Book excerpt: Dr Jonathan Foyle traces the importance of St John as both the founder and inspiration for the continuing development of Beverley Minster, one of the most spectacular and impressive of English non-cathedral churches. Beverley Minster is one of the most spectacular and impressive of English non-cathedral churches. It owes its origins to the Saxon St John of Beverley, who is buried here, though most of what we see today dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, when Beverley was one of the largest and wealthiest towns in England and the Minster was a major pilgrimage centre. Despite a long building programme, the church was constructed in a consistent architectural style which gives the interior, in particular, a pleasing harmony. Dr Foyle traces the importance of St John as both the founder and the inspiration for the continuing development of the Minster, and the book is lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned photography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking about church architecture has come to an impasse. Reformers and traditionalists are talking past each other. Statements from both sides are often strident and dogmatic. In Theology in Stone, Richard Kieckhefer seeks to help both sides move beyond the standoff toward a fruitful conversation about houses of worship. Drawing on a wide range of historical examples with an eye to their contemporary relevance, he offers new ideas about the meanings and uses of church architecture.

Book The History of Alfred of Beverley

Download or read book The History of Alfred of Beverley written by John Slevin and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first modern edition of a text which shows the suspicion with which Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain was received two decades after it first appeared. The history of the Yorkshire secular clerk, Alfred of Beverley (c.1148 x c.1151), an important primary source in Anglo-Norman historiography, supplies a history of Britain from its supposed foundation by Brutus down to the death of Henry I in 1135.Alfred's history is of particular interest in that it is the first Insular Latin chronicle to incorporate the legendary British history of Geoffrey of Monmouth (published c.mid 1130s) within a continuous account of the island's past. In attempting to fuse the radically new Galfridian account of the past with that of the conventional twelfth-century (Bedan) view, Alfred's use and manipulation of his sources is highly revealing and suggests a quite critical reception of Geoffrey's history, a mindset which by the end of the twelfth century appears almost entirely to have disappeared amongst chroniclers. Alfred's history is also an important, and presently undervalued, witness to the reception and dissemination of three of the most important Anglo-Norman histories: Symeon of Durham Historia Regum, The Chronicle of John of Worcester and Henry of Huntingdon, Historia Anglorum, from which works it borrows extensively. In the manner of use of these sources, the author tells us much about the ecclesiastical and intellectual interests and outlook of the period.

Book English Episcopal Acta 27 York 1189 1212

Download or read book English Episcopal Acta 27 York 1189 1212 written by David Michael Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey, the illegitimate son of Henry II, was successively archdeacon and bishop-elect of Lincoln, royal chancellor, and (for 23 years) archbishop of York, finally dying in exile during the Interdict following his opposition to John's imposition of the 13th. His enduring loyalty to his father, which inspired the subsequent mistrust of his royal half brothers after Henry's death, placed him at the very centre of late twelfth and early thirteenth century politics, especially during John's rebellion during the early years of the Third crusade. Moreover, during most of his time as archbishop his turbulent personality brought him into direct opposition to his cathedral chapter at York, which in turn throws further light on the ecclesiastical politics of the period. He also endured two long periods of exile, and he remains one of the very few bishops in the medieval English church for whom even a partial contemporary biography survives. This edition collects together for the first time Geoffrey's acta as archbishop, and Dr Lovatt's introduction provides a much needed modern account of this intriguing character.

Book The Register of William Melton Archbishop of York 1317 1340

Download or read book The Register of William Melton Archbishop of York 1317 1340 written by Catholic Church. Province of York (England). Archbishop (1317-1340 : Melton) and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1977 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, continuing the series of great medieval bishops' registers, offers material valuable for both religious and social history. The register of Archbishop William Melton is one of the largest and most comprehensive to survive. Its backbone is the institution of clergy and licences to them, papal provisions and ordination of vicars and chantries, but it also contains a wealth of material for social history. During the period it covers, the East Riding of Yorkshire was flourishing, and a number of entries in the register reflect the challenges which the newly-founded town of Kingstonupon Hull was causing for the existing parochial structure. The archbishop is shown anathematizing malefactors who stole his swans and invaded his liberties in Beverley and the river Hull, and demanding the return of stolen woolon behalf of a merchant whose ship had been wrecked in the river Humber. The register also covers the origins of one of the last monasteries to be founded in medieval England, Haltemprice, and reveals the shortcomings of monks andnuns as well as secular clergy and members of the laity; more widely, many entries reflect the tensions between outlying vills and chapelries and their mother churches. The text is presented here with introduction, apparatus, and notes which elucidate the entries. David Robinson, until his retirement County Archivist of Surrey, was awarded his PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Book Illuminated History Books in the Anglo Norman World 1066 1272

Download or read book Illuminated History Books in the Anglo Norman World 1066 1272 written by Laura Cleaver and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, texts about the recent and more distant past were produced in remarkable numbers in the lands controlled by the kings of England. This may be seen, in part, as a response to changing social and political circumstances in the wake of the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The names of many of the twelfth and thirteenth-century historians are well known, and they include Orderic Vitalis, William of Malmesbury, John of Worcester, Henry of Huntingdon, Gerald of Wales, and Matthew Paris. Yet the manuscripts in which these works survive are also evidence for the involvement of many other people in the production of history, as patrons, scribes, and artists. Illuminated History Books in the Anglo-Norman World focuses on history books of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to examine what they reveal about the creation, circulation, and reception of history in this period. In particular, this research concentrates on illuminated manuscripts. These volumes represent an additional investment of time, labour, and resources, and combinations of text and imagery shed light on engagements with the past as manuscripts were copied at specific times and places. Imagery could be used to reproduce the features of older sources, but it was also used to call attention to particular elements of a text, and to impose frameworks onto the past. As a result, Illuminated History Books in the Anglo-Norman World has the potential to change the way in which we see the medieval past and its historians.
