Book Memory Imagination and Desire in Contemporary Anglo American Literature and Film

Download or read book Memory Imagination and Desire in Contemporary Anglo American Literature and Film written by Constanza del Río Álvaro and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a series of analyses on the renewed interest of western culture in themes and aesthetic proposals that either look back to the past or recreate future worlds. The turn of the century has witnessed artistic efforts to reconsider past literary and cinematographic forms and adapt them to the new social concerns of contemporary artists and readers/viewers. Similarly, science-fiction and utopian narratives have attempted to reshape the world as we know it and speculate about the mysteries the future might hold for us. This book includes contributions that focus on and problematise the dialogue between past, present and future in literary works and films produced within the English-speaking context in the last two decades of the 20th century. It is divided in five sections - maps of the postmodern, the postcolonial experience, stories revisited, popular narrative genres and views of the future - which attempt to include all the motifs associated with that dialogue, from the interaction of memory and history to the reformulation of old stories and forms, or the representation of dystopian and utopian futures.

Download or read book Film Music Memory written by Berthold Hoeckner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film has shaped modern society in part by changing its cultures of memory. Film, Music, Memory reveals that this change has rested in no small measure on the mnemonic powers of music. As films were consumed by growing American and European audiences, their soundtracks became an integral part of individual and collective memory. Berthold Hoeckner analyzes three critical processes through which music influenced this new culture of memory: storage, retrieval, and affect. Films store memory through an archive of cinematic scores. In turn, a few bars from a soundtrack instantly recall the image that accompanied them, and along with it, the affective experience of the movie. Hoeckner examines films that reflect directly on memory, whether by featuring an amnesic character, a traumatic event, or a surge of nostalgia. As the history of cinema unfolded, movies even began to recall their own history through quotations, remakes, and stories about how cinema contributed to the soundtrack of people’s lives. Ultimately, Film, Music, Memory demonstrates that music has transformed not only what we remember about the cinematic experience, but also how we relate to memory itself.

Book Palimpsestic Memory

Download or read book Palimpsestic Memory written by Max Silverman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interconnections between histories and memories of the Holocaust, colonialism and extreme violence in post-war French and Francophone fiction and film provide the central focus of this book. It proposes a new model of ‘palimpsestic memory’, which the author defines as the condensation of different spatio-temporal traces, to describe these interconnections and defines the poetics and the politics of this composite form. In doing so it is argued that a poetics dependent on tropes and techniques, such as metaphor, allegory and montage, establishes connections across space and time which oblige us to perceive cultural memory not in terms of its singular attachment to a particular event or bound to specific ethno-cultural or national communities but as a dynamic process of transfer between different moments of racialized violence and between different cultural communities. The structure of the book allows for both the theoretical elaboration of this paradigm for cultural memory and individual case-studies of novels and films.

Book Film and the Ethical Imagination

Download or read book Film and the Ethical Imagination written by Asbjorn Gronstad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the turn to ethics in literature, film, and visual culture. It discusses the concept of a biovisual ethics, offering a new theory of the relation between film and ethics based on the premise that images are capable of generating their own ethical content. This ethics operates hermeneutically and materializes in cinema’s unique power to show us other modes of being. The author considers a wealth of contemporary art films and documentaries that embody ethical issues through the very form of the text. The ethical imagination generated by films such as The Nine Muses, Post Tenebras Lux, Amour, and Nostalgia For the Light is crucially defined by openness, uncertainty, opacity, and the refusal of hegemonic practices of visual representation.

Download or read book Performing Memories written by Gabriele Biotti and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is memory today? How can it be approached? Why does the contemporary world seem to be more and more haunted by different types of memories still asking for elaboration? Which artistic experiences have explored and defined memory in meaningful ways? How do technologies and the media have changed it? These are just some of the questions developed in this collection of essays analysing memory and memory shapes, which explores the different ways in which past time and its elaboration have been, and still are, elaborated, discussed, written or filmed, and contested, but also shared. By gathering together scholars from different fields of investigation, this book explores the cultural, social and artistic tensions in representing the past and the present, in understanding our legacies, and in approaching historical time and experience. Through the analysis of different representations of memory, and the investigation of literature, anthropology, myth and storytelling, a space of theories and discourses about the symbolic and cultural spaces of memory representation is developed.

Book Literature and the Metaphoric Universe in the Mind

Download or read book Literature and the Metaphoric Universe in the Mind written by Nicolae Babuts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicolae Babuts believes that the study of metaphoric thought and literature can be enriched by the application of recent discoveries from neuroscientific c experiments. He maintains that metaphors are neither linguistic formations nor conceptual formations, but instead the product of association of images and language. They are a matter of vision.Memory is an essential component in the creation of meaning and is the way the mind receives messages from the outside world. In this process of transferring data from the outside world, the mind's overriding tendency is to integrate and interpret. Thus, incoming messages are recognized and given meaning whether they are in harmony with the inner world of the mind or in confl ict with it.Babuts argues that the literature we read is related to our perception of reality. And reality has two identities: the physical identity of the outside world and its symbolic identity within memory. The symbolic identity of the outside world is represented internally by the metaphoric universe in the mind.

Book Hugo Munsterberg on Film

Download or read book Hugo Munsterberg on Film written by Hugo Münsterberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugo Münsterberg's The Photoplay (1916) is regarded as the first serious work of film theory. In this new edition, Allan Langdale provides a critical introduction and collects numerous hard-to-find writings on film by Münsterberg. Münsterberg argues that film is a unique medium because it speaks the language of the mind. For example, he equates the close-up with the act of attention and the flashback with the act of memory. His writings are fascinating accounts of the psychological elements of film and provide valuable insight into the reception of film as art at the beginning of the century. Hugo Münsterberg on Film will be of great interest not only to film theorists and historians, but also those interested in the history of psychology.

Book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Download or read book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly written by Jean-Dominique Bauby and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triumphant memoir by the former editor-in-chief of French Elle that reveals an indomitable spirit and celebrates the liberating power of consciousness. In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.

It also explores the possibility of transnational and trans-local social sphere in the interstices of layered colonial legacies, nation-state domination, and global capitalism. Considering Taiwan cinema in the wake of globalization, it analyses how these films represent the socio-political transition among multiple colonial legacies, global capitalism, and the changing cross-strait relation between Taiwan and the Mainland China. The book discusses how these films represent nomadic urban middle class, displaced transnational migrant workers, roaming children and young gangsters, and explores how the continuity/disjuncture of globalization has not only carved into historical and personal memories and individual bodies, but also influenced the transnational production modes and marketing strategies of cinema.
