Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Sir Walter Scott Eleven years we now may tell, Since we have known each other well; Since, riding side by side, our hand First drew the voluntary brand; And sure, through many a varied scene, Unkindness never came between. Marmion, Introduction to Canto IV. James Skene of Rubislaw, near Aberdeen, was born on the 7th March 1775. His father, a brilliant but erratic young barrister, died the year after his birth, and he was left to the guardianship of his mother, the heiress of the Jacobite Moirs of Stoneywood, a woman of character and eccentricity, who shocked her contemporaries by such extravagances as making her annual journey to Edinburgh on horseback in a scarlet riding-habit. By the early death of his elder brother he inherited Rubislaw at the age of sixteen, and his mother then removed him from the High School at Edinburgh and set him to find his way alone to Hanau in Germany to complete his education - no small feat for a boy of sixteen in the year of the Revolution. Download or read book Memoirs of Sir Walter Scott Vol 5 of 5 Classic Reprint written by J. G. Lockhart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 5 of 5 In dismissing the last volume of this work, I have to apologize for some mistakes, which shall be corrected in the text, should it reach a second edition. I notice such as have been pointed out to me, but I am afraid very many more might be detected on a careful revision, and I shall be thankful for any suggestions on this head. I find, from the evidence of documents kindly forwarded to me by my friend, Dr. Macfarlane, Principal of the University of Glasgow, that the cause of the minister, M'Naught, in which Sir Walter Scott made his first appearance at the bar of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was heard in May 1793, not 1795. It appears, that another person alluded to in connexion with his early practice as a barrister, killed accidentally in July, 1795, was not door-keeper to the Faculty of Advocates, but bar-keeper to the Court of Session. These situations are not, it seems, held by individuals of exactly the same rank in society; and a relation of the bar-keeper has favoured me with a conspectus of his pedigree; which, however, I do not think it necessary to insert here. I have received a letter from Kelso, complaining sharply of an extract from Sir Walters MSS., in which (vol. i.p. 94)a lady, known to him in his youth, is described as having been seen by him afterwards in the situation of governess to a manufacturers children in Paisley. For this mistake, if it was one, I cannot account. I have been informed of my error in stating (vol. ii. p.27) that Francis, the eighth Lord Napier, had been a lord of the bed-chamber. I had confounded him, it seems, with the late Earl of Morton, who succeeded him as Commissioner to the General Assembly. Book Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by James Hogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott There is, however, another side to this picture. While to one who in the height of summer drives along the beautiful tree-sheltered road that follows the course of the Yarrow or the Ettrick everything presents visions of quiet loveliness, verdant holms embraced by softly murmuring streams, and shaded by full-foliaged trees, further up both valleys become much barer. This bleakness and bareness were more pronounced less than a century ago. Washington Irving, who visited Sir Walter Scott in the month of August, 1816, and was taken by him to some height which commanded an extensive prospect, tells how his host pointed out place after place famous in Border legend or poetry. While Sir Walter was going on with his localisation of poetic memories, Irving confesses: I gazed about me with mute surprise; I may say disappointment. I beheld a mere succession of grey waving hills, line beyond line as far as my eye could reach, monotonous in their aspect, and so destitute of trees that one could almost see a stout fly walking along their profile; and the far-famed Tweed appeared a naked stream flowing between hills, without a tree or a thicket on its banks.
