Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most marked features of the present age is the invention of labour and time saving appliances; it is evident that time saved is time gained. In an age which is specially characterised by intellectual progress, much time must necessarily be expended in the acquirement of knowledge, which will serve as a basis for further development. I hope, therefore, that any rules which will lighten labour in this direction will be found useful. After discovering the facts which led me to write on the subject of Memory, I found that I could learn a subject in about a fifth of the time that it previously took me. I hope that those who read this book will be able to improve their memories in a corresponding degree"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2013 APA, all rights reserved).

Download or read book Cultural Memory and Biodiversity written by Virginia D. Nazarea and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed and gene banks have made great strides in preserving the biological diversity of traditional agricultural plant species, but they have tended to ignore a serious component: the knowledge about those crops and methods of farming held by the people who have long raised them. Virginia Nazarea now makes a case for preserving cultural memory along with biodiversity. By exploring how indigenous people farm sweet potatoes in Bukidnon, Philippines, she discovers specific ways in which the conservation of genetic resources and the conservation of culture can support each other. Interweaving a wealth of ecological and cognitive data with oral history, Nazarea details a "memory banking" protocol for collecting and conserving cultural information to complement the genetic, agronomic, and biochemical characterization of important crops. She shows that memory banking offers significant benefits for local populationsÑnot only the preservation of traditional knowledge but also the maintenance of alternatives to large-scale agricultural development and commercialization. She also compares alternative forms of germplasm conservation conducted by a male-dominated hierarchy with those of an informal network of migrant women. Cultural Memory and Biodiversity establishes valuable guidelines for people who aspire to support community-based in situ conservation of local varieties. Perhaps more important, it shows that the traditional methods of local farmers are often as important as the "advanced" methods encouraged by advocates of modernization.
Download or read book Memory and the Jesus Tradition written by Alan Kirk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Kirk argues that memory theory, in its social, cultural, and cognitive dimensions, is able to provide a comprehensive account of the origins and history of the Jesus tradition, one capable of displacing the moribund form-critical model. He shows that memory research gives new leverage on a range of classic problems in gospels, historical Jesus, and Christian origins scholarship. This volume brings together 12 essays published between 2001 and 2016, newly revised for this edition and organized under the rubrics of: 'Memory and the Formation of the Jesus Tradition'; 'Memory and Manuscript'; 'Memory and Historical Jesus Research'; and 'Memory in 2nd Century Gospel Writing'. The introductory essay, written for this volume, argues that the old form critical model, in marginalizing memory, abandoned the one factor actually capable of accounting for the origins of the gospel tradition, its manifestation in oral and written media, and its historical trajectory.

Book excerpt: Currently, Niem Tieu's mind is just blank. She did not expect that she would be treated as a sacrificial tool. Even though that guy Lam Van is not an ugly person, his eyes are too despicable. Moreover, it seems like a lustful person. I don't know how many girls' lives I've ruined. Most importantly, I don't have any feelings for him, so how can I live with him? It's easy to say I'm a concubine, but to put it bluntly, I'm just his toy.
