This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoranda on the Strength of Materials Used in Engineering Construction Many valuable accessions to our knowledge of the strength of materials have been made within a comparatively recent period; the records, however, have been scattered through different books, periodicals, &c. not always accessible or convenient for reference. We have therefore endeavored in this brief essay to bring together and arrange some of the more important elements, both old and new, so as to form an "aide memoire" for the Engineer and Architect, at the drawing office and elsewhere. The sources of information have been given as far as possible, in order that the results may be checked, and opportunities afforded for lengthened investigations, which are beyond the scope of these papers. Wherever it has been necessary to express the strength of any material in tons, we have modified the tables and formulas to admit the use of the American ton of 2,000 lbs. as promotive of simplicity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Materials of Construction: A Treatise for Engineers on the Strength of Engineering Materials The mechanical properties of the materials to be employed to accomplish the objects sought. Of these three coordinate departments of knowledge the first two are founded on the sciences of mathematics and applied mechanics. The last one, however, does not rest on any deductive science, as this information can only be gained by patient, expensive, and competent research. For this reason the third essential named above has not kept pace with the other two kinds of engineering science; but, on the other hand, it furnishes very much greater rewards to the skilled investigator. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Materials It is chiefly for the benefit of those users of materials of construction who are disposed to be their own engineers that this series of articles is written, but it is hoped that they will not on that account be without interest to members of the engineering profession. It is intended to present some facts and figures which will show that because a metal is called by the name iron it does not therefore necessarily possess a definite strength, but that its strength should first be determined by test; that published records of tests are not always to be relied upon; that many tests them selves are not reliable; and that in using any material in construction not only its strength but its other properties should be considered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A Manual for Students of Engineering The greater part' of the matter contained in the following pages is based on the notes of lectures given to the day and evening students at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology during the last five sessions. The book is intended for the use of those students of engineer ing who are desirous of obtaining a working knowledge of the fundamental principles involved in problems of machine and structural design. It should be found useful to candidates for the Third and Honours stages of the Examinations of the Board of Education, the examination for the admission of Associate Members to the Institution of Civil Engineers, as well as the examinations in the Engineering Schools of the Universities. It will be seen that special attention has been paid to the unequal distribution of stress, and to the limits of elasticity in iron and steel. Many of the examples quoted are taken from experimental results obtained by the writer or his students. It is also to be noted that the majority of the proofs given are similar to those used in most of the text-books. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the many writers of books and scientific papers to which he has referred in collecting these notes. W. O. P. Book The Strength of Materials

Download or read book The Strength of Materials written by Ewart S. Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Materials: A d104-Book for Engineers and Architects The subjects commonly called respectively the Strength of Materials and the Theory of Structures have much in common; much of the subject matter contained in the author's books upon the latter subject has, therefore, been incorporated, the same general method involving the use and application of graphical methods in preference to purely mathematical methods having been adopted in the other branches of the subject. An attempt has been made to present more clearly than is general the various theories as to the cause of failure in materials and the effect of these theories upon design. Although the author hopes that the book will be especially useful for students reading for the Assoc. M. Inst. 0. E., and University degree examinations in Engineering, he has attempted to present the subject in sufficiently practical form for it to be of greater assistance in practical design than is the case with an ordinary class book; with this in view many diagrams and tables have been incorporated for. Enabling the formulae to be applied with a minimum of time and trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Strength of Materials Classic Reprint

Download or read book Strength of Materials Classic Reprint written by Erik Oberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials It may be said, in a general way, that when designing machinery the designer must take into consideration two main factors. One is to so design the mechanism mechanically that the various motions required can be obtained by means of the machine. The other is to so proportion the parts that they will be strong enough to do the work for which they are intended Without breakage and, in most cases, without distortion. A third factor also enters prominently into the design, that Iof_so designing a machine that the various parts can be easily manufactured, but this last factor, while commercially fully as important as the other two, has not a direct bearing upon the actual working of the completed mechanism. The subject that will be dealt with in this Reference Book relates to the second of the two main questions affecting the design, that of proportioning the parts so that they will be strong enough to properly do the work for which they are intended. This problem, in turn, may be divided into two sections, one of which deals with the determining of the forces which act upon a machine part, tending to. Break or distort it, and the determination of the actual proportions necessary to resist these forces. The science of determining the forces acting upon a machine part or, in general, upon an engineering structure, is termed mechanics, this word being used in its more limited sense, often referred to as theoretical mechanics. The problem of actually determining the dimensions of details of machines or structures with regard to their strength is covered by that part of mechanical knowl edge which is known as the strength of materials. It should be under stood, however, that the question of determining the forces acting upon an engineering structure or machine and the determination of the actual dimensions and materials required to resist these forces, are so closely connected that in dealing with the strength of materials we must also deal, to a very large extent, with the mechanical theory of forces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A d104 Book for Technical, and Industrial Schools This text is the result Of over twelve years' experience In teaching the subject Of strength Of materials to the stu dents at Pratt Institute. An attempt has been made to present the fundamental and underlying principles with a minimum of mathematics. These principles are applied by the introduction Of a large number Of examples which are worked out in detail. It is only by the working of orig inal problems that the student is able to test his knowledge Of the subject. Many of the applications are made more particularly to mechanical lines of work, and yet the student who proposes 'to follow structural work will find the text Of great help to him. The text covers the application Of strength Of materials in the proportioning Of beams, columns, shafting, riveted joints, and in problems dealing with simple stresses. Chapter I has been made of an introductory nature, the desire being to present very briefly, but concisely, the simple laws Of equilibrium, so that the student may be able quickly and accurately to analyze the forces acting in any machine or machine part. A chapter is inserted dealing with the testing, and the production Of the more common materials of construction. It has been the experience of the author that only by the assigning Of original problems in class is the instructor able to test the grasp Of the subject the student is securing.
