Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Celebration of the Centenary of Savings Banks: Held at Edinburgh, 8th, 9th and 10th, June 1910 It has been generally admitted by those concerned that it was a happy thought which recognised in the Centenary of the establishment of Savings Banks an event of outstanding importance to all interested in the progress of thrift, and foresaw in it an opportunity, unique as it was rare, for furthering the cause of thrift not only in the United Kingdom but throughout the world. It matters not now to whom the happy thought, or inspiration, originally occurred. The first time it found expression was at the Annual Meeting of the Trustee Savings Banks Association which was held at Chester in June 1908, when the proposal to celebrate the Centenary in 1910 was received with unanimous approval. Since then the proposal gradually took form in the minds of those more especially concerned with the event, viz., the Association referred to and the Committee of Management of the Edinburgh Savings Bank, since from the outset the capital city was selected as being the most appropriate and convenient place in which to hold any Centenary celebrations that might be subsequently arranged.
