Book Memories of Half a Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of Half a Century Classic Reprint written by Richard William Hiley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Half a Century AN old writer, whose manly sentiments and vigorous style of expressing them have ever commanded the respect of Englishmen, devotes many pages to set forth the advantages of a man's writing memoirs of himself.1 The advantage is to accrue from the reflex action of the practice on a man's own life and character. He will trace the effect of the passing events wherein he has been an actor, the conclusions he has deduced, the mistakes he has made, their disturbing effect on his mental peace, and the determinations deduced therefrom as to his future actions and line of conduct. Thus the story of our lives from year to year becomes to the chronicler a useful and instructive monitor and pioneer. It is evident that such memoirs would be intended in the first instance for the writer himself alone. He would never intend to blazon to the world the workings of his own heart and the experiences of his daily life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Two Continents: Memories of Half a Century Who, forsooth, could make a better invention Than a candle that burns without snuffers' attention l So primitive was life then in contrast with the present, when we suffer under the high pressure of a highly com plex existence, that, for instance, on the occasion of a visit which my father paid to the wife of the Cabinet Minister, he found that very aristocratic lady knitting a stocking by the light of a single tallow candle. Combined with this simplicity of living, people were generally en dowed with a Singleness of heart which was more esteemed than material wealth, and a spirit of economy which benefited the ensuing. Generation. But it is not in order to describe these times that I write my reminiscences; it is rather because early in life I came in contact with eminent and distinguished people, of whom I feel impelled to give an account. Book Memories of By Gone Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of By Gone Days Classic Reprint written by W. H. Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of by-Gone Days When my husband asked me to write the foreword to this little book I was glad, for no one except the author can feel so great an interest in this as I do. His articles and pictures for the outdoor magazines have been a pleasure to both of us, and it has long been my desire to see them gathered into a volume in permanent form. In Memories of Bygone Days there is no morbid tendency to disparage present joys, but simply a wholesome retrospect. Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain Our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain. We may make of memory a blessing or a curse, just as we will. It is a stupendous thought that we are augmenting or decreasing future pleasure by the way we spend today. The only use we have for our past is to get a future out of it. All the pleasures of today One by one soon glide away To the golden shore of sweet long ago. Happy is that man whose memories are pleasant and profitable company. Alice kimball steele. Book French Memories of Eighteenth Century America Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Memories of Eighteenth Century America Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Sherrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Memories of Eighteenth-Century America If the reader be not pleased with the following sketch of early American customs, he should blame a certain ancient sofa, and not the author! For it was the said sofa that caused these lines to be written, and it came about in this way: Among some old furniture handed down in our family is an unusually long mahogany sofa, upon which, says tradition, General Lafayette frequently sat when he came to take tea. Tradition further alleged that in the memoirs of some Frenchman (name not given) this fact was set forth at length. Curiosity to read what this unknown had to say upon the subject led through such pleasant literary country that soon the original purpose of the quest gave way to a constantly growing interest in these memoirs and records of the last quarter of the eighteenth century, from the battle of Lexington till the transfer of the Federal Government to the city of Washington. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Yale Life and Men 1845-1899 For the graduates of Yale, whether of the earlier or the later time, the writer hopes that the story may have an interest because it tells somewhat of the growth and progress, during the half-century just ended, of the institution which they love. For others, who as friends of the University are ever ready to rejoice in its well being, he trusts that the book will carry in itself a pleas ant record of the past and a happy prophecy of the future - while to all, wherever they may be, who prize the privilege of the higher education, its pages, if they chance to read them, cannot fail, as he thinks, to bring some word of encouragement that the blessings attend ant upon this privilege will hereafter be yet greater and more widely extended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memory's Harkback: Half-a-Century, 1808 to 1858 It was a grand day with me when I was taken through the great telescope at Slough, had kindly greeting from Sir William Herschel, and a kiss from good Miss Caroline. I think I was rather fiustered than flattered by a condescending pat on the head from Lord Grenville, he looked so grave and grim. But I immensely enjoyed being taken to beautiful Hedsor one Sunday. Lord Boston was my god father, and his silver knife, fork, and spoon are yet daily in my hands. He stands before me now, as he stood then, in white hat, blue coat, nankeen continuations from throat to foot, and, what caught me most, a double gold eye - glass dangling in front of him. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2018 READ RUSSIA PRIZE AND THE PUSHKIN HOUSE BEST BOOK IN TRANSLATION IN 2017 Considered Teffi’s single greatest work, Memories: From Moscow to the Black Sea is a deeply personal account of the author’s last months in Russia and Ukraine, suffused with her acute awareness of the political currents churning around her, many of which have now resurfaced. In 1918, in the immediate aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Teffi, whose stories and journalism had made her a celebrity in Moscow, was invited to read from her work in Ukraine. She accepted the invitation eagerly, though she had every intention of returning home. As it happened, her trip ended four years later in Paris, where she would spend the rest of her life in exile. None of this was foreseeable when she arrived in German-occupied Kiev to discover a hotbed of artistic energy and experimentation. When Kiev fell several months later to Ukrainian nationalists, Teffi fled south to Odessa, then on to the port of Novorossiysk, from which she embarked at last for Constantinople. Danger and death threaten throughout Memories, even as the book displays the brilliant style, keen eye, comic gift, and deep feeling that have made Teffi one of the most beloved of twentieth-century Russian writers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old West Surrey: Some Notes and Memories So many and so great have been the changes within the last half-century, that I have thought it desirable to note, while it may yet be done, what I can remember of the ways and lives and habitations of the older people of the working class of tire country I have lived in almost continuously ever since I was a very young child. It is the south-western corner of the county of Surrey; so near indeed to the actual corner, that the adjoining portions of Hampshire and Sussex come within a radius of a very few miles, and are considered as within the district. After all, geographical distinctions are purely arbitrary, and only really appreciable on the map, whore they show in different colours; whereas, in the real world, one steps without knowing it from Surrey into Hampshire on the dry heath-land, and out of Surrey into Sussex from one clay puddle into the next, without being aware in either case that the land is called by another name. The practical boundaries of our country that we commonly call West Surrey, without any reterence to parliamentary or other authorised divisions, are the long chalk line of the Hog's Back on the north, with its eastern prolongation beyond Guildford, and the Weald of Sussex to the south. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silver Age: And Other Dramatic Memories Where silver mists the hill-tops cloak, Where scents the air the wood-fire's smoke, Where green and white in sunlight's shine The red-roofed house gleams o'er the chine, There 'neath the soundless sky's blue dome, There is rest - there is home. Where hosts of pines 'gainst western sky Uplift their serried spears on high, And through their branches' fret of bars Shine the kind eyes of evening stars, Where glows the sunset's golden foam, There is rest - there is home. The year's brave story, blue and gold, By sun and cloud and greenwood told, Enchants my heart and lifts my mind To dreams of hope that I may find, When spent of strength I no more roam, There my rest - there my home. Companion dear on life's high road, Who shared my pain and sorrow's load, Unfettered from the world's demands, Content we'll wait on love's commands, Where silvered gleams the even's gloam, Where is rest - where is home. Book Remembering War

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. M. Winter
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

Download or read book Remembering War written by J. M. Winter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a masterful volume on remembrance and war in the twentieth century. Jay Winter locates the fascination with the subject of memory within a long-term trajectory that focuses on the Great War. Images, languages, and practices that appeared during and after the two world wars focused on the need to acknowledge the victims of war and shaped the ways in which future conflicts were imagined and remembered. At the core of the "memory boom" is an array of collective meditations on war and the victims of war, Winter says. The book begins by tracing the origins of contemporary interest in memory, then describes practices of remembrance that have linked history and memory, particularly in the first half of the twentieth century. The author also considers "theaters of memory"-film, television, museums, and war crimes trials in which the past is seen through public representations of memories. The book concludes with reflections on the significance of these practices for the cultural history of the twentieth century as a whole.
