Imagining Europe and its past in different ways will lead to different real political outcomes. Book excerpt: Don P. Diederich, the eldest child of Bernard and Leona Diederich, was born June 22, 1930, in Barnes, Kansas. In 1932 he moved with his family to a farm located two miles north and 1/2 mile west of Kimeo, Kansas. Don grew up experiencing the harshness of dry weather and the great depression as well as the transition to mechanized farming. Th e Kimeo Catholic Church was the primary center of religious education, recreational activities, and socialization. He cherished the memories of living and growing to young adulthood in the Kimeo community environment. All of his elementary years (grades one through eight) were held in a one-room country school. He attended Greenleaf High School for grades nine through twelve. In May 1952 he graduated from St. Benedict's College with a degree in Business Administration. After a two-year stint in the Army as a Military Pay Specialist, he returned to the farm north of Kimeo in 1954. As a result of tough economic times and dry weather, Don and his new bride, Kathleen, moved to Salina, Kansas, in October 1956 where Don began a long career as a Certifi ed Public Accountant with Kennedy and Coe Certified Public Accountants, retiring in 1992.

Exploring the oral histories of three generations of refugees from India’s Partition—ten Hindu and Sikh families in Delhi, Home, Uprooted melds oral histories with a fresh perspective on current literature to unravel the emergent conceptual nexus of home, travel, and identity in the stories of the participants. Author Devika Chawla argues that the ways in which her participants imagine, recollect, memorialize, or “abandon” home in their everyday narratives give us unique insights into how refugee identities are constituted. These stories reveal how migrations are enacted and what home—in its sense, absence, and presence—can mean for displaced populations. Written in an accessible and experimental style that blends biography, autobiography, essay, and performative writing, Home, Uprooted folds in field narratives with Chawla’s own family history, which was also shaped by the Partition event and her self-propelled migration to North America. Book excerpt: This Report consists of two main parts devoted to Poland’s and Hungary’s remembering of and dealing with the past, including with the use of memory laws and other deployments of legal and extra-legal means in historical policy, including soft law. It also discusses relevant domestic courts’ jurisprudence. The report situates these practices against European human rights law standards, inferred from the ECtHR case law. The aim of this exercise is capturing the dynamics of the Polish and Hungarian state’s relationship to the past after 1989 in a concise form and examine the current legal framework. The Polish and Hungarian sections are structured around common themes. In what follows, we shall discuss mnemonic constitutionalism, the institutionalisation of mnemonic governance, memorialisation of the Second World War and the Holocaust, reckoning with communism, education, and memory. The final part concludes with broader reflections on the state of Polish and Hungarian memocracies, understood as constitutional and political regimes based on references to the past and a specific form of governance of historical memory.
