Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 1 Another mistake frequently made, and a very serious one, is in assuming that nearly all exotic forms can be forced into the genera of purely European species. Some genera are common to Europe and America, but the isolation of the latter region since the middle Tertiary has sufficed for the evolution of many distinct types, so that at present there are a great many more endemic American genera than of those common to the two continents. The same remark applies as well to the species, the least resemblance between species of the two continents sufficing some superficial observers for a verdict of identity, which is false as a rule. There are some species common to America and Europe but not many, and they constitute an exceedingly small proportion of the whole number known; moreover virtually all such are likely to be cosmopolitan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 8: 1918 In almost every considerable collection of the Insecta, there are usually many unworked sections consisting principally of uniden tified material. This is especially true of those accumulated by students not having with them assistants to perform the more mechanical work relating to mounting and cleaning specimens and restoring such as may deteriorate through unfavorable conditions in the lapse of time. Among the unstudied sections of the writer's collection, none have been more discomforting than those com prising some subfamilies of the Carabidae, and the material at hand, though very extensive, has been thus far only partially identified and so comparatively useless. It was therefore with the idea of bringing some order out of chaos that the revisions of the present volume were drawn up, not however without many misgivings as to the attitude to be assumed by those having different conceptions regarding what should or should not be called species. These dif ferences of view will continue, however, so long as our knowledge remains imperfect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 4: 1913 Our Cicindelidae have been considered more or less seriously by a number of authors recently, but the Carabidae have been singu larly neglected - even those genera composed of conspicuous species. No good tabular key to the species of Cambus or Calosoma, as represented in our fauna, has ever been published, and there is no evidence to show that the material in most of our rather numerous collections has been so much as carefully observed or accurately segregated into specific forms. No new Nebm'a has been brought to notice for nearly a generation and the same statement can be made regarding numerous other important genera. All this points only too clearly to the paucity of workers and the vast field that there is to cover. The active describers and classifiers of our Coleoptera as a life specialty, from Thomas Say to the present time, could be counted on the fingers of both hands, with some to spare. It is very remarkable that a subject so fascinating, so broadening to the mind and withal so accessible to everyone, should be so disregarded, ignored or even ridiculed by the vast majority of educated mankind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 7: 1916 One source of confusion is that the word variation is generally misunderstood and the differences due to environment so attributed. These latter divergencies do not by any means indicate variation in the proper meaning of that word, but the beginnings of separate species, at first as slightly different taxonomic forms and finally as true species. Such forms unless very distinct, as in the case of many Omus and Brennas modifications, can be designated as sub species for convenience, when it is thought advisable to record them by name; it is not necessary to invent lesser categories in the present lack of full knowledge of the subject. The estimation of actual taxonomic weight of these related forms is of course a matter of individual judgment. In some of the cases above mentioned the specific status should be self-evident and other cases may be decided provisionally, with more or less precision, by any one accustomed to view the processes of nature, in any field, with moderate intelli gence and discrimination. Download or read book Memoirs on the Coleoptera Vol 9 written by Thomas Lincoln Casey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 9: 1920 In defining the genera of Platyninae, a great deal of consideration must be given habital differences and peculiarities, as in the Ptero stichinae, for radical divergencies in the structure of special organs and parts of the body are comparatively rare, while the habital differences are so constant throughout large groups of species, as to indicate beyond doubt that this is the natural method to pursue in defining genera. The numerous species of A gonum, for instance, hold together remarkably well in habitus and, as a whole, present a very different appearance from Anchomenus, so that to unite the two would be quite repellant from the standpoint of what is known as the sense of proportion. So also the various species of Euro philus, which in this case are distinguished, besides habitus, by a well marked special antennal structural character, form a very consistent whole, differing greatly from Anchomenus and showing that they form a truly valid genus. The Platyninae form an extensive and important element in the Carabid fauna of the northern hemisphere, but are very much more developed in North America than in Europe. The genus Platynus Bon., itself, I hold to be exclusively European, our Wingless species constituting three or more allied genera, of which Rhadme Lec., stands widely apart in general appearance from any other type of the subfamily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 6: 1915 The primary divisions of the Scarabaeidae are not rigorously definable and, in fact, after so long a period of geologic evolution, it would be illogical to imagine any other condition than an inter blending of structural characters to such a degree as to render delimitation of extended groups, in other than a general way, more or less unsatisfactory. There is scarcely a structural feature defining one group that may not appear in some other group. This is in a measure true also of the more restricted subdivisions, such as genera, except when monotypic. The discussion of these points is made by Lacordaire so fully and so well, that it is not necessary to go into the subject at the present time and in a work designed more especially to differentiate and define the species of a restricted fauna. Col., I have carefully arranged all the Aleocharinae in my col lection and find many undescribed forms; these are defined in the present paper. The material in my collection has been obtained from many sources. That most expert of collectors Herbert H. Smith, contributed a very large set of admirably perfect specimens in all parts of the series, from the Catskill Mountains, and Prof. H. F. Wickham and Rev. J. H. Keen have also sent me very full sets, the former from various parts of the Rocky Mountain system and Iowa, the latter from Metlakatla and Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. In addition, Mr. H. C. Fall many years ago, gave numerous well mounted examples from southern California, and others were sent me by Emil Brendel from Iowa. Norman Criddle from Manitoba, C. F. Baker from California and Chas. Dury from Cincinnati; these were augmented by occasional species from numerous other collectors forming a goodly number in the aggregate. Finally, I have myself collected them with assiduity during the past quarter century in California, Texas and parts adjacent, St. Louis, Vicksburg, maritime Virginia, in Rhode Island and elsewhere, so that the material at hand can well be imagined to be tolerably full. The present paper completes the description of virtually all the species known to me from these sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The official duties of the author have since left him but little time for scientific research; but believing that the catalogue, even in its present incomplete condition, will be of service to students, he has considered it proper not to retard its appearance any longer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Coleoptera, Vol. 1: Or Beetles of Great Britain and Ireland Anyone commencing the study of British Beetles (and especially the isolated student) cannot fail to have experienced a great difficulty in ascertaining the names of the specimens he has collected. Stephens' "Manual of British Coleoptera," the last work professing to give descriptions of all the British species, was published in 1839, and for descriptions of the very numerous species found since that time to inhabit these islands, it is necessary to consult scattered notices (in many cases very difficult to obtain), the result being that the beginner is compelled to allow his specimens to lie aside unnamed until he can meet with a more advanced student. I--new species of the staphylinid tribe myrmedoniini. The Myrmedoniini comprise by far the greater part of the large subfamily Aleocharinae, and present a rather discouraging problem to the systematist through sheer force of numbers. In the European fauna probably a very large proportion of the existing species have been described, though in an inconveniently scattered literature, so that it is difficult to identify many of the forms, especially as the types are widely diffused and in some instances probably lost. In the most recent European catalogue the greater part of those described are announced as synonyms of a few more accentuated species, possibly to thereby cut the Gordian knot of uncertainty of identification as much as anything, for many of these so-called synonyms are not truly such by any means. I do not think that the names printed in that catalogue under Acrotona fungi, for example, are synonyms in many instances, for I have received under this name from various European authorities at least four unequivocally distinct though generically related species. Some describers have not taken pains to study their material with the care exercised by such investigators as Thomson, Kraatz and Rey, whose genera are nearly all valid as such, and the absence of information concerning the intermesocoxal sternal pieces and other important structural characters, renders it impossible to identify, with very few exceptions, the species published by Maklin, Mannerheim, Melsheimer, Say, Erichson and many of those of Bernhauer, more particularly when founded upon short comparative statements concerning certain European species, positively authentic examples of which it is almost impossible for American students to obtain. As a result, even when...
