Book Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging

Download or read book Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging written by Joel A Kubby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging brings together groundbreaking research on the use of adaptive optics for biological imaging. The book builds on prior work in astronomy and vision science. Featuring contributions by leaders in this emerging field, it takes an interdisciplinary approach that makes the subject accessible to nonspecialists who want to use adaptive optics techniques in their own work in biology and bioengineering. Organized into three parts, the book covers principles, methods, and applications of adaptive optics for biological imaging, providing the reader with the following benefits: Gives a general overview of applied optics, including definitions and vocabulary, to lay a foundation for clearer communication across disciplines Explains what kinds of optical aberrations arise in imaging through various biological tissues, and what technology can be used to correct for these aberrations Explores research done with a variety of biological samples and imaging instruments, including wide-field, confocal, and two-photon microscopes Discusses both indirect wavefront sensing, which uses an iterative approach, and direct wavefront sensing, which uses a parallel approach Since the sample is an integral part of the optical system in biological imaging, the field will benefit from participation by biologists and biomedical researchers with expertise in applied optics. This book helps lower the barriers to entry for these researchers. It also guides readers in selecting the approach that works best for their own applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful launch of viable MEMs product hinges on MEMS reliability, the reliability and qualification for MEMs based products is not widely understood. Companies that have a deep understanding of MEMs reliability view the information as a competitive advantage and are reluctant to share it. MEMs Reliability, focuses on the reliability and manufacturability of MEMS at a fundamental level by addressing process development and characterization, material property characterization, failure mechanisms and physics of failure (POF), design strategies for improving yield, design for reliability (DFR), packaging and testing.

Book Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction with a Mems Micro Mirror Device

Download or read book Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction with a Mems Micro Mirror Device written by Shaun Roger Hick and published by . This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research conducted the first demonstrated use of a micro- electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) mirror array to correct a static optical aberration. A well developed technique in adaptive optics imaging systems uses a deformable mirror to reflect the incident wave front to the imaging stage of the system. By matching the surface of the deformable mirror to the shape of the wave front phase distortion, the reflected wave front will be less aberrated before it is imaged. Typical adaptive optics systems use piezo-electric actuated deformable mirrors. This research used an electrostatically actuated, segmented mirror array, constructed by standard MEMS fabrication techniques, to investigate its performance as a deformable mirror. The relatively cheap cost of MEMS fabrication promises new adaptive optics applications if a suitable design can be found. In the demonstration, the point spread function (PSF) of the corrected and uncorrected aberrated image were compared. A 43 percent improvement in the peak intensity of the PSF was noted in the corrected image.

Book Experimental Results of a MEMS Based Adaptive Optics System

Download or read book Experimental Results of a MEMS Based Adaptive Optics System written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive optics techniques have been demonstrated in both laboratory and field tests, with a great level of scientific satisfaction, especially in astronomical and surveillance communities. Such successes have sparked the interest for these techniques in other fields, like biomedical imaging and industrial applications. However, to decrease complexity and costs, both very important issues for applications other than astronomical and surveillance, new technologies have to be brought to fruition. MEMS are becoming a very important player in this arena. We describe a portable adaptive optics (AO) system based on a MEM device that has been tested in both laboratory and field experiments. Results of these tests are discussed. Capabilities and shortcomings of this technology are discussed. A look at future applications and trends is given.

Book Extreme Adaptive Optics Testbed

Download or read book Extreme Adaptive Optics Testbed written by J. W. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''Extreme'' adaptive optics systems are optimized for ultra-high-contrast applications, such as ground-based extrasolar planet detection. The Extreme Adaptive Optics Testbed at UC Santa Cruz is being used to investigate and develop technologies for high-contrast imaging, especially wavefront control. We use a simple optical design to minimize wavefront error and maximize the experimentally achievable contrast. A phase shifting diffraction interferometer (PSDI) measures wavefront errors with sub-nm precision and accuracy for metrology and wavefront control. Previously, we have demonstrated RMS wavefront errors of 1.5 nm and a contrast of10{sup 7} over a substantial region using a shaped pupil without a deformable mirror. Current work includes the installation and characterization of a 1024-actuator Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) deformable mirror, manufactured by Boston Micro-Machines for active wavefront control. Using the PSDI as the wavefront sensor we have flattened the deformable mirror to 1 nm within the controllable spatial frequencies and measured a contrast in the far field of10{sup 6}. Consistent flattening required testing and characterization of the individual actuator response, including the effects of dead and low-response actuators. Stability and repeatability of the MEMS devices was also tested. Ultimately this testbed will be used to test all aspects of the system architecture for an extrasolar planet-finding AO system.
