Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorable Wars of Scotland The vicinity of such enterprising neighbours was particularly irksome to the Scottish kings, and they anxio'usly endeavoured to get possession of these islands. When treaty failed, they encouraged their subjects of Scotland to invade them and Alan, lord of Galloway, assisted by Thomas, earl of Athole, about thirty years before this, carried on a successful war against the isles, and expelled Olaf the Black, king of Man, from his dominions. These Scottish chiefs had collected a large fleet, with a proportion ably numerous army; and it required all the exer tions of the Norwegian king to re-establish his vassal on his island throne. After this, the authority of Norway became gradually more and more precarious throughout the isles. Some of the chiefs were com pelled, others induced by motives of interest, to te nounce their allegiance, and to embrace the nearer superiority of Scotland: some, who held lands of both crowns, were uncertain to whom they should pay their paramount allegiance; and Alexander the Second, the immediate predecessor of Alexander the Third, after an unsuccessful attempt at negotiation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of a Grandfather: History of Scotland On the whole, the idea of repelling force by force, and de fending themselves against the attacks of the soldiers, and others who assaulted them, when employed in divine worship, began to become more general among the harassed nonconform ists. For this purpose many of the congregation assembled in arms, and I received the following description of such a scene from a lady whose mother had repeatedly been present on such occasions. The meeting was held on the Eildon hills, in the bosom betwixt two of the three conical tops which form the crest of the mountain. Trusty sentinels were placed on advanced posts all around, so as to command a view of the country below, and give the earliest notice of the approach of any unfriendly party. The clergyman occupied an elevated temporary pulpit, with his back to the wind. There were few or no males of any quality or distinction, for such persons could not escape detection, and were liable to ruin from the consequences. But many women of good condition, and holding the rank of ladies, ventured to attend the forbidden meeting, and were allowed to sit in front of the assembly. Their side-saddles were placed on the ground to serve for seats, and their horses were tetiwred, or piqueted, as it is called, in the rear of the congregation. Before the females, and in the interval which divided them from the tent, or temporary pulpit, the arms of the men present, pikes, swords, and muskets, were regularly piled in such order as is used by soldiers, so that each man might in an instant assume his own weapons. When scenes of such a kind were repeatedly to be seen in different parts of the country, and while the Government relaxed none of that rigour which had thrown the nation into such a state, it was clear that a civil war could not be far distant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicle of the War Between the English and the Scots in 1173 and 1174 The metrical chronicle, which we publish here for the first time, has reference to the war which Henry II sustained against his eldest son, and chiefly against William the Lion, king of Scotland, in 1173 and 1174. Before we speak of the poem itself, of its author, and of the manuscripts wherein it is reserved, we beg'leave to say a few words concerning t e events which he has related, although there are many accounts of them in the general histories of England, and more especially in those of the reign of Henry II'. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fields of Fame in England and Scotland As the dramatic spectacles of war, and of the movements of marching men, are thrilling to the onlooker, so it is not strange that the narratives of wars and battles, which appeal powerfq to the imagination, have a stronger human interest than the records of the peaceful pursuits and achieve ments of statesmen or of the common people. His tory would be dull reading without the deeds of valour and the glory thereof. It will not, then, be thought an entirely whimsical design of the present writer if he attempts to present in collective form brief narratives of the chief battles of England and Scotland, with occasional references to his personal visits to these Fields of Fame. Download or read book The History of Scotland Vol 1 of 10 written by Patrick Fraser Tytler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 10: From the Accession of Alexander III. To the Union I have commenced the history or scotland at the accession of Alexander the Third, because it is at this period that our national annals become particularly interesting to the general reader. During the reign of this monarch, Eng land first began to entertain serious thoughts of the reduction of her sister country. The dark cloud of misfortune Which gathered over Scot land immediately after the death of Alexander, suggested to Edward the First his schemes of ambition and conquest and perhaps, in the history of Liberty, there is no more memorable War than that Which took its rise under Wallace in 1297, and terminated in the final establish ment of Scottish independence by Robert Bruce in 1328. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval and Military History of the Wars of England, Vol. 3: Including the Wars of Scotland and Ireland The king was required to attaint, and except from a general pardon, forty of the most considerable of his English subjects, and nineteen or his Scots, together with all the Popish recusants who had borne arms for him. It was insisted that forty-eight more, with all the members of either house who had fat in the parliament called by the king at Oxford, all lawyers and divines who had embraced the king's party, should be rendered incapable of any office, be forbid the exercise of their profession, be prohibited from coming within the verge of the court, and forfeit the third of their estates to the parliament. It was required, that whoever had borne arms for the king should forfeit the tenth of their estates, or, if that did not sussice, the sixth, for the payment of public debts. As if royal authority was not sufficiently annihilated by these terms, it was demanded that the court of wards should be abolished; that all the considerable officers of the crown, and all the judges, should be appointed by parliament; and that the right of peace and war should not he exercised without consent of parliament. A little before the commencement of this fruitless treaty, the parliament, to shew their determined resolution to proceed in the fame haughty imperious method in which they had begun, brought to the block Archbishop Laud, who had long been a prisoner in the tower, and was incapable of giving offence to any. While the king's affairs thus went to decay in England, they seemed to revive a little in Scotland, through the conduct and valour of the Earl of Montrose, a young nobleman newly returned from his travels. He had been introduced to the king; but, not meeting with an agreeable reception, had gone over to the covenanters, and been active in forwarding all their violence.
