Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing happens by chance in the lives of people who belong to the Lord. Everything occurs according to the unfathomable but wise decree of our God. Such is the case with the stories in this book. Mennonitische Märtyrer was an attempt to collect information about the fate of Mennonite ministers during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. This compilation resulted in a two-volume set including biographical sketches, poems, and narrative accounts. Mennonite Martyrs now provides English-speaking people the opportunity to gain inspiration and make commitments because of the challenge that this "modern martyrology" brings. The stories of faithfulness, suffering, and death demand a response from the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Konrad's Red Quarter Moon is the gripping account of her search for family members lost and disappeared within the Soviet Union. Konrad's ancestors, Mennonites, had settled the Ukrainian steppes in the late 1790s. An ethno-religious minority, they became special objects of Soviet persecution. Though her parents fled in 1929, many relatives remained in the USSR. Konrad's search for these missing extended family members took place over twenty years and five continents - on muddy roads, lonesome steppes, and in old letters, documents, or secret police archives. Her story emerges as both haunting and inspiring, filled with dramatically different accounts from survivors now scattered across the world. She aligns the voices of her subjects chronologically against the backdrop of Soviet policy, intertwining the historical context of the Terror Years with her own personal quest. Red Quarter Moon is an enthralling journey into the past that offers a unique look at the lives of ordinary families and individuals in the USSR.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book None But Saints written by James Urry and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mennonites are heirs to the Anabaptist movement of the Reformation period in Western and Central Europe. Mennonite groups from what is today the Netherlands and northwestern Germany settled in Danzig (Gdansk) and Polish-Prussia from the sixteenth century on-wards. At the end of the eighteenth century large numbers of their descendants began to emigrate to the southern steppes of the Ukraine, a movement which continued well into the nineteenth century. This book deals with the first century of Russian Mennonite settlement, and the dynamics of change in Mennonite communities in Russia between 1789 and 1889. It chronicles the establishment in southern Russia of prosperous agrarian colonies, the foundation of religious congregations and the creation of new economic, social and political institutions. Mennonites in Russia had to face the dual challenge of the emergence of a modern, industrial society and the increasing power of the Russian State. As Mennonites responded to these challenges, and some grew rich and successful, tension and conflict in their communities increased. This resulted in the division of congregations and communities and the further emigration of many Mennonites to North America." -- Back cover

Book Lost Fatherland

    Book Details:
  • Author : John B. Toews
  • Publisher : Regent College Publishing
  • Release : 1995-04
  • ISBN : 9781573830416
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Lost Fatherland written by John B. Toews and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 1995-04 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book portrays one of the most dramatic episodes in recent Mennonite history. Set against the background of the early Soviet era in Russia, it narrates the story of a small religious and ethnic group caught in the tenacious grasp of political upheaval and social change. Having devoted a century of toil to the country whose patronage attracted them early in the nineteenth century, the Russian Mennonites faced a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions after 1917. Progressively uprooted by the cross-currents of revolution, they began a struggle for survival in which every alternative offering even a vague promise of a better future was explored. Lost Fatherland stresses the economic, social, cultural, and religious aspects related to the ultimate failure of the Mennonite dialogue with communism. Once convinced Russia held no future for them, the colonists formulated plans for mass emigration. The story of the exodus was one of endurance, fortitude, patience and faith. For many the movement was overshadowed by the constant threat of failure. It ended in heartbreak for the majority of settlers, for only one quarter of the Mennonite minority in Russia managed to find a new home in Canada. John B. Toews (PhD, University of Colorado) is Professor of Church History and Anabaptist Studies at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. His other books include Perilous Journey: The Mennonite Brethren in Russia, 1860-1910 and The Diaries of David Epp, 1837-1843.
