Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Yale Life and Men 1845-1899 For the graduates of Yale, whether of the earlier or the later time, the writer hopes that the story may have an interest because it tells somewhat of the growth and progress, during the half - century just ended, of the institution which they love. For others, who as friends of the University are ever ready to rejoice in its well being, he trusts that the book will carry in itself a pleas ant record of the past and a happy prophecy of the future; - while to all, wherever they may be, who prize the privilege of the higher education, its pages, if they chance to read them, cannot fail, as he thinks, to bring some word of encouragement that the blessings attend ant upon this privilege will hereafter be yet greater and more widely extended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys and Men: A Story of Life at Yale "Hello! Anybody at home? Are you in, Jack?" Billy pushed the door of 162 Farnam as wide open as it would go, and looked in. "What are you doing?" "Ploughing," returned Jack, placidly, as he thrust head and shoulders into a yawning trunk. "When did you arrive, William?" "Oh! lately. Can I come in?" "You can if you can," observed Jack. "How is the boy, Billy?" "Me? Sound, thanks." "I am glad to hear it. Climb in and help me. Be useful. Got any conditions?" "Don't speak of it. Hang them! Yes, four. Mathematics, mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics!" Jack grinned "You're a proud scholar, Bill, but it's pleasant to see you with such a summery expression on your young phiz." Book Randall Lee Gibson of Louisiana

Download or read book Randall Lee Gibson of Louisiana written by Mary Gorton McBride and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randall Lee Gibson of Louisiana offers the first biography of one of Louisiana's most intriguing nineteenth-century politicians and a founder of Tulane University. Gibson (1832--1892) grew up on his family's sugar plantation in Terrebonne Parish and was educated at Yale University before studying law at the University of Louisiana in New Orleans. He purchased a sugar plantation in Lafourche Parish in 1858 and became heavily involved in the pro-secession faction of the Democratic Party. Elected colonel of the Thirteenth Louisiana Volunteer Regiment at the start of the Civil War, he commanded a brigade in the Battle of Shiloh and fought in all of the subsequent campaigns of the Army of Tennessee, concluding in 1865 with the Battle of Spanish Fort. As Gibson struggled to establish a law practice in postwar New Orleans, he experienced a profound change in his thinking and came to believe that the elimination of slavery was the one good outcome of the South's defeat. Joining Louisiana's Conservative political faction, he advocated for a postwar unification government that included African Americans. Elected to Congress in 1874, Gibson was directly involved in the creation of the Electoral Commission that resulted in the Compromise of 1877 and peacefully solved the disputed 1876 presidential election. He crafted legislation for the Mississippi River Commission in 1879, which eventually resulted in millions of federal dollars for flood control. Gibson was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1880 and became Louisiana's leading "minister of reconciliation" with his northern colleagues and its chief political spokesman during the highly volatile Gilded Age. He deplored the growing gap between the rich and the poor and embraced a reformist agenda that included federal funding for public schools and legislation for levee construction, income taxes, and the direct election of senators. This progressive stance made Gibson one of the last patrician Democrats whose noblesse oblige politics sought common middle ground between the extreme political and social positions of his era. At the request of wealthy New Orleans merchant Paul Tulane, Gibson took charge of Tulane's educational endowment and helped design the university that bears Tulane's name, serving as the founding president of the board of administrators. Highly readable and thoroughly researched, Mary Gorton McBride's absorbing biography illuminates in dramatic fashion the life and times of a unique Louisianan.

Book Memoirs and Select Remains of Charles Pond

Download or read book Memoirs and Select Remains of Charles Pond written by Ray Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, and Select Remains, of Charles Pond: Late Member of the Sophomore Class in Yale College Soon after the death of the beloved and highly gifted subject of the following Memoirs, it was suggested to his friends by several who had been well acquainted with his character, that a sketch of his life including extracts from his correspondence and miscellaneous writings might subserve a valuable purpose. It is with this hope that this little volume has been com piled, and it is now submitted to the public. It is what it professes to be, a selection merely; much has been left, both of his correspondence and other matter, equally interesting, perhaps, as that which has been extracted. It has been the'aim of the compiler, however, to make a selection of such variety as to exhibit all the several features of his character. That arrangement has been adopted which was thought best calculated to illustrate the regular progress of his mind. The letters and papers, are inserted in the order of time in which they were written; and the business of the compiler has been only to connect them together, adding just so much as seemed neces sary to complete the picture.
