Book excerpt: A study of the conflict over the natural water resources of geographic Palestine. The author focuses on both the scarcity and commonality of the water resources in order to demonstrate why water has become one of the most contentious issues between Israel and the Palestinians. He discusses how the principles of equitable utilization and joint management of common water resources can be achieved and can enhance the prospects for reducing conflict over water, and may ultimately contribute to overall Israeli-Palestinian cooperation. Includes several maps and charts which detail the area's water resources. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book The Palestinian Peasant Economy Under the Mandate

Download or read book The Palestinian Peasant Economy Under the Mandate written by Amos Nadan and published by Harvard CMES. This book was released on 2006 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the claim that Palestine's peasant economy progressed during the 1920s and 1930s, Amos Nadan skillfully integrates a wide variety of sources to demonstrate that the period was actually one of deterioration on both the macro (per capita) and micro levels. The economy would have most likely continued its downward spiral during the 1940s had it not been for the temporary prosperity that resulted from World War II. Nadan argues that this deterioration continued despite the British authorities' channeling of funds from the Jewish sector and the wealthier Arab sectors into projects for the Arab rural economy. The British were hoping that Palestine's peasants would not rebel if their economic conditions improved. These programs were, on the whole, defective because the British chose programs based on an assumption that the peasants were too ignorant to manage their farms wisely, instead of working with the peasants and their own institutions.

Book Mandated Landscape

Download or read book Mandated Landscape written by Roza El-Eini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking authoritative study, a highly documented and incisive analysis is made of the galvanising changes wrought to the people and landscape of British Mandated Palestine (1929-1948). Using a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, the book’s award-winning author examines how the British imposed their rule, dominated by the clashing dualities of their Mandate obligations towards the Arabs and the Jews, and their own interests. The rulers’ Empire-wide conceptions of the ‘White man’s burden’ and preconceptions of the Holy Land were potent forces of change, influencing their policies. Lucidly written, Mandated Landscape is also a rich source of information supported by numerous maps, tables and illustrations, and has 66 appendices, a considerable bibliography and extensive index. With a theoretical and historical backdrop, the ramifications of British rule are highlighted in their impact on town planning, agriculture, forestry, land, the partition plans and a case study, presenting discussions on such issues as development, ecological shock, law and the controversial division of village lands, as the British operated in a politically turbulent climate, often within their own administration. This book is a major contribution to research on British Palestine and will interest those in Middle East, history, geography, development and colonial/postcolonial studies.

Book Power and Water in the Middle East

Download or read book Power and Water in the Middle East written by Mark Zeitoun and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and Water in the Middle East' provides a powerful new perspective on the Palestinian-Israeli water conflict. Adopting a new approach to understanding water conflict - hydro-hegemony - the author shows the conflict to be much more deeply entrenched than previously thought and reveals how existing tactics to control water are leading away from peace and towards continued domination and a squandering of this vital resource.Existing approaches tend to play down the negative effects of non-violent water conflict, and what is presented as co-operation between countries often hides an underlying state of conflict between them. The new analytical framework of hydro-hegemony exposes the hidden dynamics of water conflict around the world and yields critical insights in to the Middle East water problem. This important work will interest researchers, professionals and policy makers involved with the politics of the Middle East and with water conflict more generally. 'a compelling story of state-building, inter-state competition, and the central role that water plays in state development' - Water Alternatives 'washes away another colourful colonial myth and reveals a history of squandered resources, domestic injustice, and regional belligerence... Zeitoun's meticulous investigation of the conflict over water in the region is a convincing read ... it remains essential reading for anybody working on resource management through government ministries, national agencies, and NGOs in the region.' - Arab Studies Journal
