Book Memories of Old Cahaba Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of Old Cahaba Classic Reprint written by Anna M. Gayle Fry and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Old Cahaba In the following pages I have been particular in my descriptions of Cahaba, because I wanted to present as nearly as possible a "pen picture" of the place as it existed and the people as I recollect them before time and age shall have entirely obliterated the scenes from memory. I have faithfully endeavored to describe truthfully each place as it was, the individuals as they appeared, and life as it was lived in the old days. In doing this, I have attempted to do what others better fitted should have done, for there is no place richer in history and tradition and none more worthy the pen of the most gifted writer. Book excerpt: Montevallo: a mountain in a valley. This bucolic, natural phrase aptly describes the beauty of this central Alabama town. Early settlers were drawn to the area by its abundant agricultural and mineral resources, and in 1826, the tiny village of Montevallo was born. The nature of the town changed significantly in 1896 with the founding of the Alabama Girls Industrial School, now the University of Montevallo. The Olmsted Brothers firm of Brookline, Massachusetts, laid out the central campus, and its master plan still inspires current development. Since 1896, the focus of the town has shifted from agriculture and mining to education. The universitys mission is to be Alabamas Public Liberal Arts College. Prominent figures include writer and veteran E. B. Sledge, actresses Polly Holliday and Rebecca Luker, and Major League Baseball player Rusty Greer.

Book Birmingham Then and Now

Download or read book Birmingham Then and Now written by Todd Keith and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A late arrival on the Southern landscape, the city of Birmingham was not incorporated until after the Civil War. In fact, from 1820 to 1871, what is now Birmingham was known as the hamlet of Elyton, a small crossroads set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where several Pony Express and stage routes crossed paths. When two railroads eventually intersected at this point—where, significantly, all the ingredients necessary to make iron existed in close proximity—the region’s growth exploded. Birmingham’s history is not a story of the grace and vanished grandeur of an antebellum past, but rather, a dynamic story of modern American industrialization.Sites covered include: Hollywood, Alabama State Fairgrounds, Vulcan Park, Mountain Brook Village, The Old Mill, Avondale Park, Highland Park, Woodlawn High, Quinlan Castle, Five Points South, Bottega Favorita, Old Jefferson County Courthouse, Capitol Park, Tutwiler Hotel, Twentieth Street, Louise Wooster Brothel, Alabama Theatre, Kress Department Store, Joy Young Restaurant, Terminal Station, Molton Hotel, Lovemans, Massey Building, Bright Star, Temple of Sibyl, Sloss Furnaces, Red Mountain and Legion Field.

Book excerpt: I was born in 1935 in a coal mining camp in Bibb County, Alabama, called Piper-Coleanor, back when the company doctor (W. E. Stinson) would come to your house and deliver your child for $15. That was during the Depression, and then came World War II. Most everyone was in poverty with no government programs. Later on, the government would give us limited rice, cheese, and beans to have something to eat. The hard times as youngsters gave us more ambition to come out of poverty as we got older. I am eighty-five years old and working five to six days a week. I have been a security guard at Mercedes Benz for eleven years and ten months, and I have only missed two days. We have eighty guards, and they say I am the most dependable guard they have.

  • Author : Frank Adams
  • Publisher : University of Alabama Press
  • Release : 2012-09-04

Download or read book Doc written by Frank Adams and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography of jazz elder statesman Frank “Doc” Adams, highlighting his role in Birmingham, Alabama’s, historic jazz scene and tracing his personal adventure that parallels, in many ways, the story and spirit of jazz itself. Doc tells the story of an accomplished jazz master, from his musical apprenticeship under John T. “Fess” Whatley and his time touring with Sun Ra and Duke Ellington to his own inspiring work as an educator and bandleader. Central to this narrative is the often-overlooked story of Birmingham’s unique jazz tradition and community. From the very beginnings of jazz, Birmingham was home to an active network of jazz practitioners and a remarkable system of jazz apprenticeship rooted in the city’s segregated schools. Birmingham musicians spread across the country to populate the sidelines of the nation’s bestknown bands. Local musicians, like Erskine Hawkins and members of his celebrated orchestra, returned home heroes. Frank “Doc” Adams explores, through first-hand experience, the history of this community, introducing readers to a large and colorful cast of characters—including “Fess” Whatley, the legendary “maker of musicians” who trained legions of Birmingham players and made a significant mark on the larger history of jazz. Adams’s interactions with the young Sun Ra, meanwhile, reveal life-changing lessons from one of American music’s most innovative personalities. Along the way, Adams reflects on his notable family, including his father, Oscar, editor of the Birmingham Reporter and an outspoken civic leader in the African American community, and Adams’s brother, Oscar Jr., who would become Alabama’s first black supreme court justice. Adams’s story offers a valuable window into the world of Birmingham’s black middle class in the days before the civil rights movement and integration. Throughout, Adams demonstrates the ways in which jazz professionalism became a source of pride within this community, and he offers his thoughts on the continued relevance of jazz education in the twenty-first century.
