  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Coastal Heroes written by Miles O. Hayes and published by Pandion Books. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of this book is to present the significant aspects of how coastlines evolve, stressing some original ideas regarding the origin and morphology of the coastlines of the world that my students, co-workers, and I have made over the years. Our chosen profession is coastal geo-morphology, or, as some prefer to say, coastal geology. Also, with most of the ideas or projects presented in the different chapters, side stories are told to present the history of their development, as well as an introduction to the reader of the diverse and unforgettable people - scientists, students, and otherwise - involved. I have been lucky enough to experience a scientific career that has lasted over 50 years, involving field projects on all the major continents except Australia. I also have conducted studies near the magnetic north pole and the south pole, and along the entire coastline of Alaska. In addition to those areas, most of the shoreline of the Arabian Peninsula, the coast of West Africa, and many other areas (in 42 countries and still counting) have been investigated.

Book New Developments in Engineering Education for Sustainable Development

Download or read book New Developments in Engineering Education for Sustainable Development written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses essential approaches and methods in connection with engineering education for sustainable development. Prepared as a follow-up to the 2015 Engineering Education in Sustainable Development (EESD) Conference held in British Columbia, Canada, it offers the engineering community key information on the latest trends and developments in this important field. Reflecting the need to address the links between formal and informal education, the scholars and professionals who contribute to this book show by means of case studies and projects how the goal of fostering sustainable development in the context of engineering education can be achieved. In particular, they discuss the need for restructuring teaching at engineering‐focused institutions of higher education and provide practical examples of how to do so. The book places special emphasis on state-of-the art descriptions of approaches, methods, initiatives and projects from around the world, illustrating the contribution of engineering and affiliated sciences to sustainable development in various contexts, and at an international scale.

Book excerpt: Gunter Rochow (BA, BD, MA) and Reinhilde Rochow (RN, BA) reflect on a lifetime of education, work and play that, to date, spans 91 countries. This volume takes you on a tour of the world as seen through the authors’ eyes, not sorted chronologically, but rather organized by various themes. Born in Germany shortly before the Second World War, the authors were strongly influenced by the hardships of war and the rich opportunities offered in their chosen new home in Canada. Professionally, the authors have worked in the Baptist ministry, the public sector, and private enterprise. They have also participated in the ministry of several other Christian denominations, and they have related with respect and appreciation to people of other religious and cultural backgrounds. Their focus has been action-oriented, seeking not only their own benefit, but also that of others. While this book is dedicated to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, it will also be of interest to anybody who seeks to strengthen families and communities in an increasingly uncertain world. It is in this spirit that the authors share not only what they have done, but also what they have learned while doing it.

Book The Power of the Periphery

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peder Anker
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2020-05-28
  • ISBN : 1108801498
  • Pages : 303 pages

Download or read book The Power of the Periphery written by Peder Anker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the source of Norway's culture of environmental harmony in our troubled world? Exploring the role of Norwegian scholar-activists of the late twentieth century, Peder Anker examines how they portrayed their country as a place of environmental stability in a world filled with tension. In contrast with societies dirtied by the hot and cold wars of the twentieth century, Norway's power, they argued, lay in the pristine, ideal natural environment of the periphery. Globally, a beautiful Norway came to be contrasted with a polluted world and fashioned as an ecological microcosm for the creation of a better global macrocosm. In this innovative, interdisciplinary history, Anker explores the ways in which ecological concerns were imported via Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962, then to be exported from Norway back to the world at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
