Book excerpt: This book contains memories of the authors as they lived throughout the 20th century. Life for them started on small Michigan farms that lacked utilities, and ended in a very different modern world. They describe their first experiences with radios, automobiles and airplanes; and their honeymoon trip from Michigan to Washington DC in a Model A Ford at a time before a modern road system existed. The book also contains many poems from their courtship times, as well as stories in verse form that recount the adventures of youth; felling a giant perfectly balanced oak tree, taking a horse and cutter for a winter ice-fishing experience, and other memorable activities of yore.

Book Memories of By Gone Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of By Gone Days Classic Reprint written by W. H. Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of by-Gone Days When my husband asked me to write the foreword to this little book I was glad, for no one except the author can feel so great an interest in this as I do. His articles and pictures for the outdoor magazines have been a pleasure to both of us, and it has long been my desire to see them gathered into a volume in permanent form. In Memories of Bygone Days there is no morbid tendency to disparage present joys, but simply a wholesome retrospect. Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain Our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain. We may make of memory a blessing or a curse, just as we will. It is a stupendous thought that we are augmenting or decreasing future pleasure by the way we spend today. The only use we have for our past is to get a future out of it. All the pleasures of today One by one soon glide away To the golden shore of sweet long ago. Happy is that man whose memories are pleasant and profitable company. Alice kimball steele. Book The Bygone Days

Download or read book The Bygone Days written by Reginald Dutch Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reginald--better known as "Dutch"--Thompson is a multi-faceted storyteller with unforgettable voices--those of Roy from Murray Harbour North, Adelaide from Bunbury, Gus from Chepstow, and countless others--to tell the stories of the Bygone days in Prince Edward Island [sometimes NS, too]. Stories that, without Dutch's talent and care, might be remembered only by family and close friends or lost altogether. Remember when the train ran from tip to tip and along all the small branches, taking goods, people, and baseball teams to other parts of the Island? How about when ice cream and two pieces of cakes cost 10 cents at White's Ice Cream Parlour on Kent Street? When lobster was not the gourmet's delight it is now and the backs were used to fertilize the crops? That butchering the pig before a full moon will mean less fat on the meat? Or that it was bad luck to cut your nails on Sundays. From CBC Radio to the pages of this book, you'll hear Dutch's voice encouraging these informative, illuminating, poignant, and hilarious stories from the minds and hearts of Maritimers born between 1895 and 1925, almost as if they were all still here and telling them to you.

Book excerpt: These days everyone has something to say (or declaim!) about the U.S.–Mexico border. Whether it’s immigration, resource management, educational policy, or drugs, the borderlands are either the epicenter or the emblem of a current crisis facing the nation. At a time when the region has been co-opted for every possible rhetorical use, what endures is a resilient and vibrant local culture that resists easy characterization. For an honest picture of life on the border, what remains is to listen to voices that are too often drowned out: the people who actually live and work there, who make their homes and livings amid a confluence of cultures and loyalties. For many of these people, the border is less a hyphenated place than a meeting place, a merging. This aspect of the border is epitomized in the names of two cities that straddle the line: Calexico and Mexicali. A “sleepy crossroads that exists at a global flashpoint,” Calexico serves as the reference point for veteran journalist Peter Laufer’s chronicle of day-to-day life on the border. This wide-ranging, interview-driven book finds Laufer and travel companion/photographer on a weeklong road trip through the Imperial Valley and other border locales, engaging in earnest and revealing conversations with the people they meet along the way. Laufer talks to secretaries and politicians, restaurateurs and salsa dancers, poets and real estate agents about the issues that matter to them the most. What draws them to border towns? How do they feel about border security and the fences that may someday run through their backyards? Is “English-only” a realistic policy? Why have some towns flourished and others declined? What does it mean to be Mexican or American in such a place? Waitress Bonnie Peterson banters with customers in Spanish and English. Mayor Lewis Pacheco laments the role that globalization has played in his city’s labor market. Some of their anecdotes are humorous, others grim. Moreover, not everyone agrees. But this very diversity is part of the fabric of the borderlands, and these stories demand to be heard.
