This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials for the History of the Franciscan Province of Ireland, A. D. 1230-1450 IN 1908 the Rev. Father Fitzmaurice of Drogheda con sented, at my request, to prepare. For the British Society of Franciscan Studies a volume of extracts on the History of the Irish Franciscan Province during the Middle Ages. The work was to be in annalistic form, and to be based, so far as possible, on original sources; or, when these could not be found, on the best and earliest secondary sources available. For the next few years we were in constant communication on the subject; Father Fitzmaurice sent me his collections from time to time for criticism and revision, and I agreed to supplement his researches in Ireland by researches in the ms. Collections in England. He had brought the work down to the year 1447 when he was appointed Guardian of Waterford in 191 1, and, two years later just as he was hoping to resume his historical work - death ended his labours. Book The Irish Classical Self

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurie O'Higgins
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-09
  • ISBN : 0191079820

Download or read book The Irish Classical Self written by Laurie O'Higgins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Classical Self considers the role of classical languages and learning in the construction of Irish cultural identities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing in particular on the "lower ranks" of society. This eighteenth century notion of the "classical self" grew partly out of influential identity narratives developed in the seventeenth century by clerics on the European continent: responding to influential critiques of the Irish as ignorant barbarians, they published works demonstrating the value and antiquity of indigenous culture and made traditional annalistic claims about the antiquity of Irish and connections between Ireland and the biblical and classical world broadly known. In the eighteenth century these and related ideas spread through Irish poetry, which demonstrated the complex and continuing interaction of languages in the country: a story of conflict, but also of communication and amity. The "classical strain" in the context of the non-elite may seem like an unlikely phenomenon but the volume exposes the truth in the legend of the classical hedge schools which offered tuition in Latin and Greek to poor students, for whom learning and claims to learning had particular meaning and power. This volume surveys official data on schools and scholars together with literary and other narratives, showing how the schools, inherently transgressive because of the Penal Laws, drove concerns about class and political loyalty and inspired seductive but contentious retrospectives. It demonstrates that classical interests among those "in the humbler walks of life" ran in the same channels as interests in Irish literature and contemporary Irish poetry and demands a closer look at the phenomenon in its entirety.

Book Liturgy Books and Franciscan Identity in Medieval Umbria

Download or read book Liturgy Books and Franciscan Identity in Medieval Umbria written by Anna Welch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Liturgy, Books and Franciscan Identity in Medieval Umbria, Anna Welch explores how Franciscan friars engaged with manuscript production networks operating in Umbria in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries to produce the missals essential to their liturgical lives. A micro-history of Franciscan liturgical activity, this study reassesses methodologies pertinent to manuscript studies and reflects on both the construction of communal identity through ritual activity and historiographic trends regarding this process. Welch focuses on manuscripts decorated by the ateliers of the Maestro di Deruta-Salerno (active c. 1280) and Maestro Venturella di Pietro (active c. 1317), in particular the Codex Sancti Paschalis, a missal now owned by the Australian Province of the Order of Friars Minor.
