In youth we are looking for the future. At the dawn of our lives, we direct all of our efforts to build a career, a family and a heritage. In fact, a legacy. But as the years went on, we eventually began to look back and try to understand the past to be able to answer a very simple question: How did we get here? And when we think in terms of legacy, we certainly try to fit it into a bigger picture. It's like a relay race, in which we'll try to pass a stick. It would not be for another reason that usually comes from our grandparents the initiative to transmit to the grandchildren the stories and "tales" of our ancestors. Rescuing the family tradition is not a complex task when carried out at the right time, while the memory is still alive. Trying to do the same without a thread of the skein, this is an impossible task. Gathering the available data and finding the beginning of the “trail of the past”, sweat and a good project are able to do the rest. These days, we have powerful allies in technology and internet. We hope that everyone appreciates the result of this project, produced under a collective effort that motivated us a lot. May he achieve his main goals: to honor the memory of our ancestors, to bring his legacy to the knowledge of new generations and to strengthen family ties.

Given that the use of digital media and video recordings in documenting sign languages started only some 30 years ago, the life stories of Deaf elderly signers born in the 1930s-1940s have – except for a few scattered fragments in film – not been documented and are therefore under serious threat of being lost. The chapters compiled in this volume document important aspects of past and present experiences of elderly Deaf signers across Europe, as well as in Israel and the United States. Issues addressed include (i) historical events and how they were experienced by Deaf people, (ii) issues of identity and independence, (iii) aspects of language change, (iv) experiences of suppression and discrimination. The stories shared by elderly signers reveal intriguing, yet hidden, aspects of Deaf life. On the negative side, these include experiences of the Deaf in Nazi Germany and occupied countries and harsh practices in educational settings, to name a few. On the positive side, there are stories of resilience and vivid memories of school years and social and professional life. In this way, the volume contributes in a significant way to the preservation of the cultural and linguistic heritage of Deaf communities and sheds light on lesser known aspects against an otherwise familiar background. This publication has been made possible within the SIGN-HUB project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

No one has been more responsible for the awakening of interest in this area than Roger Schank and Bob Abelson. In their target article, they argue that narrative forms of mental representation, or "stories," are the basic ingredients of social knowledge that play a fundamental role in the comprehension of information conveyed in a social context, the storage of this information in memory, and the later communication of it to others. After explicating the cognitive processes that underlie the construction of narratives and their use in comprehension, memory and communication, the chapter authors consider the influence of stories on a number of more specific phenomena, including political judgment, marital relations and memory distortions that underlie errors in eyewitness testimony. The provocativeness of the target chapter is matched by that of the companion articles, each of which not only provides an important commentary on Schank and Abelson's conceptualization, but also makes an important contribution to knowledge in its own right. The diversity of perspectives reflected in these articles, whose authors include researchers in linguistics, memory and comprehension, social inference, cognitive development, social judgment, close relationships, and social ecology, testifies to the breadth of theoretical and empirical issues to which the target chapter is potentially relevant.
