Book Celebrating a Life

Download or read book Celebrating a Life written by Faith Moore and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide of alternatives to traditional funerals, commemorating lost loved ones in a meaningful, personal way. Today, many people are forgoing the trappings and timeworn rituals of typical funerals, and are instead opting to celebrate their loved ones’ lives. With careful planning, services like these can truly honor the person who has died—and both comfort and uplift those who attend. Celebrating a Life offers sensitive guidance on every detail—venue, food and drink, music, flowers, eulogy, program, mementoes—all with the aim of making sure the memorial service’s honoree is remembered just as he or she would have wished. Checklists and an extensive resource directory provide much-needed help to those who have very little time to make arrangements. As author Faith Moore says, this book is not about regrets, but about reimagining how we say good-bye. “In a caring, practical, and authoritative way, Faith Moore tackles a very difficult topic. Her direct and warm advice is a fabulous resource. This book is a must-read for anyone who will face the inevitability of honoring and celebrating the life of a deceased love one.” —Peggy Post, director of the Emily Post Institute and author of Emily Post’s Etiquette, 17th Edition

Book Memorial Services of Commemoration Day

Download or read book Memorial Services of Commemoration Day written by Grand Army of the Republic Dept Post and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Services of Commemoration Day: Held in Canton, May 30, 1877, Under the Auspices of Revere Encampment, Post 94, Grand Army of the Republic For many years our town has been marvellously attentive to the solicitations of business, and amid the clanging of hammer and the whir of machinery, we have been unfaithful, to the mem ory ofa soldier of other days, one who acted valiantly his part, and filled with lustre his day and generation. In the discharge of the imperative duties of to-day, we have little inclination to peer into the twilight of yesterday. Our recollection of events that happened years ago is faint and intermitting, and we are apt to forget those who crowded the walks of life in the dim past, who were our benefactors, and to whose fame and glory we are joint heirs. And to-day, at the eleventh hour, we come together to contemplate the life and deeds of one whose work was finished long ago, and whose face none of us in Canton, save one, have ever seen. About the year 1630, three brothers, bearing the names of Richard, Samuel, and Thomas Gridley, arrived in America. It is probable that they came from the County of Essex in Old Eng land. Soon after reaching these shores Samuel died. Thomas went to Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, where he died, leaving a numerous posterity. Book Commemorative Events

Download or read book Commemorative Events written by Warwick Frost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorative Events emphasise remembering. They are held on the anniversaries of significant past events, either annually or after significant time periods. Commemorative events provide fascinating insight into how societies see themselves, their heritage and their identity. These events however carry high propensity for controversy as memory and identity are highly subjective and other stakeholders hold different views of what should be commemorated and why. This is the first book to provide an in - depth critical examination of commemorative events, particularly what they mean to societies and how they are used by governments as well as impacts on other stakeholders. The book fully explores these issues by reviewing all the major types of commemorative events including, nationhood or independence, wars, battles, famous people and cultural milestones from varying geographical regions and stakeholder perspectives. By doing so the book furthers understanding of these types of events in society as well as furthering knowledge of social and political uses and impacts of events. This thought provoking volume will be valuable reading for students, researchers and academics interested in events.

Book Forgiveness and Remembrance

Download or read book Forgiveness and Remembrance written by Jeffrey M. Blustein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgiveness and Remembrance examines the complex moral psychology of forgiving, remembering, and forgetting in personal and political contexts. It challenges a number of entrenched ideas that pervade standard philosophical approaches to interpersonal forgiveness and offers an original account of its moral psychology and the emotions involved in it. The volume also uses this account to illuminate the relationship of forgiveness to political reconciliation and restorative political practices in post-conflict societies. Memory is another central concern that flows from this, since forgiveness is tied to memory and to emotions associated with the memory of injury and injustice. In its political function, memory of wrongdoing -- and of its victims -- is embodied in processes of memorialization, such as the creation of monuments, commemorative ceremonies, and museums. The book casts light on the underexplored relationship of memorialization to transitional justice and politically consequential interpersonal forgiveness. It examines the symbolism and the symbolic moral significance of memorialization as a political practice, reflects on its relationship to forgiveness, and, finally, argues that there are moral responsibilities associated with memorialization that belong to international actors as well as to states.

Download or read book The Romance of Reunion written by Nina Silber and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconciliation of North and South following the Civil War depended as much on cultural imagination as on the politics of Reconstruction. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Nina Silber documents the transformation from hostile sectionalism to sentimental reunion rhetoric. Northern culture created a notion of reconciliation that romanticized and feminized southern society. In tourist accounts, novels, minstrel shows, and popular magazines, northerners contributed to a mythic and nostalgic picture of the South that served to counter their anxieties regarding the breakdown of class and gender roles in Gilded Age America. Indeed, for many Yankees, the ultimate symbol of the reunion process, and one that served to reinforce Victorian values as well as northern hegemony, was the marriage of a northern man and a southern woman. Southern men also were represented as affirming traditional gender roles. As northern men wrestled with their nation's increasingly global and aggressive foreign policy, the military virtues extolled in Confederate legend became more admired than reviled. By the 1890s, concludes Silber, northern whites had accepted not only a newly resplendent image of Dixie but also a sentimentalized view of postwar reunion.
