Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The work of the United States Sanitary Commission in aiding the Federal war effort cannot be underestimated. Through its tens of thousands of members spread all across the North, they brought succour and aid to U.S. Army soldiers and particularly their sick and wounded. One of its most distinguished members was Mary Livermore, a seasoned advocate of liberal rights (and after the Civil War, Women’s Sufferage), who was at the forefront of the medical effort of the U.S.S.C. Her memoirs in the front-line hospital and wards spanned from the early days of the Civil War at the battle of Shiloh right through to its conclusion. She was also heavily involved in the fund raising efforts of her commission and received backing from the highest sources.

Book Fannie Beers Civil War

Download or read book Fannie Beers Civil War written by Fannie A. Beers and published by . This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dauntless and humane woman of the South Young Fannie Beers, a Connecticut girl, married southerner A. P. Beers when he was a student at Yale. Naturally, she accompanied him to his home and there she formed an abiding affection for the land and its people. When the Civil War broke out her husband enlisted in the Confederate Army becoming a sergeant in Fenner's Louisiana Light Artillery. Fannie, with one small child and pregnant with a second, moved back to the security of her Northern family. Her support for the Southern cause and her refusal to renounce it soon made her position in the north untenable, so she returned to her husband's side. She thereafter worked with great commitment as a nurse with Confederate forces in Virginia, Georgia and Alabama, finally becoming a matron at a field hospital. So high was the regard in which she held that she earned the appellation, 'The Florence Nightingale of the South'. This is a remarkable story in Fannie's own words and was originally published under the title of Memories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In antebellum society, women were regarded as ideal nurses because of their sympathetic natures. However, they were expected to exercise their talents only in the home; nursing strange men in hospitals was considered inappropriate, if not indecent. Nevertheless, in defiance of tradition, Confederate women set up hospitals early in the Civil War and organized volunteers to care for the increasing number of sick and wounded soldiers. As a fledgling government engaged in a long and bloody war, the Confederacy relied on this female labor, which prompted a new understanding of women’s place in public life and a shift in gender roles. Challenging the assumption that Southern women’s contributions to the war effort were less systematic and organized than those of Union women, Worth a Dozen Men looks at the Civil War as a watershed moment for Southern women. Female nurses in the South played a critical role in raising army and civilian morale and reducing mortality rates, thus allowing the South to continue fighting. They embodied a new model of heroic energy and nationalism, and came to be seen as the female equivalent of soldiers. Moreover, nursing provided them with a foundation for pro-Confederate political activity, both during and after the war, when gender roles and race relations underwent dramatic changes. Worth a Dozen Men chronicles the Southern wartime nursing experience, tracking the course of the conflict from the initial burst of Confederate nationalism to the shock and sorrow of losing the war. Through newspapers and official records, as well as letters, diaries, and memoirs—not only those of the remarkable and dedicated women who participated, but also of the doctors with whom they served, their soldier patients, and the patients’ families—a comprehensive picture of what it was like to be a nurse in the South during the Civil War emerges.

Book Memoirs of a Soldier Nurse and Spy

Download or read book Memoirs of a Soldier Nurse and Spy written by Sarah Emma Evelyn Edmonds and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the hundreds of women who, in disguise, enlisted to serve as men during the Civil War, only Sarah Edmonds is known to have written a memoir recounting her experiences. As "Franklin Thompson," she joined the 2nd Michigan Infantry Regiment in 1861, then fought in some of the bloodiest struggles of the Civil War, from the first battle of Bull Run to the Kentucky Campaign of 1863. This daring woman embarked upon dangerous missions into Confederate territory to gather information and to survey enemy positions, sometimes in the guise of a slave or Irish washerwoman, sometimes in Confederate uniform. Through her experiences as a "male nurse" and Union soldier, Edmonds depicts the horrors of Civil War hospitals and the simple pastimes of camp life. Throughout her impassioned account, first published in 1865, this enthralling storyteller reveals her courage, dedication to the Union, and resourcefulness in concealing her identity. Three years after her death, Edmonds's body was reinterred with military honors by her comrades, who recognized in her a "strong, healthy, and robust soldier, ever willing and ready for duty." The introduction and annotations by Elizabeth D. Leonard, a leading authority on Civil War women, support and amplify Edmonds's account. Challenging established views of the Civil War soldier, Memoirs of a Soldier, Nurse, and Spy is compelling reading, especially for those interested in the Civil War, women's history, American studies, and military history.

Book Beyond the Civil War Hospital

Download or read book Beyond the Civil War Hospital written by Kirsten Twelbeck and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Civil War Hospital understands Reconstruction as a period of emotional turmoil that precipitated a struggle for form in cultural production. By treating selected texts from that era as multifaceted contributions to Reconstruction's »mental adaptation process« (Leslie Butler), Kirsten Twelbeck diagnoses individual conflicts between the »heart and the brain« only partly compensated for by a shared concern for national healing. By tracing each text's unique adaptation of the healing trope, she identifies surprising disagreement over racial equality, women's rights, and citizenship. The book pairs female and male white authors from the antislavery North, and brings together a broad range of genres.

Book Nurse and Spy in the Union Army During the American Civil War

Download or read book Nurse and Spy in the Union Army During the American Civil War written by Sarah Emma Evelyn Edmonds and published by Leonaur. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldier, nurse and spy for the Republic This is an extraordinary book by any standards and no short description of it could possibly do justice to its author or her book. Sarah Edmonds was a lady from the northern states of America who, when the great Civil War broke out between the Union and the Confederacy, decided that being 'one who waits' was definitely not her style. Disguised as a man-a talent she had developed since childhood-she successfully enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Regiment and served in several campaigns including the battles at Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg, without ever revealing her gender. In common with many women, from both sides of the conflict, she later performed with distinction as a nurse to wounded troops in the field. Though this was noteworthy and frequently dangerous work it was insufficient for Sarah both as a contribution to the Union war effort and for her own spirit of adventure, so she embarked on a career in the Union Army Secret Service as a spy. This dangerous occupation, where the penalty for detection and capture was summary execution, propelled her into many perilous adventures behind enemy lines, often disguised as a man in a variety of personas including Confederate soldier, negro labourer and Irish tinker. Sarah Edmonds' story is an absolutely gripping personal account of an exceptional woman's experience of war which will fascinate anyone interested in the Civil War and dauntless women in particular. Available in softcover and hard back with dust jacket.
