Download or read book Edmonton In Our Own Words written by Linda Goyette and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Goyette and Carolina Roemmich have tapped Edmonton's collective memoir, through the written record, the spoken stories and the vast silences. All of the people who ever lived at this bend in the North Saskatchewan took part in creating the city we know as Edmonton. Through traditional Indigenous stories about the earliest travellers along the bend in the river, diaries, archival records and letters of 19th century inhabitants and the recollections of living residents who talk about the emerging city, Edmonton's history is told using the words and stories of the people who have called this city home. Citizens with diverse viewpoints speak for themselves, describing important events in Edmonton's social, political and economic development. The official publication of the City of Edmonton's Centennial, Edmonton In Our Own Words includes many never seen before photographs from private collections, historic maps and a timeline of Edmonton's history. Imagine a conversation between Edmonton's past inhabitants and its living citizens. What would we tell the rest of the world about our place on the map? What stories would we tell with tears in our eyes, or laughter, or pride? In Edmonton In Our Own Words, experience the personal stories of eyewitnesses and descendants explaining, arguing, crying, scolding, laughing and interrupting one another in a city's evolving conversation with itself as Edmonton celebrates its past and future.

Download or read book Pulling Through written by Catherine Jessop and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And at that exact moment, the earth tipped, and we all slid into a parallel universe..." On Christmas Day 2016, the Jessops were just an ordinary family, but on Boxing Day, one near-death experience swept them all into the bewildering world of hospitals and serious illness, and their lives changed forever. Pulling Through is a handbook of everything Catherine has learned on their journey. It covers many practicalities, such as explaining hospital tests and scans, jargon-busting medical terms, finance, rehabilitation and more. But it also illuminates the emotional aspect of illness and how massively it affects family and friends. There are chapters on the power of nature, music, counselling, optimism and humour, and how to look after the mental health of both patient and carer. This is a book of hope, help and reassurance on every aspect of coping with life-changing illness in the family: the good, the bad, the funny, the sad, and the useful. If you, or someone you know, has a life-changing illness, then this book is here to help.

Download or read book Principles of Politics Applicable to All Governments written by Benjamin Constant and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) was born in Switzerland and became one of France's leading writers, as well as a journalist, philosopher, and politician. His colourful life included a formative stay at the University of Edinburgh; service at the court of Brunswick, Germany; election to the French Tribunate; and initial opposition and subsequent support for Napoleon, even the drafting of a constitution for the Hundred Days. Constant wrote many books, essays, and pamphlets. His deepest conviction was that reform is hugely superior to revolution, both morally and politically. While Constant's fluid, dynamic style and lofty eloquence do not always make for easy reading, his text forms a coherent whole, and in his translation Dennis O'Keeffe has focused on retaining the 'general elegance and subtle rhetoric' of the original. Sir Isaiah Berlin called Constant 'the most eloquent of all defenders of freedom and privacy' and believed to him we owe the notion of 'negative liberty', that is, what Biancamaria Fontana describes as "the protection of individual experience and choices from external interferences and constraints." To Constant it was relatively unimportant whether liberty was ultimately grounded in religion or metaphysics -- what mattered were the practical guarantees of practical freedom -- "autonomy in all those aspects of life that could cause no harm to others or to society as a whole." This translation is based on Etienne Hofmann's critical edition of Principes de politique (1980), complete with Constant's additions to the original work.

Download or read book Neuroimaging Biomarkers and Cognition in Alzheimer s disease Spectrum written by Jiu Chen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) with self-reported concerns and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are well-established to be at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia and a clinical continuum of dementia progression as a spectrum of AD. AD may develop from SCD to MCI (early MCI and late MCI) and eventually to AD. Nevertheless, until recently little was known about their pathophysiology associated with cognitive-behavioral syndrome. Although for researchers, scientists and clinicians, the pathophysiology of AD spectrum is an intriguing issue, delineating it in a clear way is far from easy. Taken together, in-depth understanding of neuroimaging-based pathology behind cognitive impairments across AD spectrum may help to develop new strategy for the early diagnosis and treatment of AD. Neuroimaging has been thought to potentially reveal the pathological mechanisms of AD progression. Individuals across AD spectrum are often associated with anatomical and functional brain alterations and cognitive impairment, most of the pathophysiology will focus primarily on the brain. To investigate brain structures and functions associated with cognition, neuroimaging will be the most appropriate tool.
