He must not expect everything that falls under the head of Memorials Of Old Shropshire; but if he has the patience to read the volume through, I venture to think he will be in possession of a fairly clear idea of the past history of the county, viewed under several aspects. In the chapters written by myself, and in those contributed by others, I have alike endeavoured to avoid the scrappiness which is too apt to attach to a volume like the present. When one knows a county well, there is always the temptation to trot out some particular hobby-horse, or even a whole team of them; in other words, to give exaggerated prominence to some particular place, or person, or family, which may be of great interest to the writer himself or to a few local antiquaries, but is of very little value to the general reader.
