Book excerpt: Memories of Baku is the visual retelling of the rich history of the capital of Azerbaijan and the country's rise to power as one of the largest oil producing nations in the world. This publication showcases the unique socio-economic cultural and political situation of Baku in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, presented alongside aspects of Baku culture in the forms of architecture, music, theater and the visual arts. Embellished with photographs, advertisements and postcard views of the once-opulent city, Memories of Baku reaches beyond the classical stereotypes of Azerbaijan as the land of fire, focusing instead on what are considered the more formative elements of Baku's community. The postcard illustrations included in this collection are derived from the personal collection of editor Nicolas V. Iljine, who has developed a passion for discovering and sharing these impressions of an antiquated city with the public.

Book excerpt: Dive into this fun and quirky Urban Fantasy series that draws from Asian mythology! I’m still only a barber to the supernatural, and I still have super weak magic, but I’ve somehow been tasked with essentially saving the world. Yeah, I know. And if I don’t deliver, it’s my neck on the line. So far, it’s not going too well. In fact, it’s not going at all, frankly. I have no idea where to start, no power to make anything happen, and yes, Tim the cat continues to be a sarcastic pain in the ass that’s no help whatsoever. As if I didn’t have enough on my plate, there’s also a weird, recent increase in human suicides that definitely feels like it’s linked to something magical. And then to top it all off, a Mundane holding an amulet manages to enter the barbershop, which should be impossible, given all the spells in place to keep them out. I’m going to need to figure out what’s going on pretty damn quick before the Mayak decide I’m not up to the job and get rid of me. I’m up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle. Grab Bound by Silver to find out if I manage to produce that pesky paddle and live to shave another day. Please note that this is book 2 of a continuous series. Book excerpt: I’ve never been one to stand idly by when a friend’s in trouble. Yes, I know that to go looking into why Ilmu is missing is dangerous. Yue’s still out there, and more to the point she’s not happy with how little progress I’ve made on our deal regarding Sarroch. Which means a significant decrease in the value of my life. Staying home is therefore the smart thing to do. But all the same, a friend in trouble is a friend in trouble, and no one but me seems to care what’s going on with Ilmu. With my limited magic there’s only so much I can do, but I manage to get my hands on magical incense that will allow me to see her. That is until another supernatural creature appears in the smoke and drags me into whatever space Ilmu is trapped in. And just like that, my problems with Yue look pretty insignificant. Perspective, huh? Please note that this is book 5 in a continuous series, and the author recommends that you start with book 1, Touched by Magic.

Book Days in the Caucasus

Download or read book Days in the Caucasus written by Banine and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scintillatingly witty memoir telling the story of a young woman's determined struggle for freedom We all know families that are poor but 'respectable'. Mine, in contrast, was extremely rich but not 'respectable' at all... This is the unforgettable memoir of an 'odd, rich, exotic' childhood, of growing up in Azerbaijan in the turbulent early twentieth century, caught between East and West, tradition and modernity. Banine remembers her luxurious home, with endless feasts of sweets and fruit; her beloved, flaxen-haired German governess; her imperious, swearing, strict Muslim grandmother; her bickering, poker-playing, chain-smoking relatives. She recalls how the Bolsheviks came, and they lost everything. How, amid revolution and bloodshed, she fell passionately in love, only to be forced into marriage with a man she loathed- until the chance of escape arrived. By turns gossipy and romantic, wry and moving, Days in the Caucasus is a coming-of-age story and a portrait of a vanished world. Banine shows us what it means to leave the past behind, and how it haunts us. Banine was born Umm El-Banu Assadullayeva in 1905, into a wealthy family in Baku, then part of the Russian Empire. Following the Russian Revolution and the subsequent fall of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Banine was forced to flee her home-country - first to Istanbul, and then to Paris. In Paris she formed a wide circle of literary acquaintances including Nicos Kazantzakis, André Malraux, Ivan Bunin and Teffi and eventually began writing herself. Days in the Caucasus is Banine's most famous work. It was published in 1945 to critical acclaim but has never been translated into English, until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dive into this fun and quirky Urban Fantasy novel that draws from Asian mythology! If I tell you that I have magic, you’re probably going to expect all kinds of fancy things, like fire balls or maybe some kind of badass demon slaying assassin. Yeah, that’s not me. I’m a barber to the supernatural because my magic is too weak and weird to do anything else. So why have the fae asked me to look after one of their eggs—the most precious thing in the world to a fae—when I’m so vastly under qualified? Either they’ve taken leave of their senses, or they’re seriously desperate. And if the fae are desperate, that means that with my weak magic, I’m utterly out of my depth. Oh, and my backup is a sarcastic cat, which doesn’t come in handy when I find myself facing off against a very old, very powerful magical creature who’s after the egg. The damn cat scampers off and I’m left with nothing more than my piddly magic and my wits to get myself out of this mess. That’s the thing about the magical underworld of Panong—it might be dangerous and complicated, but at least it’s never dull. The Razor’s Edge Chronicles is an Asian Urban Fantasy series drawing inspiration from various Asian myths and featuring all kind of amazing new magical creatures, totally different from anything you’ve encountered so far. Book The Routledge Companion to Migration Literature

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Migration Literature written by Gigi Adair and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Migration Literature offers a comprehensive survey of an increasingly important field. It demonstrates the influence of the “age of migration” on literature and showcases the role of literature in shaping socio-political debates and creating knowledge about the migratory trajectories, lives, and experiences that have shaped the post-1989 world. The contributors examine a broad range of literary texts and critical approaches that cover the spectrum between voluntary and forced migration. In doing so, they reflect the shift in recent years from the author-centric study of migrant writing to a more inclusive conception of migration literature. The book contains sections on key terms and critical approaches in the field; important genres of migration literature; a range of forms and trajectories of migration, with a particular focus on the global South; and on migration literature’s relevance in social contexts outside the academy. Its range of scholarly voices on literature from different geographical contexts and in different languages is central to its call for and contribution to a pluriversal turn in literary migration studies in future scholarship. This Companion will be of particular interest to scholars working on contemporary migration literature, and it also offers an introduction to new students and scholars from other fields. Chapter 15 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Book Khrushchev s Thaw and National Identity in Soviet Azerbaijan 1954 1959

Download or read book Khrushchev s Thaw and National Identity in Soviet Azerbaijan 1954 1959 written by Jamil Hasanli and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 25, 1956, Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev delivered the so-called “secret speech” in the Twentieth Party Congress of the CPSU in which he denounced Stalin’s transgressions and the cult of personality around the deceased dictator. Replete with sharp criticism of the Terror of the late 1930s, the unpreparedness of the USSR for the Nazi invasion, numerous wartime blunders, and the deportation of various nationalities, the speech reverberated throughout the subordinate Soviet republics. For republics such as Azerbaijan, the speech was an unmistakable signal to readjust the entire political orientation and figure out ways to redefine governance in post-Stalin era. Previously frozen under the mortal threat of Stalinist persecution, various forms of national self-expression began to experience rapid revival under the Khrushchev thaw. Encouraged by the winds of change at the Center, the Azeris cautiously began to reclaim possession of their administrative domain. Among other local initiatives, the declaration of the Azerbaijani language as the official language was one step that stood out in its audacity, for it was not pre-arranged with the Kremlin and defied the modus operandi of the Soviet leadership. Somewhat reformist in his intentions yet ignorant of the non-Slavic peripheries, Mr. Khrushchev had not foreseen the scenarios that would unfold as a result of its new tone and the developments that would come to be interpreted as the rise of nationalism in the republics. Jamil Hasanli’s research on 1950s’ Azerbaijan sheds light on this watershed period in Soviet history while also furnishing the reader with a greater understanding of the root causes of the dissolution of the USSR.

Book Knowledge and Acknowledgement in the Politics of Memory of the Armenian Genocide

Download or read book Knowledge and Acknowledgement in the Politics of Memory of the Armenian Genocide written by Vahagn Avedian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Armenian Genocide a strictly historical matter? If that is the case, why is it still a topical issue, capable of causing diplomatic rows and heated debates? The short answer would be that the century old Armenian Genocide is much more than a historical question. It emerged as a political dilemma on the international arena at the San Stefano peace conference in 1878 and has remained as such into our days. The disparity between knowledge and acknowledgement, mainly ascribable to Turkey’s official denial of the genocide, has only heightened the politicization of the Armenian question. Thus, the memories of the WWI era refuse to be relegated to the pages of history but are rather perceived as a vivid presence. This is the result of the perpetual process of politics of memory. The politics of memory is an intricate and interdisciplinary negotiation, engaging many different actors in the society who have access to a wide range of resources and measures in order to achieve their goals. By following the Armenian question during the past century up to its Centennial Commemoration in 2015, this study aims to explain why and how the politics of memory of the Armenian Genocide has kept it as a topical issue in our days.
