Book Monumental Brasses in the Bedfordshire Churches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Monumental Brasses in the Bedfordshire Churches Classic Reprint written by Grace Isherwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monumental Brasses in the Bedfordshire Churches Before commencing on the subject of the various brasses in the Bedfordshire churches, may I say a few words about the material of which brasses are composed? The metal consists of a mixture of copper, zinc, lead, and tin, and is called 'laton.' Some of the districts where it was engraved in England were Norwich, Ipswich, and Bristol. When the brass was completed ready for fixing into the floor, it was handed over to a mason, often an illiterate man, who could not read nor write; consequently mishaps occurred, as, for example, some of the brasses being placed upside down, because of his inability to read what was written thereon. The earlier the date of the brasses, the better is the material and more accurate the workmanship. After the fourteenth century brasses deteriorated as to their cutting - in fact, in some of the later brasses the features, etc., are so badly cut that a good rubbing cannot be obtained from them. After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. very many of our brasses were destroyed; even in the following reign the brasses suffered severely. Book The Monumental Brasses of Gloucestershire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Monumental Brasses of Gloucestershire Classic Reprint written by Cecil T. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monumental Brasses of Gloucestershire Scattered over the county of Gloucester, sometimes in out-of-the-way places, are still to be found a goodly number of those very interesting memorials called Monumental Brasses. These brasses are worthy of more than a passing notice, they furnish us with information most valuable to the historian, both general and local, and give many details of much importance to the herald, genealogist and antiquary. To the general reader they are equally interesting, since they are richly suggestive, and full of the touching pathos of the past. They clearly mark the successive steps of our nations progress - they tell of those stern and terrible times of strife and glory through which England has passed - they bear silent witness to those grand and far-reaching changes which have made our country what it is - and they give an insight into the currents of thought and feeling which deeply moved our forefathers. Gloucestershire contains more than eighty of these incised memorials, embracing a period of several centuries. In one place we have the valorous knight clad in glittering coat of steel - in another a tonsured ecclesiastic in vestments rich and elaborate - then the gentlewoman in the costume peculiar to her time - but whether knight, or priest, or lady fair, each is of importance in giving with remarkable fidelity a life-like picture of the military, sacerdotal, and domestic life of bygone times. One cannot but deeply regret that these unobtrusive memorials have suffered much mutilation and spoliation at the hands of the thief and the religious fanatic, as well as from the culpable neglect of their lawful custodians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monumental Brasses of England: A Series of Engravings Upon Wood From Every Variety of These Interesting and Valuable Memorials, Accompanied With Brief Descriptive Notices The almost exclusively national character of Monumental Brasses in England, and the general recognition of their high value and interest, appeared to require the production of some work which would comprise a numerous and diversified series of examples of these memorials, and which, at the same time, from its moderate cost, might be available to every class of archaeological enquirers. Book excerpt: Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) was one of the last of the great Gothic Revival architects, his work concentrating on churches and their contents. He is well-known for his stained glass, his use of colour, and his subtle integration of Classical and Gothic styles. Anthony Symondson, the leading authority on Comper, describes how and why Comper developed his distinctive approach, using early photographs to show Comper's work in its original form. He also charts Comper's friendship with Sir John Betjeman, who championed his work with mixed results. There is a complete gazetteer by Stephen Bucknall, who knew Comper through his family's professional connections, and a reprint of Comper's essay, Of the Atmosphere of a Church . Overall the book gives unique insight into the late flowering of English Gothic Revival church architecture.

Book Broken Idols of the English Reformation

Download or read book Broken Idols of the English Reformation written by Margaret Aston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were so many religious images and objects broken and damaged in the course of the Reformation? Margaret Aston's magisterial new book charts the conflicting imperatives of destruction and rebuilding throughout the English Reformation from the desecration of images, rails and screens to bells, organs and stained glass windows. She explores the motivations of those who smashed images of the crucifixion in stained glass windows and who pulled down crosses and defaced symbols of the Trinity. She shows that destruction was part of a methodology of religious revolution designed to change people as well as places and to forge in the long term new generations of new believers. Beyond blanked walls and whited windows were beliefs and minds impregnated by new modes of religious learning. Idol-breaking with its emphasis on the treacheries of images fundamentally transformed not only Anglican ways of worship but also of seeing, hearing and remembering.
