Book excerpt: Decentralization and diversity characterized much of the performance of art music in Los Angeles. Decentralization defined the city's growth since the late-nineteenth century, and because the central city did not dominate music culture, as in the East and Midwest, a greater diversification of music emerged in the communities of Greater Los Angeles. Performers and audiencesincluded Latinos, Euro-Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans, but the notion of diversity goes beyond ethnicity; it also includes 'media diversity', the presentation of music through a variety of media. recording, radio, film media strongly influenced music performance in the city as it grew into the epicenter of entertainment in America.

Book The Memory of All Ancient Customs

Download or read book The Memory of All Ancient Customs written by Tom Arne Midtrød and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Memory of All Ancient Customs, Tom Arne Midtrød examines the complex patterns of diplomatic, political, and social communication among the American Indian peoples of the Hudson Valley-including the Mahicans, Wappingers, and Esopus Indians-from the early seventeenth century through the American Revolutionary era. By focusing on how members of different Native groups interacted with one another, this book places Indians rather than Europeans on center stage. Midtrød uncovers a vast and multifaceted Native American world that was largely hidden from the eyes of the Dutch and English colonists who gradually displaced the indigenous peoples of the Hudson Valley. In The Memory of All Ancient Customs he establishes the surprising extent to which numerically small and militarily weak Indian groups continued to understand the world around them in their own terms, and as often engaged- sometimes violently, sometimes cooperatively-with neighboring peoples to the east (New England Indians) and west (the Iroquois ) as with the Dutch and English colonizers. Even as they fell more and more under the domination of powerful outsiders-Iroquois as well as Dutch and English-the Hudson Valley Indians were resilient, maintaining or adapting features of their traditional diplomatic ties until the moment of their final dispossession during the American Revolutionary War.

Book Old Time Student Volunteers

Download or read book Old Time Student Volunteers written by H. Clay Trumbull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Time Student Volunteers: My Memories of Missionaries In order to limit the scope and field of his recorded memories, as distinguished from those with whom young student volunteers and other friends of missions today are personally acquainted, the writer has thought best to give no sketch of any missionary who was not in the mission field at least as early as fifty years ago. In this way his personal memories in the eventide of life may prove of interest and service to those whose recollections do not run back of these better, brighter days in God's providence. Innumerable gardens have been made since the Europeans first came, starting with the Franciscan missionaries. The gold rush was the defining period, leading to immense expenditures by newly rich miners. This book discusses many simple but beautiful gardens created by waves of immigrants. Gardens were necessary for food but also represented repose and leisure. The nature and style of domestic and private gardens shape the landscape of cities and towns just as much as large civic architectural achievements.
