Book Memory Lane Was a Gravel Road for Eight Generations

Download or read book Memory Lane Was a Gravel Road for Eight Generations written by Ed Butler and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed Butler is fortunate to know so many stories about his ancestors. Some of the stories have been handed down for several generations. Others are his experiences. Often they bring to mind more questions than they answer. If you were homesteading land in 1821and your husband went to clear land one afternoon and totally disappeared, how would you survive? Could you survive a fifty mile trip in an ox cart, much of it through swampy woodlands, with three small children? The youngest was not old enough to eat solid food! Do you know anyone fourteen years old that left home and was gone for nearly six years before returning? Ed states that his Dad is the only person he ever knew that had traveled and lived in a covered wagon and the only person he knew that had trained and worked three yokes of oxen. His Dad milked cows for sixty-two years and was an animal whisperer long before the term horse whisperer was coined. Ed's Mother had a two year teachers certificate and taught school in a one room schoolhouse before she got married. She sure knew how to maintain order in her classroom! Have you ever eaten dried Tennessee strawberries? How many people that you know have owned a horse and top buggy and have driven it in a local parade? These stories and many others are told in this narrative. Often, Ed provides details and explains the terms he uses so today's reader can understand how he was raised and how eight generations survived the hardships they encountered.

Book Down Mason City s Memory Lane

Download or read book Down Mason City s Memory Lane written by Dale C. Fancher and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mason City, Illinois, a tiny rural community in the heart of the Midwest, is the setting for Dale Fancher's book of reflections and memories of a day gone by. A lifelong resident of Mason City, Fancher has a keen mind, and a heart for the quaint, easily lost memories of youth: From bathing in a galvanized washtub, to trailing behind the ice-delivery truck to beg shards of ice on a hot day; from fishing at Salt Creek at night and listening to the bobcats, to World War II blackouts. Reading Fancher's book, one becomes familiar with local characters like Kenny Hanover, still barbering after fifty years, and Edna Sylvie, the barefoot taxi lady. Told as a series of "Remember when .?" and "Did you ever .?" snippets, reading this book is like flipping through an old family photo album.

Book excerpt: Miss Georgia, a bright eyed highly intelligent young woman, was slain seven years prior to the brutal murder of young Emmett Till. Regarded as an innocent, she was ahead of her times in many ways but lagged behind, awaiting others to confirm her worth. On the Ides of August, the bush shook from a thunderous racist footprint, a lurid brazen code for well-rehearsed iniquity and indisputable impiety owned by those sharing an unverifiable relationship with humanity. Toting the onerous burden of this ghastly, dark and regaled secret for some fifty long years, holding back nothing, the author reveals rather raunchy dealings privately known and secretly inferred. Miss Georgias story was adversely impacted by an onslaught of bizarre characters and circumstances. Her cryptic demise was a symbol of the quintessence darkest of times, for the prevailing mentality coddled and coveted apathy, letting sleeping dogs lie where they lay. Swishing away moral correctness like a light dusting of coal cleverly disguised as discolored rhyme and poetic jive, far too many good folk turned a blind eye, overlooking overt wickedness. Hush now. Early one wintry morn, somebody was chanting at the Old Negro Cemetery. The apparition of the Ghost of Miss Georgia Past was spiritedly conceded. Yet, for her story to meritoriously support a national kitchen table conversation, ground breaking dialogue that will hopefully help bridge the gaping American rift, her voice must be resurrected with clarity of purpose. Miss Georgia has her say so, adding fresh perspective to an overdue discussion, one worthy of having, one fostering the ideal of racial parity and reconciliation. Her liberated voice can be heard loud and clear by those owning an impeccable sense of ought and naught, folk swayed by the bush that still shakes.
