Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of the Early Lives and Doings of Great Lawyers Hile engaged in preparing these biographical sketches for the press, I have frequently called to remembrance an evening I spent, many years ago, in company with the eminent and well-known jurist, the late Mr. John Austin. I saw him under very favourable circumstances, when none were present but his intimate friends and connections, and he was drawn into a long and deeply interesting talk. On returning home I took notes of what he had said, and as some of his observations had reference to the subject of juris prudence, I have determined to give them here. Companion of my tender age, Serenely gay and sweetly sage, How blithesome were we wont to rove By verdant hill or shady grove, Where fervent bees, with humming voice, Around the honied oak rejoice, And aged elms, with awful bend, In long cathedral walks extend; Lulled by the lapse of gliding floods, Cheered by the warbling of the woods, How blest my days, my thoughts how free, In sweet society with thee! Then all was joyous, all was young, And years unheeded rolled along. N But now the pleasing dream is o er, These scenes must charm me now no more: Lost to the fields and torn from you, Farewell, a long, a last adieu. Me wrangling courts and stubborn law, To smoke, and crowds, and cities draw; There selfish faction rules the day, And pride and avarice throng the way; Loose revelry and riot bold In frighted streets their orgies hold; Or, where in silence all is drowned, Fell murder walks his nightly round. No room for peace, no room for you, Adieu, celestial nymph, adieu! in. Shakspeare, no more thy sylvan son, Nor all the art of Addison, Pope's heaven-strung lyre, nor Waller's ease, Nor Milton's mighty self must please. Instead of these, a formal band With furs and coifs around me stand, With sounds uncouth and accents dry That grate the soul of harmony. Each pedant sage unlocks his store Of mystic, dark, discordant lore, And points, with tottering hand, the ways That lead me to the thomy maze. Then, welcome business, welcome strife, Welcome the cares, the thorns of life; The visage wan, the pore-blind sight, The toil by day, the lamp at night, The tedious forms, the solemn prate, The pert dispute, the dull debate, The drowsy bench, the babbling hall; For thee, fair Justice, welcome all. Thus let my noon of life be past; Yet, let my...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Allegheny County Bar Association, December 1, 1888: Sketches of Prominent Lawyers of the Allegheny County Bar of the Last Century and Earlier Years of This Of the millions who crowded the earth a century ago, who are now known? Their very names are lost. N oth ing remains, yet the same sun shone on them as brightly, they chased happiness as eagerly, and followed the phantoms of fancy as fondly as we do; and, as we, they thought not of the eeting foot-falls of time and of the coming hours, when all would be forgotten and not even a rack of memory be left behind. Such is the work I am called to perform, in raking among the ashes of the dead past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was admitted to the bar of Orleans County in 1827, and practiced at Derby eight years, the last three of which he was States Attorney of the county. Download or read book Great American Lawyers Vol 1 written by William Draper Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Lawyers, Vol. 1: The Lives and Influence of Judges and Lawyers Who Have Acquired Permanent National Reputation, and Have Developed the Jurisprudence of the United States, a History of the Legal Profession in America The aim of this work is not to present a mere collection of biographical sketches of great American judges and lawyers of the past, but to give a history of the development of legal institutions and an insight into social and political conditions existing in different parts of the country at practically every period of our colonial and national progress. It is hoped that taken separately each article will be found to give an account of the person written about sufficiently full to enable the reader to grasp his personality, a picture of the times in which he lived and the nature and character of his legal services. The history of America, especially at critical periods, is so bound up with the personality of the leading members of the Bar, that a coherent series of monographs on the great judges and lawyers of the past will have an interest and value to every student of our history. To the educated lawyer the lives of those who in the past have reached a great place in the profession, enriching it, not only by their learning in the law, but by the bright example of their professional conduct, must always be a source of interest and inspiration.
