Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Scientific Researches of John Dalton It seems necessary to explain in few words the circumstances which induced me to undertake the difficult task of becoming Dalton's biographer, and which have so long delayed its accomplishment. Dr. Dalton, in the first clause of his will, bequeathed to me and to his three executors "all his philosophical, scientific, and literary manuscripts and correspondence, to be disposed of as they may judge most fit;" and in a codicil to the same, he bequeathed to me all his chemical and other philosophical instruments and apparatus. I received intelligence of these bequests in August 1844, at Paris, on my way to Italy, where I remained till the following autumn. Regarding them as significant of my venerable friend's intention that I should act as his literary executor, and should write some account of his life and discoveries, I commenced shortly after my return to prepare for the task, by the careful re-perusal and analysis of all his published works. During the disputes as to Dalton's priority of discovery, it was frequently asserted that his atomic laws were not new, and they were, as is usual in such cases, attributed to various persons. Of these persons, Higgins, in this country, and Richter, in Germany, have been the most prominent. I have endeavoured to show exactly the position of Higgins; I shall do the same with Richter. Higgins came first with clearness and simplicity, uttering a beautiful idea which he failed to follow up; Richter came close after him, with great labour and enthusiasm, filled with a great idea of the study in which he was engaged, and obtained a law which he failed to follow up; he lost himself in complicated theories, having no idea how simple was the truth he sought for. Both were neglected, as happens when men fail to give completeness to their inquiries, even in the eyes of those who study and are willing to learn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Charles Henry Dalton Charles Henry Dalton was born at Chelmsford, Massachusetts, September 25, 1826, the third of eight children of John Call Dalton and Julia Ann Spalding. On both sides he was descended from families whose history is intimately connected with the early growth and development of New England. His great-grandfather, James Dalton, who was born in 1718, was the first of his family to settle in Boston. Whether or not he was descended from the Daltons who emigrated to this country in 1635, and whose principal home in the seventeenth century was at Hampton, New Hampshire, I have been unable to discover: the probabilities on the whole seem to point in this direction. From his early youth James Dalton was engaged in seafaring pursuits. In 1740 he was commander of the brigantine "Joshua," trading from Boston to London, and later became the owner of various vessels, voyaging along the coast to the Carolinas, West Indies, and sometimes to Europe. In 1756 he purchased an estate in Boston on the south side of Water Street, which contained a tanyard, garden, dwelling-house, and other buildings. These he pulled down and in 1758 built upon the property a Mansion House which was occupied by himself and family during the remainder of his life and afterwards by his son, Peter Roe Dalton.
