This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish community had a long history in Bolekhov. In 1612 the Jews of Bolekhov were allowed to vote in the local elections. Jews in the 18th century were active in the various trades and crafts including timber, tanneries, furniture and soap. The town was known as the center of Jewish Enlightenment in eastern Galicia. There were about 3000 Jews living in the town in 1931. The Nazis invaded the town on July 2, 1941, which started the eventual elimination of this long established Jewish community. In spring of 1944, when the Soviets finally took control of the region, only a few Jews remained alive. Thus ended the Jewish community of Bolekhov. This book serves to commemorate the once vital community that no longer exists. Book The Jewish Martyrs of Rhodes and Cos

Download or read book The Jewish Martyrs of Rhodes and Cos written by Hizkia M. Franco and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franco was born in 1875 in Rhodes and died in 1953 in Rhodesia; he wrote these memoirs in 1947, in French, and published them in the Belgian Congo in 1952. He served as president of the Jewish community of Rhodes and Cos between 1925-36. The memoirs describe events in the community between 1936-44. The first signs of trouble for the Jews in these Italian-controlled territories appeared in 1936. In September 1938 the racial laws against the Jews were promulgated in Italy, including restrictions on the Jews of the islands, and rescinding of their Italian citizenship; these were followed by an order of expulsion. Franco travelled to Italy and then to France, where he appealed to the Alliance Israélite Universelle to assist in having the order revoked. It was revoked, but between 1938-43 ca. 2,250 Jews emigrated. There were 1,767 Jews in the islands when the Germans occupied them in September 1943. In July 1944 most of the Jews were deported to Auschwitz or for forced labor. Only 151 survived. Pp. 72-118 contain lists of the Jews of Rhodes and Cos at the time of the German occupation, including those murdered by the Nazis and those who survived.

Book excerpt: Sochaczew, located in central Poland is a town about 44 miles due west of Warsaw, whose Jewish presence dates back to the 15th century. The first reported Jew in town was in 1463 - a doctor. Life was not easy for the Jews due to an alleged "blood libel" in the mid- 16th century, and the rabbi was punished with a death penalty, along with several other inhabitants. In the 19th century the Jewish community grew. Sochaczew became a great Hasidic center, first led by Tzaddik Abraham Bornsztajn. In the later part of the 19th century reconstruction of the synagogue began after the previous one was burned down. Being on the road between Berlin and Warsaw many of the Jews fled during World War I. There were several town "personalities" such as Chaikel the Wagon Driver that were written about in addition the many rabbis. There were workers' movements and professional unions as well as a Bund and Communist Circle. Memories of some of the survivors are related in the book. The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis when they entered the town in September 1939, and the town was destroyed during World War ll. Many of the Jews ended up in the Warsaw ghetto and some ended up in the Skarzyko Work Camp. 4,000 Jews lived in the town at the start of the war. Few survived. Today, there are no Jews in the town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road from Letichev presents the history of the area through the eyes of individuals who lived there. The Letichev District (Podolia) of Ukraine was a microcosm of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. It was the home of the Baal Shem Tov and the cradle of the Chasidic movement. This book is, in part, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of his birth. The book’s purpose is to document what was destroyed in the Holocaust. Although the Soviet experience in the Holocaust is relatively rare in modern literature, no understanding of the Holocaust is truly complete without an understanding of what the Nazis took away from the world. Through the testimonials from survivors of the Holocaust we learn new information about the horrors of the Nazi occupation on Soviet soil. Richly illustrated, more than 8300 individuals are indexed, including more than 600 unique Jewish surnames from Letichev District. The first of its kind, it provides a complete encyclopedia of the rabbis who traveled The Road from Letichev, plus a detailed description of synagogues (most of which are now destroyed). Interwoven into the fabric of Jewish life are songs, food, folklore, health, education and crime. The best description of a Jewish agricultural colony to date is detailed. On a tragic note, new information is provided on the 1648 Khmelnitsky massacres, as well as the pogroms of 1882, 1903-7, and 1919-21.

Book excerpt: In 1940 about 140,000 Jews lived in the Netherlands. 80,000 of them lived in Amsterdam, about ten percent of the city's total population. More than 75 percent of them have been deported to concentration and extermination camps and killed there. In Amsterdam alone, more than eighty monuments have been established that have something to do with the persecution. In addition, there are many locations that tell a part of the story of the persecution of the Jews: buildings, squares and streets that were once the silent witnesses of the darkest page in the history of the city. In 95 short stories it becomes clear how inextricably the city of Amsterdam is still connected with the history of the persecution of its Jews. August 26, 1945: Lotty Veffer arrives in Amsterdam. She was the only one of her family to have survived the war. Her parents and sister Carla were murdered in Sobibor. There is no warm welcome and she is forced to spend her first night 'at home' in Amsterdam on a bench at the Apollolaan. In September 2017, the then 96-year-old Lotty was honored with her own monument, a bench on the spot where she spent that first night. It is just one of the many places that still remind us today of the persecution of the Jews.

Book excerpt: Winner of the National Jewish Book Award In 1921, photographer Alter Kacyzne was comissioned by the New York Yiddish daily, Forverts, to document images of Jewish life in the "old country." Kacyzne's assignment was to become a ten-year journey across "Poyln," as Poland's three million Yiddish-speaking Jews called their home, from the crowded ghettos of Warsaw and Krakow to the remote villages of Otwock and Kazimierz. Candid and intimate, tender and humorous, Kacyzne's portraits-- of teeming village squares and primitive workshops, cattle markets and spinning wheels, prayer groups and summer camps-- tell the story of a way of life that is no more. For the last sixty years, Kacyzne's Forverts photographs-- the sole fragment of his vast archive to survive World War II-- lay unseen. Now the work of this lost master is restored to the world in a volume of extraordinary force and beauty.
