Every Rector of an ancient English Parish owes a debt to his Parish to preserve its memorials from being forgotten, and I hereby endeavour to discharge my debt to Rotherhithe. I could not have discharged it in any satisfactory degree, had I not availed myself of the help of many friends, which I hereby gratefully acknowledge. Besides drawing on the ordinary sources of information which are open to all in the great Histories of the County of Surrey and of London, I have invoked the kind assistance of many friends whose personal recollections of by-gone days are incorporated in the following pages; and of these I now gratefully mention, first and foremost, my old Cambridge friend, Dr Bonney, whose chapter on the Geology of the Thames Valley is a most valuable contribution to the pre-historic era of our ancient Parish; next the Reverend Prebendary Wm.
