectation – these young men came to make transcendent and life-changing music.

Book The Process of Government

Download or read book The Process of Government written by Arthur F. Bentley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur F. Bentley originally wrote this book over the years 1896-1908 while working as a Chicago newspaper reporter and editor, during which time he had a sense of tremendous social activity taking place, and a feeling that all the politics of the country, so to speak, were drifting across [his] desk. This prompted Bentley to develop an analysis of group interests, which he believed to be the true dictators of government decisions. He was hailed on methodological grounds as an early supporter of the behavioral revolution, which called for the use of natural scientific methods in the social sciences and for offering a group theory of politics. Bentley's implicit critique of narrow empiricism reflects the diverse influences of Dilthey, Simmel, and Dewey. The Process of Government was virtually ignored until the post-World War II period, but is now regarded as a classic in political science.
