Lowrie, Missionary to China This edition of the Memoir of the Rev. Walter M. Lowrie is made up of a selection from the letters and journals printed in the larger editions of the same work. Excerpt: ...England, abundantly; and now, when the means of information are so accessible, why should you not avail yourselves of them? Study the Bible with reference to this point. Why is it that some men at Monthly Concerts read only the seventysecond Psalm, and the sixtieth chapter of Isaiah? They really seem to think that there are no other parts of the Bible that speak of missions. Having learned these things--and you see from this hasty outline that there is not a little to be learned, and that you can best commence learning it while in the seminary--the next thing will be to teach. This will be your duty in the public services of the sanctuary, in the Monthly Concert, in friendly visits among your people, and, above all, in the Sabbathschool. Let it be a special object with you to interest the young, and you will certainly succeed. But I have written till my hand is wearied, and perhaps have wearied your patience. What I have written, however, though hastily penned, has not been hastily gathered. I trust it will not be hastily passed over by you. I shall be most happy to hear irom you as soon as you wish to write, and shall prefer that you ask me questions, which I shall answer as I can. I have some questions to ask you in return, to which I shall be glad to receive answers. What is the order and nature of your exercises in the Society of Inquiry, and the Monthly Concert? Do your students make it a point of conscience to inquire into their own personal duty to the heathen? And is this done in the early part of your theological course? Do your students generally read the missionary publications, particularly the Chronicle and Herald? I don't mean, do you take them? for I have known many students to take, who scarcely ever read them. Is your...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. Wm; C. Burns, M.A: Missionary to China From the English Presbyterian Church The materials from which the narrative has been drawn are - Ist, My own personal recollections and those of other intimate friends; 2d, Private letters addressed chiefly to members of his own family; and 3d, Copious journals, extending over the whole period of his home ministry, and continued, though in a briefer and more fragmentary manner, during the early years of his. Residence in China. From these last I have quoted very largely, but not more so I believe than those who are really interested in his work would wish me to have done. Indeed, the difficulty often was merely to extract from a document, which many readers doubtless would have wished to possess entire. Book Opening China

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western evangelists have long been fascinated by China, a vast mission field with a unique language and culture. One of the most intrigued was also one of the most intriguing: Karl F. A. Gützlaff (1803-1851). In this erudite study Jessie Gregory Lutz chronicles Gützlaff's life from his youth in Germany to his conversion and subsequent turn to missions to his turbulent time in Asia. Lutz also includes a substantial bibliography consisting of (1) archival sources, (2) selected books, pamphlets, tracts, and translations by Gützlaff, and (3) books, periodicals, and articles. This is truly an important reference for any student of the history of China or missions.

Book Memoir of the Rev David Abeel D D

Download or read book Memoir of the Rev David Abeel D D written by David Abeel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. David Abeel, D.D: Late Missionary to China The following Memoir, now presented to the Christian public, has been prepared at the suggestion of friends, who believed that the interests of vital godliness and of the cause of Missions called for its publication. It is compiled from the Journal, Diary, and Correspondence of Mr. Abeel. The part of the Compiler has consisted, chiefly, in arranging and connecting these materials, and thus the work appears partly in the character of an autobiography. It has necessarily assumed this shape, as the distance of Mr. Abeel's field of labor has precluded any knowledge of the events which occurred during the greater part of his life, farther than they are recorded by himself. It has been found difficult to give to this work that peculiar interest which has been thrown around many Biographies.
