Book excerpt: "A wonderful introduction the Japanese tradition of jisei, this volume is crammed with exquisite, spontaneous verse and pithy, often hilarious, descriptions of the eccentric and committed monastics who wrote the poems." --Tricycle: The Buddhist Review Although the consciousness of death is, in most cultures, very much a part of life, this is perhaps nowhere more true than in Japan, where the approach of death has given rise to a centuries-old tradition of writing jisei, or the "death poem." Such a poem is often written in the very last moments of the poet's life. Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet's death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time. Yoel Hoffmann explores the attitudes and customs surrounding death in historical and present-day Japan and gives examples of how these have been reflected in the nation's literature in general. The development of writing jisei is then examined--from the longing poems of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries. Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.

Book Funeral and Memorial Service Readings Poems and Tributes

Download or read book Funeral and Memorial Service Readings Poems and Tributes written by Rachel R. Baum and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-11-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words can fail even the most articulate when called upon to speak at a loved one's funeral or memorial occasion. The bereaved desires to say something meaningful, yet services are often held so quickly that there is little time to find something appropriate at the library or bookstore. This book is a collection of poetry and prose appropriate for reading at a funeral or memorial service. To assist the reader in finding a suitable passage, the book is divided into eleven chapters. There are tributes for mothers; fathers; children; spouses and soulmates; friends; siblings and other close relatives; soldiers and victims of war or violence; pets; and general readings appropriate for men, women, or any loved one. These selections will also prove helpful for clergy, counselors, and hospice, hospital, and funeral professionals. Appendices list resources and support organizations, and each selection is indexed by author, title, and first line. A special additional index references pieces by famous uses, such as in a film, novel, or celebrity's funeral, so readers can locate a passage they remember from its context.

Book excerpt: Mary Oliver, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, celebrates love in her new collection of poems "If I have any secret stash of poems, anywhere, it might be about love, not anger," Mary Oliver once said in an interview. Finally, in her stunning new collection, Felicity, we can immerse ourselves in Oliver’s love poems. Here, great happiness abounds. Our most delicate chronicler of physical landscape, Oliver has described her work as loving the world. With Felicity she examines what it means to love another person. She opens our eyes again to the territory within our own hearts; to the wild and to the quiet. In these poems, she describes—with joy—the strangeness and wonder of human connection. As in Blue Horses, Dog Songs, and A Thousand Mornings, with Felicity Oliver honors love, life, and beauty.

Book The Nonconformist s Memorial

Download or read book The Nonconformist s Memorial written by Susan Howe and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nonconformist's Memorial is a gathering of four long sequences that underscores Susan Howe's reputation as one of the leading experimentalists writing today. Howe is a poet of language in history whose work resonates back through Melville, Dickinson, and Shelley to the seventeenth-century Metaphysicals and Puritans (the nonconformism of the title), and forward again to T.S. Eliot and the abstract expressionists. The sequences fall into two sections, "Turning" and "Conversion", in half-ironic nonconforming counterpoint to Eliot's Four Quartets. Her collaging and mirror-imaging of words are concretions of verbal static, visual meditations on what can and cannot be said. For Howe, "Melville's Marginalia" is the essential poem in the collection, an approach to an elusive and allusive mind through Melville's own reading and the notations in his library books. This, says Howe, is "Language a wood for thought".

Book Grief and Horses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick Daly
  • Publisher : Broadstone Books
  • Release : 2021-11-05
  • ISBN : 9781937968953
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Grief and Horses written by Patrick Daly and published by Broadstone Books. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrick Daly indeed writes of both grief and horses (among other animals, all sources of wisdom), but his deeply empathetic poems cover the full range of emotion to arrive at hope. There is grief, to be sure, in Patrick Daly's new poetry collection, especially associated with the madness of war and its aftermath. And horses, yes, along with many other animals, all with wisdom to offer. But most of all there is language, the love of it and the skillful use of it, as in the opening poem "Words" in which he wishes to learn the language of trees, "But the words of trees / are so large we cannot hear them." Perhaps not, but in Daly's poetry, we nevertheless can sense that wider world. Writing in the foreword to the book, J. David Cummings observes that "Empathy is the rich center of all the poems in this book," the "hidden alchemy" by which Daly works this wonder, such that in the end it is not grief that we take away from these poems, but hope. Poetry. Literary Nonfiction.
