Book excerpt: Memories. Donovan is drowning in them. Keraun is running from them. And Gabby wishes she could find them, because without past life memories, magic doesn't work. Finally, Gabby gets what she's always wanted: proof that not only is magic real, it's her destiny. But there's something deeply wrong with the world, and before she can explore her newfound talents, she has to fix it. Donovan is certain the Netica Project is part of the problem with Earth's magic. With help from Gabby and the Darkhaven team, she must close it down. But she can't think or function while Johann, her childhood torturer, is still alive, and her need for vengeance might cost her everything. Keraun has found Gabby after years of searching for his prophesied partner, and their relationship is more than he ever dared to hope for. Together, they might save the world – if he can face the demons in his troubled past before everything falls apart. Memory Weave is the third book in the Lightless Prophecy, a galaxy-spanning adventure of magic and gods, love and betrayal, and a quest to find out what holds the stars together in the dark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At a time when the memoir has never been more popular, Memory and Narrative presents an account of how the weave of life-writing has altered over time to arrive at its present form. James Olney, tells the story of an evolving literary form that originated in the autobiographical writings of St. Augustine, underwent profound and disruptive changes in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's life-writing trilogy, and found its momentary conclusion in the body of Samuel Beckett's work." "Among other issues, Olney considers the rejection of the pronoun "I" by many post-Rousseau writers; the uses of narrative in the works of Beckett, Franz Kafka, and the sculptor Alberto Giacometti, and the role of literary memory in light of recent "memory work" from a variety of scientific disciplines. Giambattista Vico, Henry Adams, Gertrude Stein, Richard Wright, and Christa Wolf are some of the many writers examined in this monumental study." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: Eliza Spalding Warren was just a child when she was taken hostage by the Cayuse Indians during a massacre in 1847. Now the young mother of two children, Eliza faces a different kind of dislocation; her impulsive husband wants them to make a new start in another territory, which will mean leaving her beloved home and her departed mother's grave--and returning to the land of her captivity. Eliza longs to know how her mother, an early missionary to the Nez Perce Indians, dealt with the challenges of life with a sometimes difficult husband and with her daughter's captivity. When Eliza is finally given her mother's diary, she is stunned to find that her own memories are not necessarily the whole story of what happened. Can she lay the dark past to rest and move on? Or will her childhood memories always hold her hostage? Based on true events, The Memory Weaver is New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick's latest literary journey into the past, where threads of western landscapes, family, and faith weave a tapestry of hope inside every pioneering woman's heart. Readers will find themselves swept up in this emotional story of the memories that entangle us and the healing that awaits us when we bravely unravel the threads of the past.

Book The Fabric of Interface

Download or read book The Fabric of Interface written by Stephen Monteiro and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the genealogy of our physical interaction with mobile devices back to textile and needlecraft culture. For many of our interactions with digital media, we do not sit at a keyboard but hold a mobile device in our hands. We turn and tilt and stroke and tap, and through these physical interactions with an object we make things: images, links, sites, networks. In The Fabric of Interface, Stephen Monteiro argues that our everyday digital practice has taken on traits common to textile and needlecraft culture. Our smart phones and tablets use some of the same skills—manual dexterity, pattern making, and linking—required by the handloom, the needlepoint hoop, and the lap-sized quilting frame. Monteiro goes on to argue that the capacity of textile metaphors to describe computing (weaving code, threaded discussions, zipped files, software patches, switch fabrics) represents deeper connections between digital communication and what has been called “homecraft” or “women's work.” Connecting networked media to practices that seem alien to media technologies, Monteiro identifies handicraft and textile techniques in the production of software and hardware, and cites the punched cards that were read by a loom's rods as a primitive form of computer memory; examines textual and visual discourses that position the digital image as a malleable fabric across its production, access, and use; compares the digital labor of liking, linking, and tagging to such earlier forms of collective production as quilting bees and piecework; and describes how the convergence of intimacy and handiwork at the screen interface, combined with needlecraft aesthetics, genders networked culture and activities in unexpected ways.

Book Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects

Download or read book Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects written by Tom Knisely and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join expert weaver and teacher Tom Knisely in his exploration of Huck Lace! "Lace Weaves" are best described as loom controlled warp and weft floats on a Plain Weave ground fabric. The term "Color and Weave Effects" refers to a careful arrangement of light and dark colored threads in the warp and weft that weave into beautiful patterns. Log Cabin is probably the best known color and weave pattern. Combining Huck with Color and Weave orders opened the door to astonishing pattern possibilities. He then came up with four color arrangements: Light and Dark, Complimentary Colors, Monochromatic, and Triadic colors. With 144 patterns and four color themes for each pattern, that's 576 patterns. Each pattern includes the full draft and a woven sample for reference. Tom also includes full details for five projects that are perfect for weaving Huck: dish towels, mug rugs, baby blanket, and two scarves. Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects is an essential resource that you will turn to for inspiration and guidance again and again.
