Excerpt: ...of this wretched world, will call reason to your relief, with thankfulness that God the Creator of us all hath called this His virtuous and zealous creature to the participation of His heavenly inheritance. We should lack of duty towards our Redeemer in resisting His will, and show a kind of envy in lamenting his most glorious exchange out of a frail and sinful life to an everlasting mansion and Heaven of joys. My good Lord, cast off this Woe; let it not touch your heart, in which the wisdom of this world and state hath found her seat for many years, to God's glory, the Realm's safety, and your mortal renown. Her Majesty sendeth your good noble friend, Mr. Minors, to you, who will more largely impart her pleasure unto you; and so, with my humble prayers to God for your long life and comfortable being, I most humbly take my leave. In haste, this 8th day of November l582. Your good Lordship's most bound poor friend, Cun. I-IATTON.b LORD BURGHLEY TO SIR CHRISTOPHER HATTON Goon MR.VICE-CHAMBERLAIN, I have great cause to thank you for your letter, full of good counsel and godly advice, " Additional MSS. 15891. " Autograph in the Lansdowne MS. 36, art. 7. which God give me grace to follow, knowing it necessary for me to obey His will in all things; but yet a hard lesson for flesh to learn, and herein my case differeth from all others. For though I know I ought to thank you, yet, contrarywise to all other causes that require thanks, which are given with joy from the heart, in this I cannot but sprinkle my thanks with tears and sobbings; and yet from my heart. I will not defend my passions, but beseech God to be my comfort, as in some part I feel thereof, by the comfortable messages sent to me and mine by His...

Book Genesis of the Shakespearean Works

Download or read book Genesis of the Shakespearean Works written by Peter D Matthews and published by Bassano Publishing House. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of fourteen years research scrutinizing thousands of historical documents. Dr Matthews reveals never before seen facts regarding the earliest quartos and the first folio – even new research into the leather cover of the Bodleian first folio and how that particular copy came into the possession of the Turbutt family. Dr Matthews has forensically dated the majority of the Shakespearean plays twenty years before earlier scholars, such as Rowe, Malone and Chambers – some plays dated as early as 1561, 1559 and 1558 – up to six years before William Shakespeare was born. Dr Matthews’ exemplary philosophical dissertation of the Shakespearean works and its critics, reveals much about the identity of the real authors. A unique reference work essential to Shakespearean scholars and students alike – this crucial work redates the Shakespearean works, scrutinizes each candidate, and definitively answers the authorship debate.

Book Love Lust and License in Early Modern England

Download or read book Love Lust and License in Early Modern England written by Johanna Rickman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on cases of extramarital sex, Johanna Rickman investigates fornication, adultery and bastard bearing among the English nobility during the Elizabethan and early Stuart period. Since members of the nobility were not generally brought before the ecclesiastical courts, which had jurisdiction over other citizens' sexual offences, Rickman's sources include collections of family papers (primarily letters), state papers, and literary texts (prescriptive manuals, love sonnets, satirical verse, and prose romances), as well as legal documents. Rickman explores how attitudes towards illicit sex varied greatly throughout the period of study, roughly 1560 - 1630. Whole some viewed it as a minor infraction, others, directed by a religious moral code, viewed it as a serious sin. seeks to illuminate the place of noblewomenin early modern aristocratic culture, both as historical subjects (considering personal circumstances) and as a social group (considering social position and status). She argues that two different gender ideals were in operation simultaneously: one primarily religious ideal, which lauded female silence, obedience, and chastity, and another, more secular ideal, which required noblewomen to be beautiful, witty, brave, and receptive to the games of courtly love.
