It has, indeed, been planned upon entirely other lines, the central idea of which is to endeavour to present a series of vivid word-pictures descriptive of the most striking and most picturesque events in Hertfordshire's chequered story. If the Editor has been partially successful in executing the plan adopted, he is content. To this end, a number of well-known and approved specialists on the various subjects have co-operated to produce a volume of "Memorials" not unworthy, it is hoped, to be considered as an important contribution to the annals of our counties. At the same time, an endeavour has been made to preserve, as far as possible, the due order of sequence of the different chapters, so that a certain continuity of epoch or period might be observed throughout. The Editor desires to express his grateful thanks to his many able contributors for their generous collaboration, and feels sure that the results of their painstaking research and the literary excellence of their writings will not fail to be appreciated by the public, and especially by the lovers of Old Hertfordshire.
