Yet such remittances are perhaps the largest source of external finance in developing countries. Officially recorded remittance flows to developing countries exceeded US$125 billion in 2004, making them the second largest source of development finance after foreign direct investment. This book demonstrates that governments in developing countries increasingly recognize the importance of remittance flows and are quickly addressing these constraints.

The studies use household data from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and San Salvador, El Salvador. Important findings from household data compare the degree to which private care providers, public sector providers, and social security facilities are used. Also reviewed is the degree to which ineligible consumers exploit social security services. Policy recommendations for government officials discuss ways to deliver better health care to various economic groups.
