It is a curious factfl6 that Dr. Clayton was only the adopted father of the Essay on Spirit. It was, in truth, written by a young clergyman in his diocese, who dared not to give it to the world except under the sanction of the Bishop's dedica tion and the indirect protection afforded by its passing through the hands of Dr. Clayton to the press; it was, however, never distinctly acknow ledged by the Bishop, but was always considered as his work.
