Book Deacon King Kong Oprah s Book Club

Download or read book Deacon King Kong Oprah s Book Club written by James McBride and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction Winner of the Gotham Book Prize One of Barack Obama's "Favorite Books of the Year" Oprah's Book Club Pick Named one of the Top Ten Books of the Year by the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and TIME Magazine A Washington Post Notable Novel From the author of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird, and the bestselling modern classic The Color of Water, comes one of the most celebrated novels of the year. In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project’s drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride’s funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird. In Deacon King Kong, McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood’s Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself. As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters—caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York—overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion. Bringing to these pages both his masterly storytelling skills and his abiding faith in humanity, James McBride has written a novel every bit as involving as The Good Lord Bird and as emotionally honest as The Color of Water. Told with insight and wit, Deacon King Kong demonstrates that love and faith live in all of us.

Book Memorials of St Ann s Church Manchester in the Last Century

Download or read book Memorials of St Ann s Church Manchester in the Last Century written by Charles Wareing E. Bardsley and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1877 edition. Excerpt: ...is remarkable that we have to go to John Byrom's library for so much that his foes wrote and made public. On the 26th February, 1753, just a year after Dr. Peploe's death, Dr. Deacon was buried at St. Ann's, and for all I can find to the contrary, the service was read by Mr. Ward. Such an inconsistency would be remarkable, were it not so easily explained, as we shall show by and by. It is because Dr. Deacon's tomb, raised at the north-east corner of the churchyard, and thus made more prominent than any other grave in Manchester, has helped to give St. Ann's the character of a "famous non-juring church," that we must say a few words about this extraordinary man. No two men in the whole town could be more unlike than these two, Archdeacon Ward and Dr. Thomas Deacon. They were both uncompromisingly resolute, but each in a different cause. Far as the poles asunder were their thoughts and aims. Their churches were near, for Dr. Deacon held forth in an upper room in Fennell-street, but the discourses delivered must have been at conflict indeed. Many of the nonjurors were quite ready to swear to the creeds and the formularies of the English Church, but there the Doctor was even at feud with his own party. He believed in no creed but that he had formulated, would worship in no church but his own, and was firmly convinced there was only one true bishop in Europe--namely himself. The British Catholic Church--with Dr. Deacon for its diocesan, and its cathedral over the shop in Fennellstreet, disagreed with Greek, Roman, and Anglican, on grounds too many for enumeration. Alliance with Dissent was impossible for their lack of episcopacy. All had departed from the primitive Apostolic Church. Dr. Deacon had no less than twelve sacraments--the...
