Book Lodovico Pontano ca 1409 1439

Download or read book Lodovico Pontano ca 1409 1439 written by Thomas Woelki and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short but fiery career of the famous jurist Lodovico Pontano (†1439) led from the universities of Bologna, Florence, Rome and Siena, the Roman curia and the court of Alfonso V of Aragón to the Council of Basel where he became rapidly one of the major conciliarist leaders and died at the age of only 30 years of the plague. Pontano’s biography and the sequential analysis of his largely unedited works shows how a man of learning managed to present his legal skills, later enhanced by persuasive theological arguments, as an expertise indispensable for government and to make himself so essential that he could regularly afford to break his contracts. The first edition of ten important tracts and speeches completes the work.

Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies and published by Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection explore conflict and continuity across the spectrum of political, legal, and spiritual traditions from late medieval Umbria and Tuscany to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Venice, Rome, and Castile. They point to a shared tradition of dispute and resolution in both ecclesiastical/spiritual and state/secular matters, whether of private conscience or public policy. Continuity of ideals, problems, and modes of resolution suggest that breaks in legal, political, or religious ideals and behavior were not as frequent or sharp as historians have argued. These continuities emerge from common methodological approaches grounded in close, careful reading of key texts and their polyvalent terms. Whether those were the terms of civil or canon law, spirituality, or astrology, each author has had to grapple with multiple possibilities, contexts, customs, and practices that reveal the shifts and continuities in their possible meanings. -- Amazon.com.

Book The Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen Immutator Mundi

Download or read book The Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen Immutator Mundi written by Thomas Curtis Van Cleve and published by Oxford : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was designed to explore as fully as possible the appropriateness of the phrase immutator mundi or transformer of the world, as applied by contemporaries to Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, to establish the relationship of his many-sided achievements to those of his Norman and Hohenstaufen antecedents; to describe the circle of associates who participated in his manifold activities; and, finally, to seek the origin and to trace the course of the unremitting hostility of contemporary popes to him and to his concept of empire. The author has critically examined and judiciously employed all available contemporary chronicles, letters, official documents, polemical writings, and all other pertinent materials that either directly or indirectly bear upon the subject. In addition, the book is in no wise concerned with the spiritual motivation of the priesthood.
